Player Outlook
Whatever momentum Wright had after scoring three times in his final four games of 2022 was wiped out when the Lions drafted Sam LaPorta in April. Now Wright finds himself in a battle for playing time in an offense where he was already minimized as a target-getter, even after getting an opportunity to play a lot in the second half of last season. If he ends up carving out a nice role, Fantasy managers should expect to find him on the waiver wire. He shouldn't get drafted.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Catches two passes

Wright caught both of his targets for 17 yards during Thursday's 21-20 win over Kansas City. Wright is the incumbent starter, but he logged only about 40 percent of the snaps while second-round draft pick Sam LaPorta commanded over 80. Already a touchdown-dependent fantasy option, Wright has little fantasy utility as a distant No. 2 tight end.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Signs contract with Detroit

Wright, who had been an exclusive rights free agent, signed with the Lions on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The same applies to Shane Zylstra, ensuring that the duo will reprise their roles in a Detroit tight end corps that also includes 2022 fifth-rounder James Mitchell and Derrick Deese. This past season, Wright logged a line of 18-216-4 on 24 targets over the course of 17 games. Added pass-catching opportunities could be in store for Wright in 2023, but there's still a solid chance that the Lions add TE depth in the coming weeks and months, quite possibly in the upcoming NFL Draft.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Tendered by Detroit

Wright was tendered by the Lions on Monday, paving the way for him to return to Detroit in 2023, Kyel Meinke of MLive.com reports. Wright was one of five exclusive-rights free agents tendered by the Lions. The tight end had 18 catches for 216 yards and four touchdowns in 2022.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: No receptions in win

Wright played 34 of the Lions' 60 snaps on offense and failed to reel in his lone target in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Packers. After Shane Zylstra scored three times in a Week 16 loss to the Panthers, Wright came through with two touchdowns in a Week 17 win over the Bears, but both tight ends came up empty in the season finale. While combining to play 56 snaps Week 18, Wright and Zylstra went without a catch, as third-stringer James Mitchell's seven-yard reception amounted to the only production from the position group. Even though his opportunities picked up following the trade of T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota in November, Wright finished the 2022 campaign with an unremarkable 18-216-4 receiving line on 24 targets over his 16 appearances. Wright is an exclusive-rights free agent this offseason and will most likely be retained, but expect the Lions to at least explore outside options at tight end this offseason rather than promising the 24-year-old the starting gig heading into 2023.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Two scores against Chicago

Wright caught three of four targets for 13 yards with two touchdowns during Sunday's 41-10 win over the Bears. Wright continues to make key plays for Detroit, but he is still not seeing enough volume to be worthy of fantasy consideration. The Notre Dame product will be a touchdown-dependent fantasy play in Week 18 against Green Bay.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: One target against Panthers

Wright secured his only target for 11 yards during Saturday's loss to Carolina. On the heels of his game-winning, 51-yard touchdown scamper in Week 15, Wright saw no increase in his pass-catching role a week later. Instead, backup tight end Shane Zylstra stole the show with a trio of touchdown catches while finishing with six targets to Wright's one. All Lions tight ends will remain highly questionable fantasy plays when Detroit takes on Chicago in Week 17.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Held without a catch

Wright saw one target in the passing game but did not catch a pass during Sunday's win over Minnesota. Wright again logged about half of the offensive snaps, but the tight end failed to do much in the box score despite the Lions' offense again firing on all cylinders for the second straight week. He'll remain a fantasy afterthought in Week 15 against the Jets.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Minimal production on three targets

Wright caught two of three targets for six yards during Thursday's 28-25 loss to the Bills. Detroit is still not running much of its passing game through the tight ends in the wake of T.J. Hockenson's trade to Minnesota. Without much of an athletic profile to fall back on, Wright will be remain a zero-floor, low-upside fantasy option Week 13 against Jacksonville.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Totals 20 yards

Wright caught two of two targets for 20 yards during Sunday's 31-18 win over the Giants. Wright again logged the vast majority of snaps at tight end while James Mitchell hovered around 20 percent. However, it still doesn't look like the Lions are wanting to involve him in the passing game like they did with T.J. Hockenson. Next up for Wright is a tough Week 12 matchup against Matt Milano and the Bills.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Hauls in TD against Chicago

Wright caught his only target for a two-yard touchdown in Sunday's 31-30 win over the Bears. The Lions' tight ends didn't get many looks from Jared Goff as a group, but Wright made his one target count by scoring his first TD of the season in the second quarter. The second-year player will continue to compete with rookie James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra for snaps and touches in Week 11 against the Giants.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Small receiving role sans Hockenson

