Semyon Varlamov NYI G
Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Facing Rangers
11m agoVarlamov will be between the home pipes against the Rangers on Friday, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.
Coach Patrick Roy said the plan was for Varlamov to play the whole game Friday. The netminder could be in line to start Opening Night at home versus Utah on Oct. 10 as Ilya Sorokin (back) has not seen any preseason action. Varlamov was 14-8-4 with a 2.60 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 28 regular-season contests in 2023-24.

Jake McCabe TOR D
Maple Leafs' Jake McCabe: Considered day-to-day
18m agoMcCabe won't skate during Friday's practice session due to an upper-body injury, and he's considered day-to-day.
While the exact nature of McCabe's injury isn't clear, it's discouraging to see him held out of practice ahead of Saturday's preseason finale against the Red Wings. It's not yet clear whether he'll suit up against Detroit, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him held out to avoid risking his health ahead of Opening Night against Montreal on Wednesday.
-
Calle Jarnkrok TOR C
Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Still hampered by injury
19m agoJarnkrok was held out of practice Friday due to a lower-body injury.
Jarnkrok has been in and out of the lineup during preseason due to a lingering upper-body injury. The 33-year-old center should probably be considered questionable ahead of Saturday's preseason finale versus the Red Wings, and more likely will be given the time to get healthy ahead of Opening Night versus the Canadiens on Wednesday.
-
Joel Blomqvist PIT G
Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Starting Friday
22m agoBlomqvist will patrol the home crease versus Columbus on Friday, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.
Blomqvist will play the entire game according to coach Mike Sullivan. Blomqvist has yet to make his NHL debut after he was selected in the second round -- 52nd overall -- in 2020. The 22-year-old netminder was 25-12-6 with a 2.16 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 45 regular-season appearances for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2023-24. Look for Blomqvist to be the first goaltender recalled, if either Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic suffers an injury.
-
Bryan Rust PIT RW
Penguins' Bryan Rust: Won't play Friday
24m agoRust won't play in Friday's preseason finale against the Blue Jackets due to a lower-body injury, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.
Rust missed a third consecutive day of practice Friday, and coach Mike Sullivan revealed that the winger is dealing with a lower-body injury and is considered day-to-day. While he'll be absent from Friday's exhibition finale, it's not yet clear whether he'll be available for Opening Night against the Rangers on Wednesday. Anthony Beauvillier and Drew O'Connor will likely play alongside Sidney Crosby on the Penguins' top line if Rust is sidelined.
-
Drew Doughty LA D
Kings' Drew Doughty: Undergoes surgery
31m agoDoughty, as previously announced, had surgery to repair his fractured ankle and is considered month-to-month, Zach Dooley of the Kings' official site reports Friday.
Doughty's status remains unchanged but he at least has now had his procedure and should be on the road to recovery. At this point, it wouldn't be surprising to see Doughty out of action until the calendar turns to 2025, though the team hasn't provided a specific recovery timeline. Without Doughty on the blue line, Brandt Clarke should see increased minutes in addition to getting power-play opportunities. Doughty figures to be designated for long-term injured reserve once the season opens.

Maple Leafs' Calle Jarnkrok: Still hampered by injury
19m agoJarnkrok was held out of practice Friday due to a lower-body injury.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan WPG C
Jets' Jaret Anderson-Dolan: Unavailable Friday
32m agoAnderson-Dolan (undisclosed) will not dress Friday in Calgary, according to Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press.
Anderson-Dolan was injured blocking a shot Wednesday against the Flames. He is battling for a spot on the bottom-two lines and the injury could hinder his chances of starting on Opening Night in Edmonton on Oct. 9. Anderson-Dolan had a goal, three assists, 53 hits and 21 blocked shots in 30 regular-season appearances for LA in 2023-24 before he was claimed off waivers by Nashville in March of 2024, He played one game for the Predators and was held off the scoresheet.
-
David Gustafsson WPG C
Jets' David Gustafsson: Not playing Friday
38m agoGustafsson (lower body) is unavailable for Friday's tilt in Calgary, Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Gustafsson was injured at the midway mark of the second period Wednesday versus Calgary. The 24-year-old played in 39 regular-season games with the Jets in 2023-24, scoring three goals and adding four assists. Gustafsson is in a battle for a spot on the fourth line. His status for Opening Night in Edmonton on Oct. 9 is in doubt at this time.

