Cunningham worked out for the Lions on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Cunningham was originally released by the Jaguars on Aug. 11. Tuesday's workout is important for the 29-year-old because it means he's clear of the hamstring injury that plagued him early in training camp. Detroit already has four healthy running backs on its active roster, but Cunningham could find a spot on the practice squad if he impresses the team Tuesday.

Benny Cunningham: Released by Jacksonville
Cunningham (hamstring) was released by the Jaguars with an injury settlement Sunday, Hays Carlyon of 1010 AM WJXL reports.
Cunningham was thought to be absent from Thursday's preseason opener due to his veteran status, but he appears to have been dealing with a hamstring injury. The 29-year-old seemed to have a decent chance of cracking the Jaguars' 53-man roster as a third-down back, but he'll have to latch on elsewhere once healthy.

Jaguars' Benny Cunningham: Looking good for roster spot
Cunningham's pass-catching skill gives him a good chance to make the 53-man roster in Jacksonville, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Cunningham primarily has served as a special teams player and third-down back throughout his career, handling 191 carries and 147 targets. He was barely used last season in Chicago, but he still has an area of expertise that differentiates him from the other running backs on Jacksonville's roster. Alfred Blue has 673 career carries and just 69 receptions, while rookie fifth-round pick Ryquell Armstead (hamstring) caught 29 passes for 175 yards (6.0 average) in four seasons at Temple. It appears the Jaguars will use either Cunningham or starter Leonard Fournette on passing downs.

Jaguars' Benny Cunningham: Moves on to Jaguars
The Jaguars signed Cunningham to a contract Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
In the first year under the direction of coach Matt Nagy, Cunningham's touch count in Chicago decreased from 29 in 2017 to 12 last season. The presence of Jordan Howard (58 percent of the offensive snaps) and Tarik Cohen (46 percent) limited Cunningham's usage as the latter managed just 6.5 percent of those snaps. With the move to Jacksonville, Cunningham currently is no better than third on the RB depth chart behind Leonard Fournette and recent signee Alfred Blue. Cunningham may well be competing with 2018 seventh-rounder Dave Williams and veteran Thomas Rawls for one roster spot, assuming the Jaguars don't make another addition at the position in free agency or the draft.

Benny Cunningham: Checking out Jacksonville
Cunningham will visit the Jaguars this week, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports.
Cunningham played 212 snaps on offense and 478 on special teams in 29 games for Chicago over the past two seasons, though he did get some work on passing downs in 2017 (20 receptions). Jacksonville represents the best-case scenario for his next landing spot, as the team has minimal backfield depth behind Leonard Fournette. With Carlos Hyde joining the Chiefs and both T.J. Yeldon and Corey Grant (foot) still unsigned, the Jaguars are badly in need of a No. 2 running back -- preferably one that could replace Fournette in passing situations.

Bears' Benny Cunningham: Set to hit free agency
Cunningham rushed six times for 13 yards in Chicago's Week 17 win over Minnesota to conclude the season with 11 carries for 20 yards along with one reception for nine yards.
Cunningham's biggest benefit to the Bears was his ability to play special teams, and he's been mostly an afterthought in the offense in his two years with the team. Going into his sixth season, he'll be an unrestricted free agent, and he'll likely have a role as a backup, though it's unlikely he'll be a big fantasy factor.

The touch was Cunningham's first since Week 6. He's battled an ankle injury in the interim, but the lack of action is most certainly primarily due to Jordan Howard's and, to a lesser extent, Tarik Cohen's prominent roles in the run game. Cunningham hasn't had more than three carries in a game this season and, even if something were to change Sunday, the 49ers and their top-10 run defense are unlikely to give up much to the veteran back.
