  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Active for Week 1

Smith-Williams (oblique) is active for Sunday's matchup against the Cardinals.

Smith-Williams was considered questionable due to an oblique injury that popped up this week, but the injury isn't enough to sideline him for the season opener. The 2020 seventh-round pick has garnered a rotational role along Washington's defensive line the past two seasons, totaling 53 tackles and 5.5 sacks across 28 appearances. He'll likely take on a starting role at defensive end Sunday with Chase Young (neck) sitting out.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Officially questionable for Week 1

Smith-Williams (oblique) was listed as questionable Friday for Sunday's game versus Arizona.

After recovering from a concussion that forced him out of Washington's preseason finale, it will be a new oblique injury that places Smith-Williams' status for the regular-season opener up in the air. If Smith-Williams is forced to sit out, it will likely create additional pass-rush opportunities for Casey Toohill, K.J. Henry and William Bradley-King.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Ready for 2023

Smith-Williams is healthy and ready to play this season, Scott Abraham reports.

Smith-Williams closed out last season in concussion protocols, but he's been fully cleared and was able to make the team's 53-man roster. This is something he doesn't take for granted, telling Abraham, "It's always a blessing to make a roster, very few spots all over the league." The NC State product also could be looking at a larger workload than usual Week 1 against the Cardinals with Efe Obada (knee) on IR and Chase Young's (neck) status still up in the air.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Set to miss season finale

Smith-Williams (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 18 against Dallas, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Smith-Williams will miss a second straight game to end the 2022 season after sustaining a concussion in Week 16 versus the 49ers. Efe Obada will likely see an increase in usage on the defensive line in his absence Sunday.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Out with concussion

Smith-Williams (concussion) is unavailable to play Sunday versus Cleveland, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Smith-Williams suffered a concussion against the 49ers in Week 16, failing to clear league head injury protocol in time to play this week. In his absence, Shaka Toney and Efe Obada could see slight increases in usage on the defensive line.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Concussion confirmed

    Smith-Williams (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday.

Smith-Williams was evaluated for a head injury during last week's loss to San Francisco and has since been diagnosed with a concussion. If the third-year defensive end doesn't return to practice Thursday, he'll have an uphill battle to be cleared for Sunday's matchup against Cleveland.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Has concussion check Saturday

Smith-Williams was evaluated for a head injury during Saturday's 37-20 loss at San Francisco.

In the wake of the Commanders' Week 14 bye, Smith-Williams was reported to be in the concussion protocol, but he followed an LP/FP/FP practice regiment during Week 15 prep and didn't have a designation ahead of last Sunday's game against the Giants. He proceed to play 61 percent of the defensive snaps in that contest, and he manned his typical role this Saturday until he seemingly aggravated the head injury on his third-quarter sack of Brock Purdy. If he sustained another head injury, Smith-Williams may be in danger of sitting out Washington's next game on Sunday, Jan. 1 versus the Browns.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Could return soon

Smith-Williams remains in concussion protocols, but he's expected to return to practice Wednesday or Thursday, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.

Smith-Williams could technically return to practice in limited fashion, even if he hasn't fully completed all the steps in the league's concussion protocols, so it's unclear how close he is to gaining clearance. If he can, he should suit up Sunday against the Giants.
