At the time of publication, Wentz is a free agent, and we'll see if he signs with a new team prior to training camp. He should not be drafted in any Fantasy leagues. Wentz was benched in 2022 in Washington, and he will likely be a backup quarterback wherever he ends up. He still has potential to be a starting Fantasy quarterback in Superflex and two-quarterback leagues if he gets the chance to start with a team, but he will have to prove himself first. At 30, Wentz's best days could be behind him, and he has averaged fewer than 20 Fantasy points per game in three years in a row with the Eagles, Colts and Commanders.
Wentz has been working out in Los Angeles and is open to taking a backup role, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Wentz averaged less than 7.0 yards per pass attempt and 220 passing yards per game each of the past three seasons wile starting for three different teams. He's reportedly received interest from NFL teams -- presumably for backup jobs -- since Washington released him in February. The 30-year-old is unlikely to find a chance to compete for a starting job but might be hoping injuries open that up at some point before Week 1 if he's patient.

As expected, Wentz has been let go to save over $26 million in cap space before his roster bonus triggered March 17. The veteran quarterback was traded to Washington ahead of the 2022 campaign, but after two solid outings to start the season, he completed just 60.8 percent of his passes over his next six appearances and threw six interceptions to just four touchdowns during that stretch. There's plenty of teams in need of a starting quarterback, but Wentz's recent track record may force him to settle for a backup gig in 2023. If he joins a new team this summer, it'll mark his fourth squad in as many years.

Wentz presumably needs to accept a pay cut to have any chance at returning, as he's scheduled for a non-guaranteed $20 million base salary in 2023 and has a $5 million roster bonus due March 17, per Spotrac.com. There were already rumblings of Wentz taking over for the Commanders following the team's recent skid, and that narrative will only get louder after the backup outperformed the starter (albeit in garbage time). Head coach Ron Rivera said that he will review the film and make a decision on his starting quarterback well ahead of next Sunday's kickoff against the Browns, the Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala reports. It was reported earlier in the day that Wentz was dealing with a biceps tendon strain near his throwing shoulder, and he certainly didn't look 100 percent during Thursday's forgettable statistical showing. The fact the veteran quarterback also had to take another three sacks likely didn't help his condition, but Wentz stayed away from turnovers for the first time all season and leaned heavily on his defense and rookie running back Brian Robinson with success. The fact Wentz was once again down Jahan Dotson (hamstring) and Logan Thomas (calf) also hurt his overall prospects, but he'll have a chance for better health and perhaps the return of his two pass catchers with the extended time off before a Week 7 home matchup against the Packers on Oct. 23.

Wentz was only sacked twice in this game, but he took another 11 hits after enduring nine sacks and 17 hits in Week 3. Some of Wentz's pressure struggles are brought on by himself, but 28 hits in two weeks is just too much even if the quarterback is partially to blame. If there's good news, it's that the Eagles and Cowboys pass rushes both look formidable while Week 5 opponent Tennessee probably has a more manageable pass rush. If Wentz can fix his pressure issues, there should be fantasy production to be had, because he still has solid skill players around him and Washington has averaged around 40 pass attempts per game.

Wentz completed 27 of 41 pass attempts for 313 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 28-22 win over Jacksonville.
Wentz faced off against his old head coach, Doug Pederson, and put together a vintage performance from their Super Bowl season with the Eagles. The 29-year-old has had an inconsistent career, but he is coming off of a solid 2021 while looking sharp in his debut with Washington. His risky style of taking deep shots can result in some ugly interceptions, but fantasy managers in two-QB leagues (or superflex) will take the turnovers so long as he produces gaudy passing totals like Sunday's. As for standard leagues, Wentz is likely just an injury replacement or bye week fill-in until we see him put up these kind of numbers consistently and against better defenses.