Wright failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 15-9 win over the Packers. After rising to the top of the depth chart in the wake of T.J. Hockenson's trade to Minnesota, Wright was barely used in the passing game despite logging 81 percent of the offensive snaps. Meanwhile, rookie fifth-round pick James Mitchell caught both of his targets for eight yards and a touchdown while third-string Shane Zylstra caught his lone target for a one-yard touchdown. Wright could luck into his own scoring opportunities a couple of times as the rest of the season unfolds, but it seems that the Lions may be looking to replace Hockenson with a committee approach if this game was any indication.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Playing Sunday

Wright (concussion protocol) is listed as active Sunday versus the Packers. Wright entered the protocol for head injuries following last Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, but progressing from no activity to Wednesday to a full practice Friday signaled that the tight end was on the right track to play Week 9. Indeed, that has come to pass, and he now is poised to take on a portion of the snaps vacated by T.J. Hockenson following the latter's move to the Vikings ahead of the trade deadline. Wright, James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra are the Lions available at the position Sunday.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Status in question for Sunday

Wright (concussion protocol) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus the Packers, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports. Wright increased his activity from none Wednesday to some Thursday before logging a full practice to end Week 9 prep. Still, he remains in the protocol for head injuries, likely only needing to meet with an independent neurologist in order to gain clearance to suit up. Whether or not that comes to pass remains to be seen, but if Wright is active Sunday, he'll team with rookie fifth-rounder James Mitchell at tight end for the Lions.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Making progress

Wright (concussion protocol) was limited at Thursday's practice. Wright entered the protocol for head injuries in the wake of a Week 8 loss to the Dolphins, but after sitting out Wednesday he made his first notable progress with some on-field activity one day later. Still, he must complete all five phases of the protocol to gain clearance to play, so continuing to work Friday (or even getting back to a full practice) would put him in a fair spot ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. With T.J. Hockenson getting traded to the Vikings earlier this week, Wright, when active, likely will serve as the Lions' No. 1 tight end for the rest of the season.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: No practice Wednesday

Wright (concussion protocol) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice. Wright exited this past Sunday's loss to the Dolphins late in the contest to be evaluated for a concussion, and the first practice report of Week 9 revealed that he's indeed in the NFL's protocol for head injuries. It's unclear if he actually has a concussion, but he nonetheless must clear the five steps necessary to be cleared for game action. Whether or not that happens before Sunday's contest against the Packers remains to be seen, but with T.J. Hockenson shipped off to Minnesota on Tuesday, Wright stands to benefit in terms of snaps and targets once he's available. In seven games this season, Wright has hauled in all six targets for 88 yards.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Larger role likely awaits

Wright (head) is expected to take on a more prominent role for the Lions over the rest of the season after Detroit traded top tight end T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota on Tuesday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports. With Hockenson's departure, the Lions are left with Wright and James Mitchell as their sole options at tight end on the current 53-man roster, though at least one of Garrett Griffin and Shane Zylstra are expected to be elevated from the practice squad ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. Before he can take claim to Hockenson's vacated snaps, Wright must first clear the concussion protocol after he exited early in the Lions' Week 8 loss to the Dolphins. Over his 17 career games, Wright has tallied 18 receptions for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 23 targets.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Will not return

Wight is being evaluated for a concussion and will not return Sunday against the Dolphins. Wright recorded one catch for six yards before having to exit the game. It's bad news for the 23-year-old, who is coming off a career-best effort last Sunday against the Cowboys. Rookie tight end James Mitchell will now potentially see extra opportunity behind T.J. Hockenson for the remainder of the game.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Relatively big day as pass catcher

Wright caught four of four targets for 57 yards during Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Cowboys. Wright had only caught one pass this year before setting new career highs in receptions and receiving yardage in this one -- even outpacing top tight end T.J. Hockenson in receiving yardage along the way. While it's unlikely that this is the sudden start of a heightened receiving role for the blocking specialist, Wright could be needed to catch a few passes over the next couple of weeks as the Lions' receiving corps returns to full health.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Scores on trick play

Wright caught two of two targets for 51 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 37-30 win over Green Bay. Wright returned from a week off in the COVID-19 protocols and again logged over 70 percent of the offensive snaps while serving as the Lions' top tight end in the absence of T.J. Hockenson (finger). While most of Wright's production came on a flea flicker in the third quarter when the tight end snuck behind the defense for a 36-yard touchdown, the Notre Dame product is continuing to show that he can be a little more than just a blocker at the pro level. In total, he finishes the 2021 campaign with 12 catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 17 targets despite not seeing regular action until the second half of the year. Considering he will now be an exclusive-rights free agent, Wright is a strong candidate to return to Detroit in 2022 as a depth option behind Hockenson.

  • Lions' Brock Wright: Limited practice Wednesday

Wright was a limited participant in practice Wednesday due to a groin injury. The tight end was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday after his positive test for the virus forced to miss the Lions' Week 17 loss to the Seahawks. Wright wasn't known to be dealing with an injury prior to landing on the list, but his ability to practice Wednesday in any capacity bodes well for his chances to play Sunday against the Packers.
