There's so much more to Worthy besides his record-setting 40-yard-dash time at the NFL combine, which is why Fantasy managers figure to reach for him on Draft Day. Worthy led Texas in receiving yards each of the past three years and dominated not only downfield but also made things happen on short passes via screens and slants. Worthy is a good route-runner with great agility, but he's lean and figures to struggle with physicality at the NFL level. Truthfully it's catching passes from Patrick Mahomes that makes him attractive, and while rookie receivers have had a tough time adjusting to Andy Reid's offense in the past, we're just one year removed from Rashee Rice thriving as a rookie. Assume Worthy will make it to the Round 8-9 range in redraft leagues unless preseason reports are glowing. He's worth taking then, just as he's worth selecting late in Round 1 in all rookie-only formats.

  • Chiefs' Xavier Worthy: Returns to practice

Worthy (illness) returned to practice Friday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. It isn't ideal for a rookie to miss spring practices with a hamstring injury and now four days of training camp due to an illness, but he's back on the field Friday and has plenty of time to make an impression before Week 1. Selected 28th overall this spring after running the 40-yard dash in a combine-record 4.21 seconds, Worthy is part of a WR room where Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown are the top veterans. The team also has three early draft picks from prior years -- Kadarius Toney, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore -- but at this point they're all viewed as disappointments and likely are competing for backup roles or special-teams snaps more so than top-three spots at wide receiver. Rice and Justin Watson (foot) are the only returning WRs that got a lot of playing time for the Chiefs last season.

  • Chiefs' Xavier Worthy: Misses practice again

Worthy (illness) missed a third straight practice Wednesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports. Worthy landed in an ideal spot for immediate fantasy value when the Chiefs drafted him with the 28th overall pick in the draft this April, but he hasn't actually had many chances to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes. He missed most of the offseason program with a hamstring injury, and now has been out for a trio of of training-camp practices due to the illness. Worthy still has plenty of time to earn a top-three role at wide receiver, and the competition doesn't look all that tough beyond Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown. Moreover, Justin Watson was carted off the field at Wednesday's practice, leaving Worthy, Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, Mecole Hardman, Nikko Remigio and Justyn Ross as the leading candidates for first-team reps alongside Rice and Brown.

  • Chiefs' Xavier Worthy: Back on practice field

Worthy (hamstring) participated in Wednesday's practice session, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. Worthy appears to have recovered from the left hamstring injury that kept him sidelined throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamp, and though he missed a few plays Wednesday due to a hand issue, he was back on the field and catching passes from Ian Book by the end of the session. Per Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site, the team is currently hosting a "pre-camp" introduction for quarterbacks and rookies, which includes three practices before training camp officially kicks off Sunday. Patrick Mahomes said Tuesday that Worthy won't be eased into action come camp, according to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, so the rookie first-round pick should be competing for notable practice reps before long.

  • Chiefs' Xavier Worthy: Kansas City snatches 28th overall

The Chiefs selected Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 28th overall. The Chiefs traded up from the 32nd pick to secure Worthy, the owner of the fastest combine 40 time on record (4.21 seconds). Worthy (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) and free-agent pickup Marquise Brown are both tiny speedsters who are loath to face much physicality from a defense, so it remains to be seen how well the two coexist in 2024, but in the meantime it's clear that the Chiefs are hammering a speed emphasis this offseason. Despite Worthy's struggles with contact and his history of dropped passes at Texas, he could prove uniquely dangerous with a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes.
