  • Giants' Drew Lock: Says Jones is the starter

Lock said Friday that he's been told Daniel Jones (knee) is the Giants' starting quarterback, Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reports. The question likely was asked in response to Seahawks GM John Schneider saying Thursday that he wanted to re-sign Lock but lost out to the Giants because they offered the opportunity to compete for a starting job. Lock seems to be suggesting otherwise, though Jones' recovery from an ACL tear suffered Nov. 5 could make things interesting. Jones' contract is another factor, with a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025 potentially creating a mid/late-season situation like the one we saw in Denver with Russell Wilson in 2023 (Wilson was benched to ensure he'd stay healthy and reduce the dead-cap charge for releasing him in the offseason).

  • Giants' Drew Lock: In the mix for starting job?

Seahawks GM John Schneider said Thursday that he wanted to re-sign Lock but wasn't able to because the Giants sold him on an opportunity to compete for a starting job, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports. Schneider revealed the interesting bit of information on The Wyman and Bob Show (710 Seattle Sports) shortly after trading for former Commanders QB Sam Howell. Reports suggest Lock signed with the Giants for backup money -- a one-year, $5 million contract, per ESPN -- but he may nonetheless have a chance to start due to Daniel Jones (knee) coming off a disappointing season in which he averaged a career-worst 5.7 yards per pass attempt before suffering an ACL tear. Both quarterbacks are 2019 picks entering their age-27 campaigns, and while Jones has a full guarantee for his $36 million in compensation this year, the only guarantees thereafter are for injuries. Even if Jones ends up starting for most of the season, it could turn into a 2023 Russell Wilson situation where he's benched to avoid those injury guarantees and ensure the team can move on from him in the offseason. The various factors, including Jones' rehab from knee surgery, give Lock a good chance to play at some point this season, though things would get more complicated if the Giants bring in a rookie QB on Day 1 or 2 of the upcoming NFL Draft.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Solid in limited action

Lock completed 48 of 76 passes for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions across four games in the 2023 season. He also rushed five times for 14 yards. Lock started two games, finishing with a 1-1 record after a thrilling win over the Eagles in Week 15. The 27-year-old quarterback recorded 7.1 YPA while 10 of his 76 passes went for 20-plus yards. Lock certainly appears to be one of the top backups in the league, but his chances of being a starter in 2024 are slim, especially with a solid rookie quarterback class coming in. Nevertheless, he'll be a free agent in March and could seek a better chance to start elsewhere, as Geno Smith's contract all but guarantees he's the starter in Seattle to begin next season.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Week 16 Waiver Priority List

We'll see if Lock or Geno Smith starts in Week 16 at Tennessee, and either one should be considered a streaming option against the Titans. For Lock, he only scored 14.1 Fantasy points against the Eagles in Week 15, but he threw a game-winning touchdown to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with under a minute left, which should give him confidence moving forward. And he had 19.3 Fantasy points when he started at San Francisco in Week 14. This is a favorable matchup against Tennessee, and Lock is a good streaming option in deeper leagues if he starts again for Seattle.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Likely starting again Monday

Lock is in line to start Monday's contest against the Eagles, even with Geno Smith (groin) being deemed active by the Seahawks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Smith was able to complete a pregame workout as he tested out his balky groin, but after Seattle posted its list of Week 15 inactives that didn't include his name, he didn't make an appearance during warmups. Lock proceeded to work with the team's first-team offense, with Sean Mannion mixing in behind him. Assuming he gets the nod after Monday's 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff, Lock will get his second start in a row in place of Smith.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Working with first-team offense pregame

Lock was spotted warming up with the Seahawks' first-team offense ahead of Monday's game versus the Eagles, despite Geno Smith (groin) being active, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports. In fact, Smith hasn't been seen on the field during pregame warmups since completing an earlier workout in which he looked like his normal self. The Seahawks have declined to name a starting quarterback with less than 30 minutes to go before Monday's 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff, but Lock may be the favorite to do so over Smith considering the current situation.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Could be needed for spot start

