Player Outlook
Smythe is expected to be the starting tight end for the Dolphins this season, but he has minimal Fantasy value in that role. He is not worth drafting in the majority of leagues. Smythe replaces the departed Mike Gesicki as the No. 1 tight end, and Gesicki struggled to produce at a high level in 2022. The problem for Gesicki last season -- and now Smythe this year -- is Miami predominantly features Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in the passing game, which is unlikely to change. At best, target Smythe off the waiver wire if he starts off the season playing well.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Catches all three targets Sunday

Smythe finished with three receptions on as many targets for 23 yards in Sunday's 24-17 win over the Patriots. Smythe tallied three receptions for the second consecutive week, but his impact was felt more in the running game as a blocker than in fantasy circles. The 28-year-old replaced Miami's former starting tight end Mike Gesicki, who lined up on the opposing sideline after signing with New England this past offseason. Smythe isn't nearly the receiving threat that Gesicki was, but he could still provide value in deeper formats if he can develop as a red-zone threat as the season progresses.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Week 2 Waiver Priority List

In deeper leagues, you can take a flier on Smythe to see if he becomes a regular contributor in Miami's offense, and he just had seven targets in Week 1 at the Chargers with three catches for 44 yards. Last year, the Dolphins didn't lean on their tight end in Mike Gesicki, but maybe that's a new wrinkle this season with Smythe. He's worth adding for 1 percent of your FAB to find out.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Week 16 Waiver Priority List

In deeper leagues, you can take a flier on Smythe to see if he becomes a regular contributor in Miami's offense, and he just had seven targets in Week 1 at the Chargers with three catches for 44 yards. • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Second in targets

Smythe recorded three receptions on seven targets for 44 yards in Sunday's 36-34 win over the Chargers. Smythe surprisingly finished second on the team in targets, behind only Tyreek Hill. His final production isn't particularly noteworthy, but he got looks as a deep threat and in the red zone. With Hill and Jaylen Waddle the only pass catchers with locked-in roles, Smythe could have the chance to emerge as more of a receiving threat this season.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Getting more involved as a receiver

Smythe has been increasingly involved as a receiver in recent joint practices with the Texans, Omar Kelly and Alain Poupart of SI.com report. Smythe has solidified himself as Miami's top tight end mostly by virtue of his blocking skills, but in practice Wednesday he caught four passes, including a 38-yard gain in the two-minute drill at the end of the session. While Smythe is unlikely to be regularly utilized as a receiver in coach Mike McDaniel's scheme, especially as long as both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle (abdomen) are on the field, he is a capable pass-catcher if called upon. It's notable that his involvement on passing plays has grown with Waddle sidelined for the time being. Smythe remains off the fantasy radar in most formats, but he could be a solid stash in leagues that start two tight ends.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Inks two-year extension

The Dolphins signed Smythe to a two-year contract extension Monday. Smythe's contract extension comes in the wake of Miami letting Mike Gesicki walk in free agency to ultimately end up with the division-rival Patriots. Though Smythe has generally thrived as a rotational tight end with an emphasis on blocking, having only once reached the 300-yard receiving mark in his five-year career, he's currently staring down an interesting opportunity atop the Dolphins' depth chart. With the team also having traded Hunter Long to the Rams as part of a deal to acquire Jalen Ramsey (shoulder), though, it seems likely that Miami will add to the TE position in April's draft.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Production drops in 2022

Smythe secured 15 of 20 targets for 129 yards and one score across 16 games with Miami in the 2022 regular season. He also handled two carries for one yard and a touchdown. Smythe and Mike Gesicki both saw their receiving stats plummet under first-year head coach Mike McDaniel, whose arrival coincided with the Dolphins' usage of two-tight-end sets dropping off significantly. Gesicki is headed for free agency this offseason while Smythe is entering the final year of his contract in 2023, but that hardly guarantees that Smythe will see the overwhelming share of snaps at tight end in 2023. Even if he does, Smythe will operate primarily as a blocker and is unlikely to handle heavy volume as a pass catcher.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Held to one catch again

Smythe secured his only target for nine yards during Sunday's 23-21 win over the Patriots. Smythe has put together three straight games with just one catch, and he's still looking for his first receiving score of the season. The tight end remains off the fantasy radar heading into a Week 18 regular-season finale against the Jets, while Mike Gesicki (four targets and one score Sunday) is at least showing signs of life.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Records one catch