Luke Glendening TB C
Lightning's Luke Glendening: Practicing in non-contact jersey
1h agoGlendening (undisclosed) is at practice Friday in a non-contact jersey, according to Gabby Shirley of Bally Sports Florida.
Glendening has not been healthy since the start of training camp, but he is finally back on the ice. Glendening had 10 goals and one assist, along with 39 PIM, 121 hits and 53 blocked shots in 81 regular-season appearances last season. He is expected to center the fourth line once he is healthy enough to return.
-
Mikey Eyssimont TB C
Lightning's Michael Eyssimont: Could be ahead of schedule
1h agoEyssimont (lower body) is wearing a regular jersey at practice Friday, Gabby Shirley of Bally Sports Florida reports.
Eyssimont has been dealing with the injury since the start of training camp, and it was assumed that he would not be ready for Opening Night on Oct. 11 versus Carolina. With the start of the season still a week away, Eyssimont looks to be on track to start the season in the lineup, barring any setbacks. Eyssimont is expected to play on the third line, alongside Nick Paul and Conor Sheary, as well as seeing second power-play action.
-
Maxwell Willman NJ C
Devils' Max Willman: Heading to AHL
2h agoWillman was waived by the Devils on Friday with the intent to loan him to AHL Utica.
Willman made 18 regular-season appearances for New Jersey last year and tallied three goals and an assist while averaging 8:20 of ice time. The 29-year-old is with the Devils on a two-way deal and will likely split time between the AHL and NHL this season.
-
Bryan Rust PIT RW
-
Bryan Rust PIT RW
Penguins' Bryan Rust: Missing again Friday
1h agoRust, who was originally absent due to maintenance, was not on the ice for Friday's game-day skate, Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
The fact that Rust has now missed three days for maintenance reasons is now becoming a concern for fantasy managers. At this point, the winger shouldn't be expected to suit up in the preseason finale against the Blue Jackets on Friday and is likely questionable heading into Opening Night versus the Rangers on Wednesday. If Rust does miss out, Anthony Beauvillier and Drew O'Connor figure to flank Sidney Crosby on the top line.
-
Samuel Laberge NJ LW
Devils' Samuel Laberge: Hits waiver wire
2h agoThe Devils placed Laberge on waivers Friday.
Laberge made his NHL debut in 2023-24, playing a pair of games just after Thanksgiving, before returning to the AHL to complete the season. He wasn't effective at the NHL level, but he generated six goals, 13 assists and 92 PIM in 59 regular-season appearances with AHL Utica.
-
Mike Hardman NJ LW
Devils' Mike Hardman: Put on waivers
2h agoHardman was placed on waivers Friday.
Hardman inked a two-year, two-way contract with the Devils in the offseason after registering 22 goals and 15 assists in 63 regular-season appearances for AHL Rockford last season. Hardman will be sent to AHL Utica if he passes through waivers.
-
Nathan Legare NJ RW
Devils' Nathan Legare: Waived by New Jersey
2h agoLegare was waived by the Devils on Friday with the intention to loan him to AHL Utica.
Legare signed a two-way deal with the Devils in early May but was unable to make the team's Opening Night roster. He'll likely be forced to spend most, if not all, of the 2024-25 campaign in the minors.
-
John Leonard UTA LW
Panthers' John Leonard: Released from PTO Friday
2h agoLeonard was released from his PTO by the Panthers on Friday and sent to AHL Charlotte.
Leonard saw action in only one preseason game and was -2 with nary a point. He played six NHL regular-season games last season with Arizona, managing one goal. The 26-year-old spent most of the 2023-24 campaign with AHL Tucson, picking up 12 goals and 20 assists in 63 regular-season appearances.

