Player Outlook
Thomas will again be the starting tight end for the Commanders to open the season, but he has minimal Fantasy value in that role. Thomas is not worth drafting in the majority of Fantasy leagues. He was a breakout tight end in 2020 when he averaged 11.0 PPR points per game. But injuries and inconsistent play have been a problem the past two seasons, and he only averaged 5.5 PPR points per game in 2022. We'll see how he does this year with new quarterback Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett, but if Thomas starts off the season playing well, just add him off the waiver wire. In tight-end premium leagues, you can take a late-round flier on Thomas in deeper formats.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Week 5 Waiver Priority List

Thomas returned from his one-game absence with a concussion in Week 3 to modest totals at Philadelphia in Week 4 with three catches for 41 yards on three targets. He's now scored at least 7.3 PPR points in every game he's played, and Sam Howell is leaning on his tight ends. In deeper leagues, Thomas can be considered a low-end starter heading into Week 5 against Chicago, and he also faces the Falcons in Week 6 and the Giants in Week 7, which are favorable matchups. Thomas is worth adding for 1 percent of your FAB.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Cleared to play

Thomas (concussion) will be available to play Sunday against the Eagles, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports. After missing a week of practice and one game, Thomas returned to limited practice participation Wednesday before upgrading to full activity Thursday. He now heads into Sunday without an injury designation, pushing fellow Washington tight ends Cole Turner and John Bates back to complementary roles. Thomas surprisingly had a team-high 11 targets through his six quarters of play this season before exiting early with the concussion Week 2, though in the long run, he probably won't get as many looks as wideouts Terry McLaurin or Jahan Dotson. Challenging slot man Curtis Samuel to be third on the team in targets is a more reasonable goal for the 32-year-old tight end.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Gets back to full participation

Thomas (concussion) practiced fully Thursday. It's unclear if Thomas has made his way through the five phases of the concussion protocol, but he told Sam Fortier of The Washington Post after Wednesday's limited session that he expects to return to action Sunday at Philadelphia. The Commanders may clear up Thomas' status for Week 4 upon the release of Friday's injury report, but he appears on pace to make his first appearance since Week 2 this weekend.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Expects to play this week

Thomas (concussion) was a limited practice participant Wednesday and said afterward that he expects to play in Sunday's game against Philadelphia, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports. Thomas missed last Sunday's 37-3 loss to Buffalo, leaving Cole Turner and John Bates in a timeshare at tight end. Bates should still have a role as a blocker if Thomas is back for Week 4, while Turner's usefulness would be minimized with the return of a more experienced receiving-minded tight end. Thomas drew 11 targets through the first six quarters of play this season before suffering a concussion Week 2.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Won't play this week

Thomas (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Buffalo, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports. Thomas didn't practice this week after an early exit from last Sunday's 35-33 win over Denver. He's seen 11 targets in six quarters of action this season, but there's no guarantee of similar involvement for the backup tight ends with both John Bates and Cole Turner likely to play a lot.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Officially DNP on Thursday

Thomas (concussion) officially didn't practice Thursday. This comes as no surprise after Thomas wasn't seen during the media-access portion of the session. He'll thus have just one more chance to show that he's progressing through the concussion protocol, which he's currently in due to a helmet-to-helmet hit that he took from Broncos safety Kareem Jackson this past Sunday. If Thomas is unable to suit up Week 3 against the Bills, John Bates and Cole Turner will be the Commanders' primary tight ends this Sunday.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Not seen at practice Thursday

Thomas (concussion) wasn't spotted during the open part of Thursday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. Assuming he goes down as a non-participant for a second consecutive session, Thomas seemingly doesn't have enough time to make his way through the concussion protocol and be able to suit up Sunday against the Bills. If that comes to pass, the Commanders will turn to John Bates and Cole Turner at tight end for as long as Thomas is sidelined.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Not returning Sunday

Thomas (concussion) won't return to Sunday's game in Denver. Thomas was on the receiving end of a helmet-to-helmet hit from Broncos safety Kareem Jackson during his touchdown catch late in the second quarter. With the team ruling him out, Thomas will finish Week 2 with two catches (on three targets) for 22 yards and one touchdown. He'll now be subject to the protocol for head injuries, which will determine whether or not he'll be available next Sunday against the Bills. John Bates and Cole Turner are the next players up at TE for the Commanders.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Evaluated for concussion

Thomas is being evaluated for a concussion during Sunday's game against the Broncos. Prior to his exit from the contest, Thomas caught two of his three targets for 22 yards and a TD. John Bates and Cole Turner are next up for the Commanders' TE snaps in Thomas' absence.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Week 2 Waiver Priority List

