Anthony Zettel: Retires from football
Zettel announced his retirement from football Friday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Zettel signed with the 49ers in late July but will hang up his cleats after going through the early portion of training camp. The 29-year-old appeared in 50 games across five seasons and totaled 76 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

49ers' Anthony Zettel: Signs with San Fran
Zettel agreed Wednesday with the 49ers on a one-year contract, Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
San Francisco will bring in Zettel to shore up its depth on the defensive line with multiple players in the position group battling injuries early in camp. Zettel will be a long shot to make the 49ers' roster coming out of the preseason.

Vikings' Anthony Zettel: Joining Minnesota
Zettel agreed to terms Wednesday on a contract with the Vikings, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Zettel appeared in four games with the Bengals and one game with the 49ers last season, notching six tackles (three solo). The 27-year-old now stands to spend the summer competing for a depth role along the Vikings' defensive line.

Lions' Anthony Zettel: Totals 6.5 sacks in second season
Zettel tallied 43 tackles, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 16 games in 2017.
Zettel took a step forward in his second season, ultimately grading out as Pro Football Focus' 11th ranked 4-3 defensive end against the run. The 2016 sixth-rounder also proved to be a serviceable pass rusher opposite Pro Bowler Ezekiel Ansah and, while he didn't come close to Ansah's 12 sacks, Zettel nonetheless led the Lions with 31 quarterback hurries. He isn't quite in the IDP conversation yet, but he's still under contract with Detroit for two more seasons and should only continue to develop.

If Ansah's playing time remains curtailed against the Ravens in Week 13, expect Zettel to have a good shot at another high-caliber performance.

Zettel leads the Lions with five sacks this season but is only averaging 2.9 tackles per game.
