Player Outlook
After posting a five-year low with 17.8 touches per game in 2022, Cook was jettisoned by the Vikings in early June then signed by the Jets in mid-August. He'll be 28 years old when the season starts and is coming off a season with career lows in yards per carry (4.4) and explosive run rate (7.2% of his runs went for 12-plus yards). Once a first-round staple, there is now a very real chance Cook takes another step back after averaging 14.0 PPR points per game last year. In New York, he's likely to lead the backfield in touches while Breece Hall continues to recover from his torn ACL, assuming Cook himself is cleared after undergoing shoulder surgery during the offseason. Once Hall returns, Cook figures to slip into the 1B role in the backfield. Draft him in Round 7 at the earliest.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Loses key fumble

Cook (shoulder) rushed nine times for 35 yards, caught one of two targets for 11 yards and lost a fumble in Sunday's 13-8 loss to the Falcons. Cook posted his highest rushing yardage total of the season, but his second-quarter fumble in Jets territory set up the only touchdown of the game on Atlanta's ensuing drive. New York's offense has struggled all season, and Cook's poor play after signing with the Jets as a free agent has contributed to the team's shortcomings.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Ready to play Sunday

Cook (shoulder) is active for Sunday's game against the Falcons. A late addition to the Week 13 injury report after the shoulder issue resulted in him being a limited participant in Friday's practice, Cook ended up taking a questionable tag into Sunday. Head coach Robert Saleh indicated after Friday's practice that Cook would be fine for Sunday's game, and as anticipated, the running back avoided the inactive list. He should operate as the top backup to lead back Breece Hall, though that role hasn't translated to much in the way of production for Cook of late. Over the Jets' five games since the team's Week 7 bye, Cook has taken on just 14 touches (11 carries, three receptions) while accounting for 73 yards from scrimmage and no touchdowns. Because Hall was limited some at practice this week with a hamstring injury of his own, however, it's possible that Cook ends up getting more work than he had in previous weeks.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Expected to be available Sunday

Cook (shoulder) is expected to suit up for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Cook and top back Breece Hall (hamstring) are both listed as questionable for the Week 13 matchup, but the Jets expect to have both players available. In the five games since New York's bye week, Cook has surpassed two carries on only one occasion, though he did match his season-best mark with three targets in the Jets' Week 12 loss to the Dolphins. Cook's availability for Sunday's game will be confirmed when the Jets release their inactive list 90 minutes prior to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Questionable after limited practice

Cook (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. Cook popped up on the injury report after being limited in practice Friday, but coach Robert Saleh said earlier in the day that Cook "should be fine" for Sunday's game. Fellow running backs Breece Hall (hamstring) and Israel Abanikanda (illness) also are questionable, but Hall was a full participant in practice Friday, suggesting that he'll likely suit up and lead New York's backfield as usual. Cook hasn't had more than four touches in a game since Week 5.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Shoulder injury downplayed

Coach Robert Saleh noted Friday that Cook is dealing with a shoulder issue but "should be fine" for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports. Cook wasn't on the Jets' first two Week 13 injury reports, but it appears as though his shoulder may have flared up during or after Thursday's practice. The team's upcoming report will reveal whether Cook and/or Breece Hall (hamstring) head into the weekend with injury designations.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Totals 21 scrimmage yards Friday

Cook rushed once for two yards and caught two of three targets for 19 yards in Friday's 34-13 loss to the Dolphins. Cook got three touches compared to 14 for Breece Hall, while rookie Israel Abanikanda finished without a touch. The status quo in the Jets' backfield is unchanged heading into a Week 13 matchup with the Falcons, with Cook locked in as the team's No. 2 running back but seeing minimal usage behind Hall.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Just two touches in Week 11

