In what could go down as one of the biggest cut day surprises of 2016, the Baltimore Ravens have decided to release running back Justin Forsett.
The move means that Terrance West will likely be the Ravens' workhorse going into the 2016 season. Going into training camp, West was viewed as a possible fourth-string back -- behind Forsett, Javorius (Buck) Allen and Lorenzo Taliaferro -- but he had such a good preseason that he beat everyone out and one the job.
West's most impressive preseason performance came in the Ravens' Week 3 dress rehearsal against the Lions. During Baltimore's 30-9 win, West carried the ball seven times for 43 yards, an average of 6.1 yards per carry.
The 25-year-old West, who was drafted by the Browns in 2014, only played in six games for the Ravens last season, his first with the team. For the year, he carried the ball 46 times for 180 yards.
Behind West on the depth chart, the Ravens have Allen, who finished second on the team in rushing in 2015.
As for Forsett being released, although the move was a surprise, it wasn't exactly a shock. The three knocks on Forsett is that he's an aging running back with a big contract who's coming off an injury.
The Ravens wills save $2.3 million in cap money with the release of the 30-year-old, who only played in 10 games last season after suffering an elbow injury.
Forsett's career in Baltimore will end after just two seasons. The running back signed with the Ravens before the 2014 season and went on to lead the team in rushing in both 2014 and 2015. Whenever Forsett ends up signing with a new team, it will mark the sixth time in his NFL career that he's made a move.
Before signing with the Ravens, the running back spent time with the Jaguars, Texans, Seahawks and Colts.