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll suggested after Friday's practice that Lock could start Sunday's game against the 49ers with Geno Smith (groin) listed as questionable and being labeled as a game-time decision, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. "He's been waiting for this opportunity. If this comes to pass he is as ready as he's going to get," Carroll said of Lock. Smith's groin injury cropped up during Thursday's practice, when the quarterback "stumbled over somebody," Carroll relayed to Bell. Carroll went on to note that Smith was rested at Friday's practice, but the Seahawks are seemingly still hopeful that their usual starting signal-caller will be able to play Sunday. If Smith is unable to show enough improvement ahead of Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff, however, Lock has kept himself prepared to make what would be his first start for Seattle since he was acquired from Denver as part of the March 2022 deal that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos. Lock has thus far been limited to just two relief appearances through his one-plus seasons in Seattle, completing four of 12 pass attempts for 66 yards and an interception.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Ineffective in relief showing

Lock completed two of six passes for three yards and an interception in the 17-16 loss to the Rams on Sunday. Geno Smith exited the game late in the third quarter after taking a hard hit from Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Lock entered the game in relief but was unable to get the offense moving, completing his two full drives with a three-and-out and an interception. Smith eventually returned to the game for the Seahawks' final drive, which ended in a Jason Myers missed field goal. The Seahawks play again Thursday versus the 49ers. According to Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune, head coach Pete Carroll expects Smith to be ready. If Smith is unable to go, though, Lock will start in the daunting divisional matchup.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Short relief stint Monday

Lock completed two of six passes for 63 yards in Monday's 24-3 win over the Giants. He also rushed once for 11 yards. Lock closed out the second quarter after Geno Smith left briefly with a knee injury. This was his first regular-season action with the Seahawks. While his completion percentage was ugly, his night featured a short completion to Noah Fant, who raced down the right sideline for a 51-yard pickup. Smith finished the game and should be ready to go following the Seahawks' Week 5 bye, but the situation is worth monitoring in superflex leagues.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Suffers injury

Lock left Saturday's preseason contest against the Cowboys early due to a knee injury, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. Lock stated, "It's good. It'll be alright. I think it was just a precautionary thing," after the game. With the veteran locked into the team's No. 2 role behind starter Geno Smith, it makes sense the team wouldn't bother pushing him and risking anything further. Head coach Pete Carroll added, "It sounds like he's going to be fine after the evaluation. He got a little bit of a strain in the back of his knee, it got hyperextended a little bit, but there's no damage, so they think that he'll play next week."

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Throws two TDs in three quarters

Lock completed 17 of 24 passes for 191 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Thursday's 24-13 preseason win over the Vikings. He added three rushing attempts for 14 yards. After a quiet first quarter, Lock heated up in the second, leading a six-play, 59-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Easop Winston. He stayed in the game for the third quarter, during which Lock threw an interception and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jake Bobo. Undrafted rookie Holton Ahlers replaced Lock for the fourth quarter. Lock's the prohibitive favorite to beat out Ahlers for the backup spot behind Geno Smith, and the former Denver quarterback is likely to play the majority of snaps again in Seattle's second preseason game, Aug. 19 against the Cowboys.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Hefty role on tap Friday

Coach Pete Carroll intends for Lock to play "a lot" in Friday's preseason finale against the Cowboys, Brady Henderson of ESPN reports. Lock missed the team's previous preseason game due to COVID-19, but he should get a chance to make up for lost time with plenty of playing time Friday. Carroll added that the team is unlikely to decide on a starting quarterback between Lock and Geno Smith (knee) until closer to the regular season. Still, a strong performance Friday would go a long way in helping Lock make his case for the Week 1 starting job.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Back at practice

Lock (illness) returned to practice Sunday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Lock sat out this past Thursday's preseason game (which he had been in line to start) against the Bears after testing positive for COVID-19, but he's back on the field Sunday and thus is a candidate to start this coming Friday's preseason finale against the Cowboys. At this stage, the Seahawks' unofficial posted depth chart lists Geno Smith (knee bruise) ahead of Lock, but the team has yet to announce which of the two QBs is slated to start Seattle's regular-season opener against the Broncos on Monday, Sept. 12.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Will not play Thursday