Cook rushed twice for 13 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 32-6 loss to the Bills. Michael Carter's departure leading up to the Week 11 loss didn't result in additional touches for Cook. Breece Hall was held to 23 rushing yards on 10 carries and has failed to reach 30 rushing yards in any of New York's last three games, but the team's No. 1 running back was its leading receiver Sunday and scored all of the Jets' points with a second-quarter touchdown catch. Hall's well-rounded skill set allows him to play a three-down role, leaving limited opportunities for Cook to see the field.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Looks spry in limited action

Cook rushed four times for 26 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 16-12 loss to the Raiders. Cook tied his season long with a 10-yard run in the second quarter. He also had his most efficient outing on the ground as a member of the Jets, as Cook's previous single-game best was 4.0 YPC. Breece Hall was held to just 28 rushing yards on 13 carries, but Cook's limited usage despite Hall's struggles just highlights how large the gap in role between the two running backs has grown.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Remains non-factor in Week 9

Cook rushed twice for seven yards and caught one of two targets for one yard in Monday's 27-6 loss to the Chargers. Cook has nine touches over the Jets' last three games, while Breece Hall has averaged 18.3 touches per game over that span. After mustering 59 yards from scrimmage in his Jets debut, Cook hasn't reached 30 yards in a game since, and that's unlikely to change barring an injury to Hall.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Just two Week 8 touches

Cook rushed twice for five yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 13-10 overtime win over the Giants. After expressing frustration with his role during the week, Cook was once again used sparingly. Breece Hall was hardly better on the ground with 17 yards on 12 carries, but Hall had 76 yards and the Jets' lone touchdown as a pass catcher. Cook is averaging just 2.8 YPC, and only one of his nine catches this season has gone for a first down, so Cook hasn't done much to earn more touches at Hall's expense.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Frustrated with role

Cook said Thursday he will speak with Jets general manager Joe Douglas about a possible trade due to frustrations with his role on offense, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Cook, who has carried the ball just 39 times for 109 yards (2.8 YPC) across six appearances while hauling all nine of his targets for 46 yards, is now operating as the clear backup to Breece Hall after opening the season in a timeshare. The veteran back has just 10 touches over the last two games while Hall has 42, so frustrations with his reduced role are understandable, but Cook has shown little from a production standpoint to convince the coaching staff that he's deserving of more touches. It's possible that Cook earns a few more reps during Sunday's game against the Giants after making his grievances with his role public, but even if he were to officially request a trade, there's no guarantee teams around the league would be willing to part with much draft capital to bring him aboard.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Relegated to backup role

Cook rushed three times for 12 yards and caught his only target for two yards in Sunday's 20-14 win over the Eagles. Cook opened the season in a timeshare with Breece Hall, but Hall has 42 touches in the last two games compared to Cook's 10. The Jets have little reason to increase Cook's usage after the team's Week 7 bye, as the veteran running back is averaging a paltry 2.8 YPC, while Hall's at a robust 6.5 YPC.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Six carries in Week 5

Cook rushed six times for 23 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 31-21 win over the Broncos. While Cook delivered another pedestrian performance, Breece Hall worked as the focal point of New York's offense with 177 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. With Hall handling a full workload after being eased in over the first few weeks, Cook has been relegated to sharing backup duties with Michael Carter, who had 22 total yards on one carry and three catches Sunday. Heading into a Week 6 home game against the Eagles, Cook's averaging just 19.4 rushing yards per game with the Jets.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Impressing with speed in practice

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that Cook has been showing improved speed in practice, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports. Cook has been dreadful through four games, rushing for just 74 yards on 30 carries while adding 44 yards on eight catches. According to Saleh, Cook is still getting his legs underneath him after signing with the Jets in mid-August, but the numbers on the running back's GPS tracker in practice are improving. Saleh also said that fellow running back Breece Hall will no longer be on a pitch count after being eased in early in the season, per Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. With that in mind, unless Cook picks up the pace in games, he's likely to cede the more work to Hall in the near future.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Delivers another dud