Smythe secured his only target for eight yards during Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Packers. Smythe played 62 percent of offensive snaps during Sunday's loss, but his role once again involved more blocking than receiving work. Considering that Smythe hasn't topped 25 receiving yards yet in a game this season, he can safely be left off the fantasy radar when the Dolphins take on the Patriots in a must-win Week 17 divisional contest.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Will play vs. Green Bay

Smythe (quadriceps) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Packers, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. The tight end should be good to go without any restrictions after a full practice Friday. Smythe gets plenty of playing time but is used primarily as a blocker in a Dolphins offense that isn't hurting for options in the passing game.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Gets in full practice

Smythe (quadriceps/knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Saturday's game in Buffalo after practicing fully Thursday, Travis Wingfield of the Dolphins' official site reports. Despite appearing on the Dolphins' Week 15 injury report with two different issues, Smythe still managed to practice in some capacity Tuesday through Thursday. He should be ready to handle his usual role Sunday as the Dolphins' top tight end, with his blocking prowess going a long way toward him dwarfing Mike Gesicki's snap counts over the past two games. Though he's cleared a 60 percent snap share on both of those occasions while Gesicki has been held under 40 percent both times, Smythe has produced only two receptions for 21 yards between those contests.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Limited on Tuesday's estimate

Smythe (quad/knee) was listed as a limited participant on Tuesday's practice estimate, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports. Smythe appears to have picked up a combination of both quad and knee issues during Sunday's loss to the Chargers, putting his Week 15 availability in question. The 27-year-old will have two more chances to ramp back up to full speed in practice in order to avoid carrying an injury designation into Saturday's contest against Buffalo.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Not targeted in loss

Smythe was not targeted during Sunday's 23-17 loss to the Chargers. Smythe logged his fifth game of the season without a target during Sunday night's loss. Elsewhere, Mike Gesicki drew two targets but went without a catch for the third straight game. The tight end position has been one to avoid for Miami in recent weeks, and that same maxim could serve fantasy managers well heading into a Week 15 matchup against the Bills.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Suits up Sunday

Smythe (quadriceps/knee) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Chargers. Smythe was limited at practice Wednesday through Friday, but he'll give it a go versus Los Angeles. Through 11 games to date, the 27-year-old has recorded just nine catches on 12 targets for 75 yards and a TD, so he's not a high-percentage fantasy lineup option these days, with fellow TE Mike Gesicki also potentially factoring into the Dolphins' Week 14 pass-catching mix.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Listed as questionable

Smythe (quadriceps) is questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Chargers, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Smythe was limited at each practice Wednesday through Friday due to a quadriceps injury and will likely be a game-time decision Sunday. If he's sidelined, Mike Gesicki, Hunter Long and Tanner Conner would be candidates for increased snaps.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Logs partial activity Wednesday

Smythe (quad/knee) was limited in Wednesday's practice, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports. Smythe appears to have picked up both quad and knee injuries during the Dolphins' Week 13 loss to the 49ers, explaining why he opened the week in limited fashion. The 27-year-old tight end has two more chances to practice in full before the team is forced to tag him with an injury designation heading into Sunday night's matchup against the Chargers.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Makes two grabs in loss

Smythe secured both of his targets for 21 yards during Sunday's 33-17 loss to the 49ers. Smythe once again outperformed Mike Gesicki, who failed to catch his only target Week 14, but neither tight end has been a consistent fantasy option for fantasy managers this season. Given that Smythe is a near lock for at least 50 percent of offensive snaps, he warrants fantasy consideration in formats that start multiple tight ends heading into a Week 14 matchup against the Chargers.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: First receiving touchdown of season

Smythe secured his only target for a four-yard touchdown during Sunday's 30-15 win over the Texans. Smythe previously scored on the ground versus the Jets back in Week 5, but Sunday's blowout win over Houston provided the No. 2 tight end an opportunity to hit paydirt through the air. Of course, Sunday's score was also Smythe's only catch since Week 5, so he can safely be left off the fantasy radar heading into a tough Week 13 matchup against the 49ers.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Available against Browns

Smythe (hamstring) is available for Sunday's game against the Browns, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports. Smythe was limited during each of Miami's three practice sessions this week due to a hamstring injury, but he doesn't have an injury designation for Week 10. The 27-year-old hasn't had any receptions over the last three games.

  • Dolphins' Durham Smythe: Logs limited session Wednesday

Smythe (hamstring) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Smythe continues to battle a hamstring injury, but he's suited up for three straight games. He was limited during each practice ahead of Week 9, so despite reappearing on the injury report Wednesday, the reserve tight end is likely still on track to suit up Sunday against the Browns.
