Top Maple Leafs News

  • Maple Leafs' Ty Voit: Sent to AHL

Voit (undisclosed) was loaned to AHL Toronto on Monday.

Voit's demotion to the minors suggests the injury he suffered during the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in September won't be a problem. The 20-year-old forward racked up 24 goals and 105 points in 67 contests with OHL Sarnia last season.

  • Maple Leafs' Braeden Kressler: Moved to minors

Kressler (undisclosed) was assigned to AHL Toronto on Monday.

Kressler was injured during the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in September. He will work on his recovery at training camp with the Marlies. Kressler amassed 25 goals and 52 points in 47 games with OHL Flint last season.

  • Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Close to being available

Jarnkrok (neck) hopes to play in at least one of Toronto's final two preseason games, Mark Masters of TSN reports.

Jarnkrok said Monday that he suffered a neck injury early at training camp, but he feels much better now. The 32-year-old forward notched 20 goals and 39 points in 73 games last season. He is slated to occupy a middle-six role with the Maple Leafs this campaign.

  • Maple Leafs' Conor Timmins: Week-to-week

Timmins (lower body) is considered week-to-week, per Chris Johnston of TSN.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe said Monday that Timmins has a "significant" lower-body injury. The 25-year-old Timmins had two goals, 12 assists and 23 hits in 25 appearances with Toronto last season. He might begin the 2023-24 campaign on the injured reserve list.

  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies: Adds penalty killing to arsenal

Knies scored a shorthanded goal in a preseason contest against Montreal on Friday.

Knies showed off a dimension in his game that perhaps wasn't showcased before. His hustle on the penalty kill was outstanding, and he could have had a couple more goals there if the puck had bounced the right way. Knies continues to show why he deserves a top-six gig. He's smart and poised on both sides of the puck, has a great motor and uses his body to hold off opponents while protecting the puck.

  • Maple Leafs' Conor Timmins: Suffers lower-body injury

Timmins suffered a lower-body injury Friday night in Montreal and will undergo an MRI on Saturday, Terry Koshan of The Toronto Sun reports.

Timmins was having an outstanding training camp, as he had two goals and four assists in his first two preseason games and was a plus-2 in Friday's 2-1 win. The injury occurred late in the third period. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

  • Maple Leafs' Simon Benoit: Set for preseason action

Benoit (back) is expected to play in Saturday's preseason matchup against Montreal, according to Nick Barden of The Hockey News.

Benoit is poised to make his Toronto preseason debut after being limited to start training camp because of back spasms. He registered 10 points, 128 blocked shots and 216 hits in 78 games for Anaheim last season.

  • Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Practicing Saturday

Nylander (illness) returned to practice Saturday, Terry Koshan of The Toronto Sun reports.

Nylander missed practice Friday with flu-like symptoms. Nylander is expected to play center this season while remaining on the first power-play unit. He had 40 goals and 47 assists in 82 games while playing primarily as a winger last season, both career highs. This is the final year of a six-year contract Nylander signed in December of 2018.

  • Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Back at practice

Jarnkrok (undisclosed) took part in practice Saturday, per NHL.com's Dave McCarthy.

In his return to the ice, Jarnkrok skated alongside William Nylander (illness) and Max Domi. While the 32-year-old Jarnkrok won't play in Toronto's preseason matchup with the Canadiens on Saturday, he could be ready to go by Opening Night. He is projected to occupy a middle-six role in 2023-24.

  • Maple Leafs' Joseph Woll: Out of action Saturday

Woll will miss Saturday's tilt in Montreal with flu-like symptoms, according to Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun.

Woll is expected to be the No. 2 goaltender with the Maple Leafs this season, behind Ilya Samsonov. He was strong last season in limited action, going 6-1-0 with a 2.16 GAA and .932 save percentage at the NHL level. Look for Woll to get into 25-30 games this season for a strong Maple Leafs team.

  • Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Has flu-like symptoms

Nylander missed practice Friday with flu-like symptoms, according to Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun.

Nylander will not play in Montreal on Friday. The talented forward had a career-year in 2022-23, scoring 40 goals and adding 47 assists while playing in all 82 games for the second time in his career. This is a contract year for the 27-year-old, so expect Nylander to have another outstanding offensive season. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

  • Maple Leafs' John Klingberg: Not practicing Friday

Klingberg (upper body) is not at practice Friday, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports.

Klingberg suffered the injury in Wednesday's preseason contest versus the Sabres. The 31-year-old is expected to quarterback the first power-play unit and should be expected to get 45-50 points this season, if he remains healthy. Consider Klingberg day-to-day.

