Rams' Stetson Bennett: Goes to NFI list
The Rams placed Bennett on the reserve/NFI list Wednesday, Greg Beacham of The Associated Press reports.
It's not clear what precisely prompted the move, partially because Coach Sean McVay declined to explain it to reporters. Bennett had reportedly been dealing with shoulder soreness ahead of Week 1, so it could be that, but for now all that is known for certain is that the Rams will need a new backup quarterback for the immediate future.

Rams' Stetson Bennett: Dealing with illness
Bennett's placement on the reserve/NFI list Wednesday was due to an illness, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
When Rams coach Sean McVay was initially asked about Bennett on Wednesday, he declined to indicate the nature of the issue that resulted in the quarterback landing on the reserve/NFI list. It has since been made clear that Bennett is dealing with an illness, though McVay declined to elaborate "out of respect for the particulars and the specifics." Bennett had been managing a shoulder injury for several weeks, but that appears unrelated to Wednesday's transaction.

Rams' Stetson Bennett: Struggles in limited action
Bennett completed four of nine passes for 14 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Rams' 41-0 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
Bennett drew the start but struggled for the majority of his three drives. The rookie capped off his final possession with an interception at the Broncos' 37-yard line on a pass intended for Demarcus Robinson, putting an ugly finish to what had been a solid preseason coming into the night. Bennett had completed 32 of 53 passes for 333 yards with a touchdown and an interception over the first pair of exhibitions, and it now remains to be seen whether the Rams will opt to keep a third quarterback on the active roster behind Matthew Stafford and Brett Rypien.

Rams' Stetson Bennett: Extended action again Saturday
Bennett completed 15 of 24 passes for 142 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushed once for four yards in the Rams' 34-17 preseason loss to the Raiders on Saturday night.
Bennett didn't quite put up the same caliber of numbers as he did during the preseason-opening win over the Chargers last Saturday night, but he still logged valuable reps and put together a solid performance. The fact the rookie fourth-round pick has been given such an extensive look over the first two preseason games could theoretically mean he's being considered for the No. 2 job, but the more likely scenario is that head coach Sean McVay might be contemplating keeping both Brett Rypien and Bennett on the final roster behind Matthew Stafford.
