  • Chargers' Chase Daniel: Returns from reserve/COVID-19 list

Daniel was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports. The quarterback tested positive for the virus last week and missed the Chargers' Week 16 loss to the Texans. Daniel will return to his role as the primary reserve behind starter Justin Herbert in Week 17 against the Broncos.

  • Chargers' Chase Daniel: Lands on COVID list

Daniel has been placed on the Chargers' reserve/COVID-19 list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Daniel reportedly tested positive, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports. If he is unable to clear the league's health and safety protocols by Sunday, Easton Stick would be in line to back up Justin Herbert under center.

  • Chargers' Chase Daniel: Set for Week 1

Daniel (elbow) wasn't listed on the Week 1 injury report, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. The backup quarterback dinged his elbow during the team's final preseason game, but the injury was never considered serious. Daniel is expected to back up star quarterback Justin Herbert this season.

  • Chargers' Chase Daniel: Suffers minor injury Saturday

Daniel dealt with tingling in his right arm after getting hit on the elbow while being sacked during Saturday's preseason contest against the Seahawks, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports. Daniel drew the start in the preseason finale and remains the favorite to operate as Justin Herbert's primary backup during the regular season. The 34-year-old completed nine passes for 70 yards during the contest as the Chargers' offense was shutout. The injury does not appear to be all that serious, as coach Brandon Staley said there should be no long-term issues.

  • Chargers' Chase Daniel: Starting preseason finale

Daniel will start Saturday's preseason finale against the Seahawks, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports. Daniel will close out the preseason with another start while Justin Herbert watches from the bench. Easton Stick drew the start during last weekend's exhibition matchup against the 49ers, but Daniel remains the favorite to operate as Herbert's top backup during the regular-season opener against Washington on Sept. 12.

  • Chase Daniel: Inks deal with Chargers

Daniel and the Chargers have agreed on a one-year deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Daniel was recently released by Detroit. He will reunite with coaches Brandon Staley and Joe Lombardi in Los Angeles, both of which he has played for in the past. The 34-year-old will bring a veteran presence to the locker room as a backup behind Justin Herbert. The Chargers will be the sixth team the journeyman signal caller has suited up for.

  • Chase Daniel: Released, rather than traded

The Lions released Daniel on Thursday. Detroit reportedly engaged in trade talks regarding Daniel back in February, but with no deal having materialized, the team is instead cutting him to save cap space. The 34-year-old veteran will now be free to pursue a backup role elsewhere, and his reputation as a quality mentor will no doubt result in numerous interested suitors.

  • Lions' Chase Daniel: Could be traded

The Lions have engaged in discussions with teams around the league about dealing Daniel, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. With Matthew Stafford already having been dealt to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff -- and substantial draft capital -- it looks like the Lions are also looking to move on from Daniel, who signed a three-year, $13.05 million contract just last March. Daniels saw action in four games as Detroit's top backup last season. The 34-year-old will count $5.3 million against the cap in 2021 if he's on the roster, so even if Detroit doesn't manage to negotiate a trade, the team could consider simply releasing him to save $2.3 million of that figure.

  • Lions' Chase Daniel: Appears in four games in 2020

Daniel appeared in four games in 2020 and completed 29 of 43 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Daniel probably would have seen considerably more playing time had he been backing up anyone other than Matthew Stafford (ankle/thumb), who yet again proved his toughness in 2020 by playing through at least a trio of injuries to his ankle, thumb and ribs. However, even when he did see the field, Daniel didn't provide much hope for the Lions offense, as his 6.1 yards per pass attempt would have ranked 32nd among NFL quarterbacks this year. With the Lions able to save roughly $2.3 million against the salary cap by letting him go this offseason, there seems to be a good chance Daniel's days in Detroit are about over.

  • Lions' Chase Daniel: Ineffective in relief

Daniel completed 13 of 18 passes for 86 yards in relief of the injured Matthew Stafford (ankle) in Saturday's 47-7 loss to the Buccaneers. Daniel came in after Stafford injured his ankle on Detroit's first drive, and the backup failed to get much going for a Lions team that looked completely overmatched. It was 34-0 Tampa Bay at halftime, and Daniel had only 52 passing yards at that point. When Daniel failed to show any progress in the second half, the Lions brought in third-stringer David Blough for the final three possessions. The offense didn't do any better under Blough, as Jamal Agnew scored Detroit's only touchdown on a punt return. There's a good chance Stafford is shut down for next week's finale against the Vikings, but the team could opt to throw Blough under center over Daniel.