Despite having Jahan Dotson, Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel, it was Thomas who led the Commanders in targets in Week 1 against Arizona. Now, we know the Cardinals have been awful against tight ends for multiple seasons, so Thomas took advantage of a good matchup. But he might be someone Sam Howell leans on moving forward, so keep that in mind. He only finished with four catches for 43 yards, but in deeper leagues, Thomas is worth adding for 1 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Week 2 Streamers (TE Preview)

We can't just ignore the fact that over a fourth of Sam Howell's pass attempts went to Thomas in Week 1. Both Thomas and Ertz are veterans who were understandably undrafted, but if their Week 1 usage carries over to Week 2 they will look more like starters than waiver wire adds.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Busy in season debut

Thomas caught four of his team-high eight targets for 43 yards in Sunday's 20-16 win over Arizona. In addition to his surprising team lead in targets, the 32-year-old tight end played 82 percent of snaps on offense, not far behind WRs Terry McLaurin (89 percent) and Jahan Dotson (87 percent). The Commanders undoubtedly want more of the targets going to those two, and the Cardinals were a particularly good matchup for the tight end, but Thomas could still average a handful of looks per week or even slightly more if he's able to stay on the field. A trip to Denver in Week 2 marks the start of what could be a stretch of tough matchups however, as the Commanders subsequently face the Bills in Week 3 and the Eagles in Week 4.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Good to go for opener

Thomas (calf) wasn't listed Wednesday on the Commanders' Week 1 injury report. Thomas' absence from the injury report confirms that he's completed his recovery from the calf strain that kept him out of practice and preseason games for nearly all of August. He'll likely reclaim his role as the team's top receiving tight end this Sunday against the Cardinals, though he could cede a few routes and snaps to Cole Turner as well as blocking tight end John Bates.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Making progress with calf

Thomas (calf) is working his way back into practice and could have a major role under new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Cole Turner had a busy preseason filling in with the first-team offense, but Thomas is still expected to get most of those snaps/targets once the games count. It sounds like the 32-year-old is on track for Week 1 against Arizona despite missing most of training camp and all three preseason games. While probably only the fourth or fifth option in Washington's passing game when everyone is healthy, Thomas could bump up a spot in the pecking order if he's cleared to play Week 1 and WR Terry McLaurin (toe) isn't.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Doing individual work

Thomas (calf) will do individual work Thursday, with coach Ron Rivera noting that the tight end has "progressed very well," Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Thomas hasn't practiced with teammates since at least Aug. 3 and seems likely to miss a third straight preseason game when the Commanders host the Bengals on Saturday. Second-year pro Cole Turner has been filling in as the top tight end for the first-team offense, catching six passes for 54 yards through two preseason games, including five connections with starting QB Sam Howell.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Works with trainers on side field

Thomas (calf) did some jogging and worked on a side field with trainers at practice Saturday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Thomas has been bothered by a calf strain since early August and missed Washington's first preseason game last week. It seems likely that he'll sit out Monday's contest against Baltimore as well, though that hasn't yet been confirmed. Given his ability to work on a side field Saturday, there remains hope that Thomas can be ready for the start of the regular season.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Still not practicing

Thomas (calf) won't practice Sunday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. Thomas has missed over a week of training camp now, including Washington's preseason opener Friday, due to a calf injury. The severity of the issue remains unclear, but the Commanders did add Kaden Smith to their tight end group Sunday for extra depth, which suggests Thomas isn't on the verge of suiting up any time soon.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Bothered by calf strain

Thomas missed Friday's practice due to a calf strain, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. The Commanders apparently don't consider the injury serious, as coach Ron Rivera used the phrase "an abundance of caution" to explain why Thomas was held out of practice. The 32-year-old tight end doesn't have the stiffest competition in Washington's TE room and seems to be liked by the coaching staff, but his status with the team still feels a bit shaky given that he struggled last season and is now due a non-guaranteed $6.28 million base salary in 2023. The biggest thing working in Thomas' favor right now might be the reality that the Commanders don't have another experienced pass catcher at his position, nor do they have any TEs drafted before the fourth round. The strongest candidate to poach targets from Thomas would probably be 2022 fifth-round pick Cole Turner, who caught two passes on 245 offensive snaps last year.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Held to 16 yards in finale

Thomas caught two of three targets for 16 yards in Sunday's 26-6 win over Dallas. Thomas finishes his age-31 season with one touchdown in 14 games, having caught 39 of 61 targets for 323 yards (8.3 YPR, 5.3 YPT). He came back from last year's ACL tear for Week 1 and then returned from a calf injury after missing three games in October, mostly handling a familiar role as Washington's receiving threat at tight end. Thomas wasn't much of one in 2022, of course, and he's scheduled for a non-guaranteed $6.275 million base salary in 2023, the second season of his three-year extension, per OverTheCap.

  • Commanders' Logan Thomas: Week 18 Streamers (TE Preview)

Thomas has seen a 24% target share in the Commanders past two games and we'd expect a pass-heavy script against a Cowboys team that should be playing its starters.
