  • Colts' Zack Moss: Makes impact in season debut

Moss rushed 18 times for 88 yards and a touchdown and brought in all four targets for 19 yards in the Colts' 31-20 win over the Texans on Sunday.

Moss enjoyed a noteworthy season debut after missing Week 1 as he completed his recovery from a broken forearm suffered in training camp. The fourth-year pro picked up where he left off during his strong season-ending four-game run in 2022, and he found the end zone on a hard-charging 11-yard run early in the second quarter. Moss, who notably was the only Colts back to record a carry Sunday, has at least two more games at the top of the ground attack before Jonathan Taylor (PUP, ankle) potentially returns, which is no sure proposition considering he reportedly remains interested in being traded.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Headed for starting role Week 2

Moss (shoulder) was a full participant in practices Wednesday through Friday and is expected to serve as the Colts' starting running back Sunday in Houston, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.

Moss sat out the Colts' Week 1 loss to the Jaguars while he continued to recover from the fractured forearm he sustained in training camp. Even though Moss has gotten only one full week of practice under his belt since suffering the injury, the Colts could be comfortable with immediately leaning on him as their top option on the ground, given Evan Hull's (knee) recent move to injured reserve along with the nightmarish performance that fill-in starter Deon Jackson (13 carries for 14 yards, five catches for 14 yards, two lost fumbles) turned in against Jacksonville. Jackson may retain a role as the Colts' top passing-down back, but Moss offers a clear upgrade as a ball carrier after he averaged 4.8 yards per carry on 76 attempts for Indianapolis in 2022 after coming over in a midseason trade with the Bills. With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) out at least three more games and uncertain to play for the Colts even once fully healthy, Moss might have a path to operating as Indianapolis' lead back for the rest of the season.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Full practice to start week

Moss (arm) was a full participant in practice Wednesday.

Moss is on track to make his 2023 debut this Sunday against Houston and may jump right into a key role after fill-in starter Deon Jackson fumbled twice and gained just 28 yards on 18 touches and a spot in the doghouse in the Week 1 loss to the Jaguars. Also, Evan Hull (knee) suffered an injury that sent him to injured reserve. Jackson should still be involved, especially in passing situations, but a depth chart featuring him, Moss and Jake Funk leaves Moss as the favorite to get the most carries. Moss averaged 17.3 carries for 83.5 yards over the final four weeks of last season, albeit with only one touchdown and four catches for 12 yards. He likely would have started Week 1 against Jacksonville if he hadn't been finishing up his recovery from Aug. 1 surgery on a fractured arm.
