  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Signs deal with Minnesota

McBride signed a reserve/future contract with the Vikings on Monday, Craig Peters of the team's official website reports. McBride spent the entirety of the 2023 campaign on the Vikings' practice squad after the team picked him in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The running back will now look to secure a spot on Minnesota's 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 season.

  • DeWayne McBride: Stays with Vikings' practice squad

McBride signed with Minnesota's practice squad Wednesday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. McBride failed to make the team out of training camp, but the 2023 seventh-round pick out of UAB will remain in Minnesota's organization. He could eventually play a role for the Vikings, though the team's 53-man roster has a crowded running back room, which includes Alexander Mattison (undisclosed), Ty Chandler, Myles Gaskin and Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed).

  • DeWayne McBride: Cut by Minnesota

The Vikings waived McBride on Tuesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Despite Alexander Mattison and Kene Nwangwu missing the entire preseason due to undisclosed injuries, McBride didn't appear to be in serious consideration for a spot on the Vikings' initial 53-man roster. Assuming McBride clears waivers, the team may bring the 2023 seventh-rounder back as a member of its 16-man practice squad.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Leads backfield in final exhibtion

McBride rushed the ball eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 18-17 preseason loss to the Cardinals. None of Alexander Mattison (undisclosed), Ty Chandler or Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed) logged a carry, leaving McBride to lead the backfield. He was efficient with the opportunity and also punched in a score from one yard away. McBride will likely begun the regular season buried on the depth chart, though the uncertain health status of Mattison and Nwangwu could change things.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Remains buried on depth chart

McBride carried the ball six times for 18 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 24-16 preseason loss to the Titans. McBride saw only one carry in the first half, during which Ty Chandler earned the majority of the work. McBride did take the field more in the second half, highlighted by a one-yard touchdown plunge with just under six minutes remaining in the game. His usage suggests he's currently fourth on the depth chart, as neither Alexander Mattison (undisclosed) and Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed) suited up.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Getting more practice reps

McBride picked up some extra reps in Tuesday's practice with Alexander Mattison and Kene Nwangwu both banged up, but none of the backup running backs in Minnesota have made a strong impression so far this summer, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Even with the Vikings providing no indication that Mattison or Nwangwu is tending to a serious injury, there's sure to be more chatter about the Vikings bringing in a veteran running back. They were the only team in the league to enter training camp with fewer than five tailbacks on the roster, and by the end of Tuesday's practice, it was only McBride and Ty Chandler left standing healthy. If nothing else, Minnesota may need to sign someone to share the load with McBride and the other backups this preseason, as Mattison is unlikely to play much during the exhibition slate now that he's locked in as the starter. McBride has a fantastic opportunity by the standards of a rookie seventh-round pick -- a situation in which he can quickly climb to second or third on the depth chart -- though Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has cautioned that it's a tall order for the 22-year-old to learn the ins and outs of his offense this summer.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Inks rookie deal

McBride (hamstring) signed a four-year contract with the Vikings on Tuesday, Craig Peters of the team's official site reports. Alec Lewis of The Athletic notes that the 2022 seventh-round pick, who wasn't able to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine or at UAB's pro day due to a hamstring injury, was spotted at Tuesday practice. Now that he's presumably past the health concern, McBride will look to cement a depth role in a Minnesota backfield that currently includes Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu. That said, Cook's future with the team is unclear and if the Vikings part ways with him, McBride's chances of landing a Week 1 roster spot would improve.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Perfect landing spot in Minny

The Vikings selected McBride in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, 222nd overall. With plenty of rumors regarding the status of star running back Dalvin Cook, this becomes an interesting landing spot for the No. 2 rushing leader in college last season. McBride wasn't able to participate in the NFL Combine or UAB's Pro Day due to a hamstring injury, but by all accounts the talented back is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. While McBride is a shifty runner and reactive when hitting the hole, the 21-year-old recorded just five receptions throughout his collegiate career, and thus likely seemed destined for two-down work at the NFL level.
