Yankees' DJ LeMahieu: Tracking toward May 28 return

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday in an interview with Jomboy Media's "Talkin' Yanks" podcast that he expects LeMahieu (foot) to be activated from the 10-day injured list on May 28.

LeMahieu went 2-for-3 with three walks in six plate appearances during his two rehab games with Double-A Somerset following the resumption of his rehab assignment and is slated to be transferred to High-A Hudson Valley to continue rehabbing. Boone also reiterated that LeMahieu will be the team's primary third baseman when he returns from the 10-day injured list, though the plan is to mix in more off days for him initially since he's been on the shelf all season with a non-displaced fracture of his right foot.

  • Tristan Gray 3B | MIA

Marlins' Tristan Gray: Expected to be sent down

The Marlins will option Gray to Triple-A Jacksonville prior to Tuesday's game versus the Brewers, Isaac Azout of SBNation.com reports.

He will clear out to make room for Tim Anderson's (back) return from the injured list. Gray was up with the big club for about a week but made just one start. He'll go back to seeing regular reps with Jacksonville.

  • Brett Baty 3B | NYM

Mets' Brett Baty: Starting spot in jeopardy

Baty went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Monday's loss to the Guardians, and he's at risk of losing his starting job at third base to Mark Vientos, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Since a two-homer game May 3, Baty is slashing an anemic .125/.186/.150 with a 43.2 percent strikeout rate. Vientos has mainly been used as a short-side platoon option since his most recent promotion, but he's gone 4-for-14 with two doubles in four games. Baty hasn't let his struggles impact his defense, and that might be the only thing keeping him in the starting nine at the moment. With the Mets scrambling to find offense, though, they might decide they can live with Vientos' inferior glove at the hot corner if he can produce at the plate.

  • Taylor Walls 3B | TB

Rays' Taylor Walls: Starting rehab assignment

Walls (hip) was assigned to the Florida Complex League Rays on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment.

Walls had to be shut down for a while after developing inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip, but he's progressed to the point that he's ready to try things out in a game setting. The infielder will eventually move up to a higher affiliate, but he figures to be looking at a lengthy rehab assignment since he'll basically be going through spring training. Walls is probably looking at a utility infielder role with the Rays when he returns.

  • Eugenio Suarez 3B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Back in lineup

Suarez went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Dodgers.

Suarez was back in the starting lineup after getting his first day off of the season Sunday. His seventh-inning double snapped an 0-for-12 run. Suarez, who is hitting .155 with a .478 OPS during May, has yet to find a groove for his new club. For the season, he's slashing .212/.279/.324 through 47 games.

  • Rafael Devers 3B | BOS

Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Extends home-run streak

Devers went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Monday's win over the Rays.

Devers' two-run blast in the fourth inning was his 10th of the year, and he's gone deep in six straight games, though he has only seven total hits during that span. The star third baseman is slashing .284/.380/.567 with 23 RBI and 20 extra-base hits through 37 games. In 18 games this month, Devers has knocked 13 extra-base hits while going 20-for-70 (.286).

  • Joseph Ortiz 3B | MIL

Brewers' Joey Ortiz: X-rays come back negative

X-rays on Ortiz's right foot came back negative following Monday's game against Miami, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.

Ortiz appeared to be in good spirits following Monday's loss, and he stated that his foot was feeling good, per Leckie. The Brewers will re-evaluate Ortiz on Tuesday morning to determine his availability moving forward.

  • Joseph Ortiz 3B | MIL

Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Headed for X-rays

Ortiz is getting X-rays on his right foot after being hit by a pitch in the fourth inning Monday against the Marlins, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Ortiz was able to finish out the game, but it was still bothering him in the clubhouse after the loss, and skipper Pat Murphy noted that the injury may be more serious than initially thought, per Paige Leckie of MLB.com. Andruw Monasterio put together a multi-hit evening and could be in line for more looks at the hot corner if Ortiz requires a trip to the injured list. Oliver Dunn is another option at third base, though it would require Milwaukee to elevate him from Triple-A Nashville.

  • Anthony Rendon 3B | LAA

    Angels' Anthony Rendon: Feeling better

Rendon (hamstring) has progressed to walking on an incline on the treadmill, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Rendon is taking baby steps in his recovery from a left hamstring strain but said Monday that he's feeling a bit better. There remains no timetable for his return and he's not eligible for activation for another month after being shifted to the 60-day injured list earlier this month.

  • DJ LeMahieu 3B | NYY

Yankees' DJ LeMahieu: Will be primary third baseman

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that LeMahieu (foot) will be the team's primary third baseman when he returns, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

LeMahieu will be eased into everyday duty, though, after missing so much time with a right foot injury. The veteran infielder is a couple games into the resumption of his rehab assignment and isn't expected to be activated for at least another week or so. Once LeMahieu returns, Oswaldo Cabrera and Jon Berti will fill utility roles.
