Player Outlook
Johnson is a free agent at the time of publication, and we'll see if he can land a backup role with a new team. He spent 2022 with the Jets as a reserve running back and playing on special teams, but he only had 42 total touches, 248 total yards and one touchdown. He's not likely to earn a prominent role with a new team in 2023, and he's not worth drafting in any Fantasy leagues.

  • Bills' Ty Johnson: Continued usage with new OC

Johnson carried six times for 19 yards and was not targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 37-34 overtime loss to the Eagles. Johnson did catch three balls -- one for a touchdown -- in Week 11, so it's not like the team views him as a one-trick pony. He's still behind James Cook and Latavious Murray in the pecking order, plus Damien Harris (neck) could eventually return before season's end, but it's at least worth noting that Johnson has been given an opportunity in the offense after previously not seeing more than one offensive snap in any game under former offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, who was fired after Week 10. With interim OC Joe Brady now in charge, Johnson has seen 24 offensive snaps over the past two weeks. While Johnson still is too far down the pecking order to consider using, he's also probably just an injury or two away from having a meaningful role in an offense that can put up a high number of points.

  • Bills' Ty Johnson: Week 12 Waiver Priority List

It was Johnson and not Leonard Fournette who added a new element to Buffalo's offense in Week 11 against the Jets, and we'll see if Johnson is a permanent addition to the rotation moving forward for new offensive coordinator Joe Brady. James Cook and Latavius Murray remain in the mix for the Bills, so Johnson will have limited touches, but he did well against the Jets with three carries for 11 yards and three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown on three targets. The Bills don't have an easy matchup in Week 12 at Philadelphia before a bye in Week 13, but Johnson is worth stashing in deeper leagues for 1 percent of your FAB to see what happens over the next few weeks.

  • Bills' Ty Johnson: Scores TD against former club

Johnson carried the ball three times for 11 yards and caught all three of his targets for 47 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 32-6 win over the Jets. After seeing only two offensive snaps in his first four games as a Bill, Johnson suddenly found himself with a real workload in the backfield -- the most noticeable change new offensive coordinator Joe Brady made in his first game at the helm. Johnson's first touches came on Buffalo's third possession late in the first quarter, and he capped his big performance with a 28-yard TD catch from Josh Allen early in the third. Johnson, who played for the Jets from 2020-22, could be taking on a consistent change-of-pace role behind James Cook heading into a Week 12 trip to Philadelphia.

  • Bills' Ty Johnson: Replaces Damien Harris on roster

The Bills signed Johnson to the 53-man roster Friday. He had resided on the Bills' practice squad prior to the transaction, while fellow running back Damien Harris (concussion/neck) was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move. Johnson will provide depth in a Buffalo backfield that also includes James Cook and Latavius Murray. The running back out of Maryland has appeared in 62 NFL games and has a career average of 4.4 yards per carry.

  • Ty Johnson: Joins Buffalo's practice squad

Johnson signed with the Bills' practice squad Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. Johnson will provide organizational depth for Buffalo behind a relatively unproven backfield consisting of James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray. The former Maryland running back has appeared in 62 games between the Lions and Jets since joining the professional ranks in 2019.

  • Ty Johnson: Let go by Bills

Johnson was released by Buffalo on Tuesday. Johnson signed with the Bills last Monday and rushed 11 times for 51 yards in the team's preseason finale against the Bears. That performance wasn't enough to earn him a spot on the 53-man roster, though he could end up on Buffalo's practice squad.

  • Bills' Ty Johnson: Set to sign with Buffalo

Johnson agreed to a deal with the Bills on Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. The report notes that Johnson, who was released by the Jets with a non-football injury designation in April, has moved past a pectoral injury that he had been dealing with. Now that he's healthy, the 2019 sixth-rounder is in a position to help fill the void created by Nyheim Hines' season-ending knee injury. In that context, Johnson should have a chance to compete for third-down work in a Buffalo backfield that also includes James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray.

  • Ty Johnson: Recovering from pec injury

Johnson announced via his Instagram account that he recently suffered a pectoral injury, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. Johnson was released by the Jets with a non-football injury designation in April after he tore his pectoral while working out on his own. After he followed the advice of the team and underwent surgery, New York elected to let him go. The running back played in 17 games last season, recording 160 yards and a score on 30 carries while reeling in 12 catches for 88 yards. Once healthy, Johnson will likely get another opportunity to crack an active roster.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Back with the Jets

Johnson is signing a one-year deal to remain with the Jets, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. In 17 games with the Jets during the 2022 season, Johnson recorded 30 carries for 160 yards and one touchdown, while adding 12 catches (on 24 targets) for 88 yards. Now that he's back with the team for 2023, Johnson is slated to reprise his depth role in New York's backfield behind Breece Hall (knee), Michael Carter and Zonovan Knight. The 2019 sixth-rounder is also a key special teamer for the Jets, per Cimini.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Minimal role throughout 2022