Lock will not play in Thursday's preseason matchup with the Bears after testing positive for COVID-19, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. This is unfortunate timing for Lock, as he handled all of the first-team reps at practice Tuesday and was slated to draw the start against Chicago. While coach Pete Carroll maintains that Geno Smith is the team's No. 1 quarterback, the starting opportunity would have been a chance for Lock to make an impression. He will now have to wait until he's cleared to return to practice in order to prepare for his next chance to see game action, which would come in the Seahawks' preseason finale Aug. 26. In his absence, Smith and Jacob Eason are the lone healthy quarterbacks on the Seahawks roster.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Outplays Smith in team scrimmage

Lock completed 18 of 27 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's team scrimmage, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Lock spent four of five offensive drives with the second-team offense, where he played against the first-team defense. On the other side of the competition, Geno Smith handled nearly all the first-team reps on offense, where he battled against the second-team defense. Smith completed 10 of 19 passes for 94 yards. Lock had the inferior supporting cast and played against better competition, but he managed to put up better numbers anyway, despite those numbers being mediocre. Head coach Pete Carroll didn't make any judgements following the scrimmage, but Lock may have the edge heading into the preseason, which starts next Saturday against the Steelers.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Still trailing in QB competition

Head coach Pete Carroll said Thursday that Lock is trailing Geno Smith in the quarterback competition following this week's mandatory minicamp, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Carroll also stated that Lock isn't too far behind and will have a good chance to claim the starting job during training camp and the preseason. Smith's main edge comes from his knowledge of the system after three years with the team. Neither quarterback has proven to be effective for long stretches in the NFL, but Lock is certainly capable of getting hot during the preseason and winning the job for Week 1.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Survives draft day

Lock is expected to compete with Geno Smith and Jacob Eason for the starting quarterback job after the Seahawks didn't select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports. There was only one quarterback drafted in the first 73 picks, and despite having four picks in that stretch, the Seahawks opted to upgrade their offensive line and add a high-end running back and edge rusher. That's good news for Lock, who was part of the trade package that the Seahawks received for Russell Wilson. Lock has a big arm but was mediocre over 24 games (21 starts) with the Broncos over the last three years, completing 59.3 percent of his passes for 4,740 yards (6.7 YPA), 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also ran for 285 yards and five scores. Unless the Seahawks bring in Baker Mayfield via trade or a veteran in free agency, the main competition in training camp will be between Lock and Smith while Eason makes a longshot bid.

  • Seahawks' Drew Lock: Sent to Seattle

The Broncos dealt Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive end Shelby Harris and five draft picks to the Seahawks for Russell Wilson and a fourth-round pick Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports. A 2019 second-rounder, Lock has struggled when he's stepped foot on the field, completing 59.3 percent of his passes for 4,740 yards, 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in 24 appearances while compiling an 8-13 record as a starter. Once the trade is on the books, Lock and Jacob Eason will be the only signal-callers on Seattle's roster, meaning the team likely will continue to tinker with the QB room as the offseason goes on.

  • Broncos' Drew Lock: Still headed for Week 18 start

Lock (shoulder) remains on track to start Saturday against the Chiefs after Teddy Bridgewater (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. Lock was listed as a limited practice participant Tuesday, so barring a setback with his right shoulder, he'll pick up his third consecutive start to close out the season. He'll still likely need to practice fully Thursday to avoid taking an injury designation into the contest.

  • Broncos' Drew Lock: Limited to begin Week 18 prep

Lock was listed as a limited participant on Tuesday's estimated practice report due to a right shoulder injury, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. Lock suffered the injury in the first half of last week's 34-13 loss to the Chargers, but he missed only one series before finishing the day with 18 completions for 245 yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts. The signal-caller's ability to return to the contest suggests that his estimated limitations two days after the game are likely just maintenance-related. Assuming he upgrades to full activity by Thursday, Lock will be in line to make his third straight start Saturday against Kansas City, as head coach Vic Fangio already told the media Monday that he's planning on having the 25-year-old direct the offense once again since Teddy Bridgewater has yet to resume practicing since entering the concussion protocol Dec. 19. Brett Rypien, who made a brief cameo in relief in Week 17, is on track to serve as Lock's backup in the season finale.