  • Maple Leafs' Conor Timmins: Shows off skill in bid for role

Timmins scored two goals and added two assists in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Sabres in the Kraft Hockeyville game in St. Thomas, Ontario.

The town of West Lorne, Ontario earned the title, but the ice surface in their arena is below NHL standards and there are only a few seats, so they moved it to a nearby city. Timmins showed off his strong offensive abilities, which have never been in doubt. He's competing for the seventh-man role because of his glaring defensive issues. Still, spot starting Timmins when he's given the opportunity to showcase his skill can help fantasy managers if they pluck him from the wire.

  • Maple Leafs' John Klingberg: Exits Wednesday's game

Klingberg left Wednesday's preseason game versus the Sabres after something tightened up during the first period, David Alter of Sports Illustrated reports.

Klingberg's exit sounds precautionary for now, though the 31-year-old defenseman will be evaluated further Thursday. Klingberg is expected to be the Maple Leafs' quarterback on the first power-play unit as well as a top-four option this season. Given his importance to the team's offense, it's understandable that the Leafs will be cautious with him during the preseason slate.

  • Maple Leafs' Dylan Gambrell: Diagnosed with concussion

Gambrell "won't be available for a while" due to a concussion, Terry Koshan of The Toronto Sun reports.

It sounds like Gambrell could be in danger of missing Toronto's regular-season opener Oct. 11 versus Montreal. The 27-year-old forward picked up just 10 points through 60 games with Ottawa last season, so there's little reason for fantasy managers to monitor his status.

  • Maple Leafs' Noah Gregor: Inside line on fourth-line gig

Gregor, who is on a professional tryout contract, has impressed at Leafs camp and could break camp on the team's fourth line, reports The Athletic.

Gregor is a speedy energy fourth-line player who impressed Monday alongside David Kampf and Ryan Reaves. He set up a power-play goal and hopped the boards with Kampf on PK1. Gregor's speed is his best attribute, and with it, he springs pucks and might bury 8-10 goals, even in limited ice. He has the inside line on the fourth-line gig because he's a winger -- it's the only spot open with Kampf sliding down to the fourth line because William Nylander is skating at center. That inside line doesn't make him fantasy worthy, but Gregor is a good story nonetheless.

  • Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Considered day-to-day

Jarnkrok (undisclosed) is considered day-to-day after skipping Tuesday's practice for maintenance, per Joshua Kloke of The Athletic.

Jarnkrok's injury is not believed to be serious, which indicates he could be available for Opening Night even if he sits out the remainder of the preseason schedule. The 32-year-old forward produced 20 goals and 39 points in 73 games last season.

  • Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Good start at center

Nylander had five shots on goal, eight attempts, was around the puck all game and had some chemistry with linemate Max Domi in Sunday's first exhibition game.

He started off slowly at the dot, but finished at 50 percent, winning 11-of-22 draws, and he nearly tied up the game in the final 20 seconds on a feed from Domi. Nylander could move up to the second line if he flourishes down the middle, ultimately bumping John Tavares to line three or the wing. We're a long way from that, but it's not an unreasonable possibility, and that could push him up even higher on draft boards.

  • Maple Leafs' Mark Giordano: Motivated to show he's still got it

Giordano is using his poor finish to 2022-23 as motivation heading into this season, reports The Athletic. His ice time dropped from 19 minutes per game during the regular season last year to eight-to-nine minutes by the end of the postseason.

Skating 19 minutes per night is tough for a lot of players, let alone one who will soon be 40 and the oldest player in the NHL. Giordano has recognized that he needs to better rest and recover between games, and "maybe pay attention a bit more to the science with our guys... I think the game's changing so you have to (too)." He's referring to the Leafs' sport science team and the analytics they produce. Giordano's fantasy value is behind him, but he can help his team make a run in the playoffs. That is, if he can prove that last postseason was an outlier.

  • Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews: Penalty kill time on horizon

Matthews will see more regular time on the penalty kill this season, reports The Athletic.

Matthews has seen a total of only about 24 minutes on the PK in nearly 500 NHL games, but that's about to change. Matthews is one of the NHL's best 5v5 players and always among the league leaders in takeaways. So, the threat of a steal -- and of Matthews taking off shorthanded with a lot of open ice -- will certainly put extra pressure on opposing PPs. Matthews won't be one of the Leafs' top options on the PK -- those minutes belong to Mitchell Marner, David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok, with Sam Lafferty getting some, too. The only negative? Playing on the PK will likely lead to a slight drop in 5v5 time. That's less than ideal for one of the NHL's best 5v5 players, and for fantasy managers needing that even-strength production, but it won't be enough to affect his draft spot or overall fantasy worth.