Johnson rushed five times for 12 yards and caught two of three targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 11-6 loss to the Dolphins. He wrapped up the 2022 season with 30 carries for 160 yards and one touchdown, as well as 12 catches for 88 yards on 24 targets. Johnson set career lows in both rushing and receiving yards in his fourth NFL season, though he averaged a career-high 5.3 yards per carry. The 25-year-old running back out of Maryland will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Week 18 Waiver Priority List

Johnson ended up as the lead rusher for the Jets in Week 17 at Seattle with eight carries for 46 yards and one catch for 11 yards on five targets. I still expect Zonovan Knight to get more touches than Johnson in Week 18 at Miami, but Johnson might be worth using as a flex if the Jets decide to play him 47 percent of the snap again like he did against the Seahawks. It's tough to trust Johnson, especially with Michael Carter also a factor, but Johnson might be worth a flier in deeper leagues.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Leading rusher in Seattle

Johnson carried the ball eight times for 46 yards and caught one of five targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 23-6 loss to the Seahawks. It was a nightmarish performance from the entire Jets offense in a must-win game, and Johnson wound up leading the team in rushing yards. It's only the second time all season he's topped 17 rushing yards, and with New York now eliminated from playoff contention, it's not clear how the backfield workload will be split between Johnson, Zonovan Knight and Michael Carter in Week 18 against the Dolphins.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Week 14 Waiver Priority List

I'm not sure what the Jets will do with Johnson once Michael Carter (ankle) is healthy, but he's done a nice job in tandem with Zonovan Knight over the past two weeks since Carter got hurt. Johnson scored 14 PPR points in Week 12 against the Bears and then had six catches for 38 yards on seven targets at Minnesota. He's not going to get many carries, but his work in the passing game, especially with Mike White, can help him in PPR. Johnson is worth adding for up to 5 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Catches six passes with Carter out

Johnson rushed once for three yards and caught six of seven targets for 38 yards in Sunday's 27-22 loss to Minnesota. With Michael Carter (ankle) inactive, Johnson was the Jets' running back of choice in passing situations. Johnson will either take on a similar role in Week 14 against the Bills if Carter sits again or be relegated to the bench if Carter returns, as Zonovan Knight has emerged as the Jets' primary running back since Carter went down.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Committee role likely in Week 13

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Johnson is expected to be part of a three-man backfield committee Sunday against the Vikings that also includes Zonovan Knight and James Robinson, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Robinson was the odd man out as a healthy inactive in last week's win over the Bears, but Saleh suggested that Robinson, Johnson and Knight will all see opportunities Sunday with lead back Michael Carter (ankle) listed as doubtful and not expected to play. After Carter departed last week upon taking two snaps in the second half, Knight finished with a 64 percent snap share after halftime, compared to a 29 percent mark from Johnson. The addition of Robinson to the mix further complicates matters, so it may be tough on Johnson to replicate the strong production he delivered against the Bears during his limited playing time. Johnson carried five times for 62 yards and hauled in one of two targets for a 16-yard gain across his 15 total snaps.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Two carries in win

Johnson rushed twice for 17 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Bills. James Robinson (knee) was viewed as questionable heading into the game, but he suited up and handled 15 touches. With 13 touches going to Michael Carter, there weren't many opportunities left over for Johnson, who is a distant third on New York's running back depth chart.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Two carries, two targets in Week 8

Johnson rushed twice for six yards and didn't catch either of his two targets in Sunday's 22-17 loss to the Patriots. New York's acquisition of James Robinson via trade earlier in the week kept Johnson relegated to a third-string role behind Robinson and Michael Carter. Breece Hall (knee) is out for the season, but Johnson's role in the Jets backfield remains minimal.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Two touches after Hall injury

Johnson rushed once for three yards and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 16-9 win over the Broncos. Breece Hall (knee) departed in the first half with what's feared to be a torn ACL. Michael Carter stepped into the lead role in Hall's absence, while Johnson took on the change-of-pace duties previously occupied by Carter. If Hall indeed is done for the season, Johnson should have a clear path to a handful of touches per game as Carter's backup.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Concludes quiet preseason

Johnson rushed seven times for 15 yards in Sunday's 31-27 preseason win over the Giants. Johnson dealt with a hamstring injury in training camp and never quite got going this preseason. The 24-year-old running back seems to be definitively behind Breece Hall, Michael Carter and Tevin Coleman on the depth chart, but Johnson still has a chance to make the 53-man roster if the Jets opt to keep four running backs.

  • Jets' Ty Johnson: Four touches against Atlanta

Johnson (hamstring) rushed three times for eight yards and caught his only target for three yards in Monday's 24-16 preseason win over the Falcons. Johnson returned to game action after sitting out much of August with a hamstring injury. The injury was an ill-timed one for a player who's on the roster bubble, but Johnson will likely get more touches in Sunday's preseason finale against the Giants as he tries to earn a spot.
