    The Chiefs re-signed Pennel to a one-year-deal Wednesday, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports Pennel will stay in Kansas City after spending the majority of last season on the Chiefs' practice squad. The 32-year-old should compete for a spot as a reserve defender after compiling four tackles (two solo) across three appearances a season ago.

  • Bears' Mike Pennel: Slated for free agency

    Pennel tallied one tackle in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season with 26 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery over 17 games played. Pennel played about 20 snaps per game in a rotational role, and his tackle total is right in line with the production he's posted in most of his nine-year career. He's only had more than 29 tackles once in his career, and that was when he had 35 with the Jets in 2017. He should find a depth role next year, as he's now an unrestricted free agent.

  • Bears' Mike Pennel: Heading back to Chicago

    Pennel signed a contract with the Bears on Monday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports. Pennel previously signed a one-year contract with the Bears in June 2021 but was released with an injury settlement after landing on the team's injured reserve just before the regular season. The 31-year-old nose tackle wound up signing a one-year contract with Atlanta and registered 21 tackles over 10 games as a rotational defensive lineman. Pennel should provide much-needed depth along Chicago's interior defensive line following the loss of veterans Akiem Hicks and Bilal Nichols in free agency.

  • Falcons' Mike Pennel: Promoted from practice squad

    Pennel was promoted to the Falcons' active roster from the practice squad Tuesday, Scott Bair of the team's official site reports. Pennell signed with Atlanta's practice squad in mid-September and will now join the active roster ahead of Week 5. The 30-year-old spent the past two seasons in Kansas City and totaled 29 tackles (23 solo) in 14 games in 2021.

Pennel was originally facing a year-long suspension, which would have kept him out for the rest of this season as well as the majority of the 2017 season. Now that is has been reduced to four games, the defensive tackle would be eligible to return during the playoffs, should the Packers make it that far.