Cook rushed five times for 16 yards while catching his lone target for two yards in Sunday's 23-20 loss to Kansas City. Cook continues to split backfield duties with Breece Hall (6-56-0) despite the latter's superior play through nearly a quarter of the season. That likely has more to do with the team limiting Hall's reps after he tore his ACL last year. Cook is averaging an abysmal 2.5 yards per attempt with the Jets after never recording a mark below 4.4 YPC in any of his previous six seasons with Minnesota. The 28-year-old will have to get things going in short order or run the risk of losing playing time, or even his roster spot, as the Jets continue to look for answers on the offensive side of the ball ahead of next Sunday's tilt against Denver.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Another forgettable showing

Cook rushed eight times for 18 yards and caught all three of his targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 15-10 loss to the Patriots. Cook got four fewer carries than Breece Hall, who also mustered a meager output with 18 rushing yards. New York's top two running backs should continue to split carries in Week 4 against the Chiefs, but the Jets' entire offense is in disarray with quarterback Zach Wilson struggling and the offensive line underperforming in both run-blocking and pass protection. Cook has just 58 rushing yards on 25 carries (2.3 YPC) through three games with the Jets.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Does little in loss to Dallas

Cook carried the ball four times for seven yards and caught his only target for five yards in Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Cowboys. Neither Cook nor Breece Hall could get anything going early against a dominant Dallas defense, and the Jets had to mostly abandon their running game late in the face of a huge deficit. Cook has just 71 scrimmage yards through his first two games with New York, and the team's backfield timeshare will limit his fantasy appeal in Week 3 against the Patriots.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Gets 16 touches to Hall's 11

Cook rushed 13 times for 33 yards and caught all three of his targets for 26 yards in Monday's 22-16 overtime win over the Bills. Cook led the Jets in rushing attempts, but Breece Hall (127 yards on 10 carries) was far more effective on his touches. The original game plan may have been more heavily skewed in Cook's direction, but Hall earned close to an even split after mustering 109 yards on his first two carries. As Hall gets further removed from last year's torn ACL, he's likely to take on a larger workload, but considering Cook is coming off four consecutive seasons with over 1,100 rushing yards for the Vikings, he should maintain a sizable role even once his younger backfield-mate is fully up to speed. Aaron Rodgers (Achilles) could be done for the season after getting hurt on his first drive as a Jet, and while the offense's ceiling is far lower with Zach Wilson under center, the touch floor for both Hall and Cook should be high as New York moves to a more run-heavy approach, starting with the team's Week 2 trip to Dallas.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Still likely to lead backfield Monday

Cook is still expected to see the "bulk of the carries" out of the Jets backfield Monday against Buffalo and for the early part of the season, even though Breece Hall (knee) is set to be available Week 1, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Hall suffered a torn ACL and meniscus last October but seems to have had a relatively seamless recovery. Though Hall will take a questionable designation into Week 1, he's in line to be active for the contest after turning in a full practice Saturday. The Jets ultimately envision Hall stepping back in as their No. 1 back, but Cook -- who signed a one-year, $7 million deal with New York last month -- is set to lead the backfield early on as Hall is eased back in from knee surgery. Though the presence of Hall puts a ceiling on Cook's potential fantasy production, the former Vikings standout should see enough touches to be a useful RB2 or flex option in the majority of fantasy leagues until Hall is ready to handle a more sizable role.

  • Jets' Dalvin Cook: Healthy heading into Week 1

Cook (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Tuesday and declared himself healthy ahead of the Jets' Sept. 11 regular-season opener against the Bills, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. Cook's ongoing recovery from February shoulder surgery coupled with a trip to Florida for the birth of his child delayed his practice debut with the Jets, but he told the media after Tuesday's practice that he did "everything" and is fully healthy heading into the season. Breece Hall (knee) has also been making progress in his recovery, but Cook is expected to get more touches than Hall in the season opener while the Jets ease the second-year back into game action as he returns from a torn ACL. Both running backs are expected to be key contributors for the team's new-look offense in 2023.
