  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: TOI drying up

Newhook had two penalty minutes over 5:41 of ice time in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Senators. Newhook was in the box for interference when Ottawa scored its first goal then made a poor read that led to the Sens' second goal, which may explain the season-low TOI. The second-year forward's ice time has diminished of late. Newhook's now skating on the fourth line, which collectively played just two shifts in the third period, and been given less than 10 minutes in three of the last four games.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Faceoff win leads to assist

Newhook had an assist and one shot on goal over 9:34 of ice time in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over the Coyotes. Newhook won just two of eight faceoffs, but his defensive-zone win early in the first period led to Denis Malgin's score. The 22-year-old center was originally thought to be a replacement on the second line for the departed Nazem Kadri, but things haven't worked out that way. Newhook's spent a good portion of the season in a bottom-six role and currently centers the fourth line. He has a goal and six assists over his last nine games.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Produces helper in loss

Newhook notched an assist and two PIM in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Kings. Newhook has four helpers through five games in March, but he's gone six contests without a goal. Consistent offense could be difficult to find as long as he remains in a bottom-six role -- he centered the fourth line Thursday. The 22-year-old is up to 26 points, 93 shots on net, 51 hits, 18 PIM and a plus-5 rating through 63 outings.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Back to bottom six

Newhook had one shot on goal, one hit and one blocked shot over a season-low 8:32 of ice time in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Seattle. Newhook had five points over the previous five games leading into Sunday's affair, but head coach Jared Bednar stuck him on the fourth line after the second-year forward filled a top-six role Saturday. He played just five shifts over the final two periods. There did not appear to be an injury involved in the low ice time, but it could be as simple as Newhook running afoul of the coach, something that's happened before this season.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Remains in top six

Newhook had two assists, one on the power play, and two shots on goal over 12:26 of ice time in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Stars. Newhook, who has five points in the last five games, remained in a top-six role, helping to fill a void created by Valeri Nichushkin's absence due to illness. He patiently circled the net and assisted on Samuel Girard's first-period goal, then set up Evan Rodrigues' power-play strike in the third. It's unclear if Nichushkin will be available for Sunday's contest against the Kraken, but the suddenly hot Newhook should remain in a top-six role whether Big Val plays or not.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Shifts to second line

Newhook had an assist, one shot on goal, one hit and one blocked shot over 13:28 of ice time in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to New Jersey. Newhook has points in three of the last four contests following a seven-game pointless streak. He moved to the wing on the second line Wednesday with the newly acquired Lars Eller jumping in as the third-line center, Newhook's previous role. Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar told Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now that's he's been pleased with Newhook's game recently and wanted to elevate him. In theory, the 22-year-old forward could see an increase in scoring while skating with J.T. Compher and Mikko Rantanen on the second line. However, Newhook has been inconsistent with 23 points over 59 games this campaign.

He took a pass off the boards and fired it top shelf 8:22 into the game. Newhook now has 13 tallies, 22 points, 85 shots on net, 48 hits and a plus-3 rating through 57 appearances.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Scores birthday goal

Newhook scored a goal on three shots and blocked one shot over 14:25 of ice time in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Blues. Newhook, who turned 22 on Saturday, scored on his birthday for a second straight season. He gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead midway through the first period by burying his own rebound. It was the third goal over the last four games for Newhook, who has seven points over the last eight. The second-year forward is having a streaky season. Along with his scoring binges, Newhook has an eight-game scoreless run and another stretch during which he had one point over 11 contests. The Avs are looking for more consistency from Newhook, who was selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Newhook put the Avalanche up 1-0 at 8:18 of the second period, converting on a loose puck in the Kraken's zone after some extended pressure. This was Newhook's second point in as many games, and he has three goals and two helpers over his last five outings. Injuries up front have pushed him into a third-line center role recently. • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Career-high three points

Newhook scored two goals and added an assist in Saturday's 7-0 rout of the Senators. The 21-year-old had only one assist over his prior 11 games, but Newhook busted out for a career-best performance in a big night for the Avs. The 2019 first-round pick is still trying to find his footing in the NHL and has just nine goals and 16 points through 41 games on the season, but the upside he flashed Saturday still makes him an asset in keeper and dynasty formats.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Gets maintenance day

Newhook's (face) absence from Friday's practice was for maintenance reasons, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar told Kyle Fredrickson of The Denver Gazette. Newhook was struck in the face by the puck during Thursday's game against Chicago, so his absence from Friday's practice was originally somewhat concerning. If it was just maintenance though, he might be an option Saturday versus Ottawa. He has seven goals and 13 points in 40 games this season.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Ends seven-game slump with helper

Newhook registered an assist and two hits in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Canucks. Newhook was bumped down to the fourth line as recently as last Saturday, but he was back in the middle six Thursday. He helped out on a Samuel Girard goal in the second period of this contest, which ended Newhook's seven-game point drought. The 21-year-old forward is up to 13 points, 54 shots on net, 35 hits and a minus-3 rating through 37 contests overall. The Avalanche are still trying to find his best fit for this season, so it's likely he'll continue to move around the lineup.

Newhook had four shots on goal and two hits over 14:13 of ice time in Saturday's 6-2 loss to Toronto. He has seven goals and 12 points in 29 games this season. He entered the contest averaging just 14:42 of ice time, and the 21-year-old will have a hard time making regular offensive contributions unless his role grows.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Helps on lone goal

Newhook had an assist and one hit over 19:53 of ice time in Friday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Rangers. Newhook had a pretty one-touch pass to set up Mikko Rantanen for Colorado's only goal on 42 shots. He spent the game on the top line, skating with Rantanen and the returning Valeri Nichushkin. Since a new rash of injuries cropped up during the Avalanche's recent road trip, Newhook has averaged 20:35 TOI over the last four games, nearly six minutes above his season average. It's ice time he needs to play due to the injuries, but it's also time earned with an uptick in production. The second-year forward has seven points over the last 11 contests since his one-on-one with head coach Jared Bednar in mid-November.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Nets two goals Monday

Newhook scored two goals, including one with the man advantage, in Colorado's 5-3 loss to Philadelphia on Monday. While Newhook has been limited to six goals and nine points through 23 games this season, he did average 2:43 of power-play ice time from Nov. 21-Dec. 3, and logged 6:32 on Monday. The 21-year-old should have some fantasy value as long as he's getting playing time on the Avalanche's top power-play unit.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Spends minutes on top line

Newhook had two shots on goal and four hits over 20:07 of ice time in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Bruins. The Avalanche spent the last two periods without Artturi Lehkonen (upper body) and used Newhook and Jean-Luc Foudy as replacements on the top line alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. That usage led to a season-high TOI total for Newhook, who also ascended to the top power-play unit for 4:45. If Lehkonen is unable to go Monday in Philadelphia, Newhook is in line for more time with Colorado's most gifted offensive personnel.
