Shane Ray: Released with injury settlement
The Bills released Ray (hamstring) off injured reserve with an injury settlement Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Ray landed on injured reserve Monday after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday's preseason contest against Pittsburgh. Since he and Buffalo agreed upon an injury settlement, he's free to sign with another NFL team immediately. Ray's hamstring issue was originally described as minor, but it's uncertain if that's still the case.

Bills' Shane Ray: Placed on injured reserve
The Bills placed Ray (hamstring) on injured reserve Monday.
Ray suffered the hamstring injury in Saturday's preseason contest against the Steelers. According to Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site, the 30-year-old's injury was believed to be of the day-to-day variety, so his move to injured reserve comes as a bit of surprise. The 2015 first-round pick had been competing for a roster spot with the hope of making his first NFL appearance since 2018.

Bills' Shane Ray: Earns another NFL opportunity
Ray signed a contract with the Bills on Saturday, Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Ray was a first-round selection of the Broncos in 2015 and spent four years on the team before signing with and being released by the Ravens ahead of the 2019 season. The 29-year-old has spent the last two years with Toronto of the CFL, most recently appearing in 13 games and collecting six sacks and two forced fumbles during the 2022 season. He'll likely be competing for a depth spot on Buffalo's defense.

Ray was released by the Ravens on Friday.
Ray was considered on the 53-man roster bubble, but was ultimately unable to earn a spot. He spent his first four seasons in Denver, accumulating 94 tackles (64 solo) and 14 sacks in the process. Still only 26 years old, he should not have to look to hard for a new destination.

Ray was originally placed on the NFI list after failing the team's conditioning test. However, he has since shown improved health and returned to practice Friday. He currently projects as Tim William's backup at right outside linebacker.

Ray had numerous free-agent visits -- including the Raiders and Seahawks -- but ends up joining the Ravens after Denver elected not to pick up his fifth-year option for 2019. The 2015 first-round pick had only one sack in each of the past two seasons, as he was limited to 19 games with multiple injuries. Ray figures to compete with Tim Williams, Tyus Bowser, Jaylon Ferguson and Pernell McPhee for reps at outside linebacker, where only Matt Judon is locked into a key role for the Ravens.

Ray has already visited the Raiders and Colts -- who opted to sign Justin Houston instead -- this offseason in his quest to find a new home. Despite Ray's status as a first-round pick in 2015, the Missouri product has had a combination of injuries that have given him trouble finding consistency. Ray has a chance to find a spot in Seattle, where the depth at defensive end is fairly shallow.

Ray recently visited with the Raiders, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Stephen Holder of The Athletic relays that the free-agent pass rusher visited Indianapolis a few weeks ago -- presumably before the Colts signed Justin Houston to fill their void on the edge. Ray is a 2015 first-round pick with an eight-sack season (in 2016) to his name, but a combination of injuries and superior talent on the Denver roster limited him to 19 appearances (seven starts) and two sacks the past two seasons. He might have a shot at a starting job in Oakland, where the depth chart at defensive end is barren.
