Patriots' Rhamondre Stevenson: Close to full strength

Stevenson (ankle) recently said he's "feeling great" and would be able to play in a game if the Patriots had one coming up, Nicole Yang of The Boston Globe reports.
Stevenson has been going to physical therapy four or five times per week since missing the final five games of 2023 with a high-ankle injury. It sounds like he'll be ready for the start of the offseason program, heading into the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. Stevenson said he plans to speak to new coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt about his desire to handle a clear lead role in the backfield, after rotating with Damien Harris in 2022 and Ezekiel Elliott in 2023. Elliott is headed for unrestricted free agency this offseason, leaving Stevenson and 2022 sixth-round pick Kevin Harris as the only RBs from the 2023 roster under contract for 2024.

With the Patriots eliminated from playoff contention, Stevenson -- who last played in Week 13 -- will be shut down for the final two games of the season as he continues his recovery from a right high-ankle sprain. Ezekiel Elliott is slated to lead the team's backfield in Weeks 17 and 18, with Kevin Harris serving as his top understudy and JaMycal Hasty on hand in reserve. Initial X-rays on Stevenson's right ankle were negative and the belief is that the running back's MRI will reveal a sprain, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.
The results of Stevenson's MRI thus loom large, but with the Patriots on a short week and playing again Thursday against the Steelers, the running back's Week 14 status is cloudy. If Stevenson is unavailable versus Pittsburgh, added backfield touches will be on tap for Ezekiel Elliott, with Ty Montgomery and JaMycal Hasty available in reserve.
Stevenson, who injured his right ankle during Sunday's game against the Chargers, won't return to the contest.
Before being forced out of the game, Stevenson had carried nine times for 39 yards and caught one pass for zero yards. In his absence, Ezekiel Elliott will lead the Patriots' Week 13 rushing attack. The best thing for Stevenson the past two weeks has been his involvement in the passing game with 11 catches for 75 yards on 12 targets against the Raiders and Bills, and I hope that continues all season. He faced the Dolphins in Week 2 at home and had 15 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 10 yards on three targets. Miami has allowed a running back to score a touchdown in three of the past four games, and hopefully Stevenson can find the end zone instead of Ezekiel Elliott. But the main thing I like about Stevenson this week is the Patriots will likely be chasing points, meaning Stevenson should get a healthy amount of receptions.