  • Lions' Chase Daniel: Relieves injured Stafford

Daniel completed three of six passes for 29 yards after replacing the injured Matthew Stafford (ribs) in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-24 loss to Green Bay. Daniel led the offense to a field goal to pull within seven, but the Lions failed to recover the ensuing onside kick and Green Bay ran out the clock. Stafford went for X-rays after the game, per Mike Rothstein of ESPN.com, and Daniel would start against the Titans in Week 15 and possibly beyond if Stafford's forced to miss additional time due to the injury.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Moves across NFC North

Daniel is signing a three-year, $13.05 million contract with the Lions, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Daniel spent the past two seasons in Chicago, where he started three games and completed 70.0 percent of his passes for 6.8 yards per attempt, with six touchdowns, four interceptions and 16 sacks. The 33-year-old dump-off artist appears mediocre even by backup QB standards, but he'll at least be an upgrade on last year's disastrous combination of Jeff Driskel (hamstring) and David Blough in Detroit. The Lions expect starting quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) to return to health this spring.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Finishes game

Daniel completed one of four passes for nine yards in the Bears' 17-7 loss to the Rams on Sunday. After Mitch Trubisky was removed from in the fourth quarter with a hip injury, Daniel took over for two drives but was unable to move the chains a single time. Should Trubisky be forced to miss the Week 12 home game against the Giants, Daniel would become a fantasy option in leagues that start two quarterbacks. Earlier in the season when given two starts, he completed 73 percent of his passes while averaging 213 passing yards and 1.5 touchdowns.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Returning to No. 2 role

Daniel is on track to serve as the Bears' backup quarterback for Sunday's game against the Saints with Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder) on track to start, Stacey Dales of NFL Network reports. Coming off a one-game absence followed by the Bears' Week 6 bye, Trubisky carries a questionable designation into Sunday, but Dales notes that the 2017 first-round pick took all the starting reps in practice Thursday and Friday and fared well both mentally and physically. Trubisky will still wear a harness over his non-throwing shoulder for added protection, but barring any in-game setbacks, he'll take every snap while Daniel holds a clipboard. Daniel performed respectably in relief of Trubisky in Week 4 and in his Week 5 start in London, completing 44 of 60 attempts for 426 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Efficient against Panthers

Daniel competed 11 of 13 passes for 120 yards in the Bears' 23-13 preseason loss to Carolina on Thursday. After Mitch Trubisky played one series, Daniel finished the first half while playing with mostly backup skill-position players. He showed the same mastery of the offense that he did in a pair of starts when Trubisky was injured in 2018. He's clearly the favorite to open the season as the No. 2 quarterback, and should he be pressed into regular-season action, he'd be a potential streaming option.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Favorite for No. 2 job

Daniel is viewed as the favorite to win the Bears' No. 2 quarterback job behind returning starter Mitch Trubisky, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports. With $3 million of Daniel's 2019 salary already having been guaranteed, Tyler Bray -- the only other quarterback on the 90-man roster -- is an extreme long shot to unseat Daniel for the backup gig. Financials aside, Daniel also holds a stark advantage over Bray in terms of both experience and historical efficiency.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Returns to backup role

Daniel will return to the No. 2 quarterback gig Sunday against the Rams with Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder) officially cleared to start, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The change under center was telegraphed when Trubisky, who had missed the Bears' last two games, practiced as a full participant Wednesday, then repeated that level of activity both of the next two days. While filing in for the second-year signal-caller, Daniel proved to be a competent game manager, leading the team to a 1-1 record while completing 69.7 percent of his passes for 515 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Daniel will stick in the backup role the rest of the season, barring any further health setbacks for Trubisky.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Confirmed for Week 13 start

Daniel will make his second straight start Sunday against the Giants with Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder) inactive for the contest, Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports. Daniel's starting assignment comes as little surprise after Trubisky was listed as doubtful heading into the weekend. In his first extended regular-season outing since 2014, Daniel impressed in the Bears' Thanksgiving Day victory over the Lions, completing 27 of 37 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. He'll make for a palatable secondary option in two-quarterback leagues in Week 13 before likely retreating to his familiar backup role for the Bears' Week 14 game against the Rams, when it's expected that Trubisky will be ready to go.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: In line for second start

Daniel is expected to draw his second consecutive start in Week 13's road matchup against the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Daniel filled in admirably for the injured Mitch Trubisky (shoulder) on Thanksgiving, picking up the victory and tossing two touchdown passes along the way. While Trubisky made his return to practice Wednesday on a limited basis, the team appears in line to take a conservative approach. Given that Trubisky is back at practice and seemingly could play if the stakes were higher, Week 13 could very well be Daniel's last start of the 2018 season.

  • Bears' Chase Daniel: Solid in Week 12 spot start

Daniel completed 27 of 37 passes for 230 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Bears' 23-16 win over the Lions on Thursday. He also rushed four times for four yards and notched one reception for eight yards. The Bears offense didn't miss a beat with Daniel at the controls for Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder), as the journeyman notched completions to eight different pass catchers and even got in on the fun himself with one grab. Just as important, Daniel remained mistake-free and kept Chicago in the game while the defense also contributed a touchdown via a pick-six of Matthew Stafford. With 10 days until the team's Week 13 tilt against the Giants, Trubisky could well have enough time to recover and start that contest. However, if he isn't able to suit up, the team at least has to have a certain degree of confidence in Daniel's ability to captain coach Matt Nagy's offensive system once more.
