Leatherwood was designated to return from the reserve/non-football illness list in mid-October, but he's officially been added to the active roster ahead of Week 8. Now that he's healthy and available, the 2021 first-round pick figures to provide depth to multiple positions along Chicago's offensive line.

The Bears designated Leatherwood (illness) for return to practice from the reserve/non-football illness list Wednesday, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports.
The transaction kicks off a 21-day window for Chicago remove Leatherwood from the reserve/non-football illness list. He started all 17 games for the Raiders as a rookie in 2021, and the Bears will hope he proves worthy of a similar role with Chicago once fully healthy.

Bears' Alex Leatherwood: Lands on non-football illness list
The Bears placed Leatherwood on the non-football illness list Wednesday, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Leatherwood is dealing with mononucleosis. He'll be forced to miss at least four games after the move, but it appears he could return quickly after that. "We feel great about where he is and him coming back," Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday.

Leatherwood was claimed off waivers by the Bears on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
After attempting to trade him to all 31 other teams in the league, the Raiders waived Leatherwood on Tuesday, but he will now get another shot in Chicago. The former first-rounder will likely open the season as depth option on the interior offensive line.

Leatherwood was waived by the Raiders on Tuesday, Vic Tafur and Larry Holder of The Athletic report.
Las Vegas reportedly shopped Leatherwood in trade packages to multiple teams this offseason, though the team struggled to find a partner due to his $6 million in guaranteed salary over the next three seasons, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The 2021 first-round pick slotted in mostly at right guard over 17 games with Las Vegas due to his limitations as an offensive tackle. Leatherwood will now pass through waivers before hitting free agency, should he go unclaimed.