-
Ryan Johnson BUF D
Sabres' Ryan Johnson: Heading to AHL
1h agoJohnson (lower body) was loaned to AHL Rochester on Friday.
Johnson was held out of Monday's preseason finale against Detroit, but he was considered day-to-day and will head to the minors now that he's healthy. He made 41 regular-season appearances for Buffalo last year, recording seven assists and 35 shots on goal while averaging 13:52 of ice time.
-
Erik Karlsson PIT D
Penguins' Erik Karlsson: Joining teammates at practice
2h agoKarlsson (upper body) took the ice in a regular sweater with the main group Friday, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.
Karlsson is unlikely to jump right back into action against the Jackets on Friday in the Penguins' preseason finale. Instead, the blueliner looks on track to be ready to suit up for Opening Night versus the Rangers. Still, it's good news for the Swede, who has thus far missed the entirety of training camp due to his upper-body issue. Once given the all-clear, Karlsson figures to eat a ton of minutes on Pittsburgh's blue line and should step into a spot on the No. 1 power-play unit -- though Kris Letang will likely also be in contention for that role.
-
Stanislav Svozil CLB D
Blue Jackets' Stanislav Svozil: Joining NHL club
2h agoSvozil was promoted from AHL Cleveland on Friday.
Svozil logged two NHL games for the Jackets last year in which he tallied one assist, three shots and one hit while averaging 20:07 of ice time. The 21-year-old blueliner has shown an offensive touch in the minors, racking up 23 points in 57 regular-season games last year, but he will need to bring it with him to the NHL level.
-
Cole Clayton CLB D
Blue Jackets' Cole Clayton: Elevated from minors
3h agoClayton was recalled from AHL Cleveland on Friday.
Clayton has yet to make his NHL debut and will be hard-pressed to break into the 23-man roster for Opening Night versus Minnesota on Thursday. Look for Clayton to be sent back down to the minors following Friday's preseason matchup with the Penguins.
-

Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Facing Rangers
11m agoVarlamov will be between the home pipes against the Rangers on Friday, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.
Coach Patrick Roy said the plan was for Varlamov to play the whole game Friday.
-
Isaac Poulter NJ G
Devils' Isaac Poulter: Sent to Utica
2h agoPoulter was reassigned to AHL Utica on Friday.
Poulter made a pair of preseason starts for the Devils this year, but it isn't surprising to see him sent to the minors ahead of the regular season. He's unlikely to factor into New Jersey's plans this year and should spend most, if not all, of the season in the minors.
-
Andrei Vasilevskiy TB G
Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy: In goal Friday
2h agoVasilevsky was the first goalie off Friday, Erik Erlendsson of LightningInsider.com reports, indicating he'll start in goal in the team's preseason road matchup against Carolina.
Vasilevsky also drew the start during Wednesday's home exhibition matchup against the Panthers and turned aside 21 of 23 shots in an overtime loss. The 30-year-old enters the regular season as one of the top fantasy options at goaltender after he posted a 30-20-2 record, 2.90 GAA and .900 save percentage over 52 regular-season appearances last year.
-
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen BUF G
Sabres' Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: In goal against New Jersey
3h agoLuukkonen will be between the pipes for Friday's Global Series matchup with New Jersey, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News reports.
Luukkonen will begin his quest to reach the 30-win mark this season with Friday's matchup. The 25-year-old netminder came up just three victories shy of that threshold last year, finishing the campaign with a 27-22-4 record to go with a career-best 2.57 GAA and five shutouts. With Luukkonen getting the nod Friday, it will be either Devon Levi or James Reimer in the crease versus the Devils on Saturday.
-
Ilya Samsonov LV G
Golden Knights' Ilya Samsonov: Decent in preseason loss
10h agoSamsonov allowed two goals on 26 shots in Thursday's 3-1 preseason loss to the Avalanche. The third goal was an empty-netter.
Samsonov put in a fine effort, but he didn't receive much goal support. The 27-year-old netminder has lost both of his preseason outings despite allowing a modest five goals on 56 shots, which speaks to the defensive strength of Vegas' roster. Samsonov will begin 2024-25 in the backup role, while Adin Hill can be expected to work as the starter.
