  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Good to go Sunday

Rush (illness) is listed as active ahead of Sunday's playoff matchup against the Packers, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. Rush was deemed questionable due to an ailment Friday after avoiding the Cowboys' injury reports Wednesday and Thursday. While the nature of this issue was never disclosed, the 30-year-old will once again be available as the team's backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott for Sunday's wild-card game. Rush has seen action in mop-up duty during seven games this season, completing 18 of 24 passes for 144 yards and one interception.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Active as No. 2 quarterback

Rush is active Sunday against the Jets, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. Rush will operate as the Cowboys' backup quarterback Sunday, as he remains ahead of Trey Lance on the team's depth chart. The veteran signal caller saw action at the end of the Cowboys' blowout victory over the Giants in Week 1, playing just seven snaps and attempting one pass. Rush would be the next man up if necessary behind Dak Prescott in Week 2.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Efficient in preseason opener

Rush completed 10 of 12 passes for 83 yards in Saturday's 28-23 preseason loss to the Jaguars. The 29-year-old got the start at quarterback with Dak Prescott being held out of the Cowboys' preseason opener and was efficient on three drives, although none of them resulted in points for Dallas. Rush remains the favorite to serve as the No. 2 QB behind Prescott this season, but a big showing from Will Grier on Saturday has kept the competition alive for now.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Struggles in SNF loss

Rush completed just 18 of 38 pass attempts for 181 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 26-17 loss to the Eagles. Rush was harassed from start to finish, resulting in his worst outing since being forced to take over as the Cowboys' starting quarterback in Week 2. The 28-year-old had flourished as a game manager with four touchdowns and no turnovers over his last four starts before getting exposed by Philadelphia's secondary Sunday. Rush's run as starter may come to a close ahead of next Sunday's tilt against the Lions, as Dak Prescott (thumb) was able to get in a throwing session before Sunday's primetime loss. The quarterback situation in Dallas should become clearer as we progress through the upcoming practice week.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Starting again in Week 6

Rush will serve as the Cowboys' starting quarterback Sunday at Philadelphia with Dak Prescott (thumb) inactive. Such was the expectation, but Prescott may have put himself in a position to return Week 7 versus the Lions after going through a throwing session ahead of Sunday's game. In the meantime, though, Rush will receive a fifth consecutive start, the first four of which resulted in Cowboys wins. During those performances, he completed 62 percent of his passes (65 of 105) for 705 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Likely getting another start

The Cowboys are preparing for Rush and not Dak Prescott (thumb) to start Sunday's game versus the Eagles, Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. While the Cowboys aren't completing dismissing the idea of Prescott putting an end to his four-game absence this weekend, McCarthy noted that the franchise signal-caller will only do "light throwing" on the sideline Wednesday during Dallas' first official Week 6 practice, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports. Unless Prescott's surgically repaired thumb shows dramatic healing in the next two days that allows him to grip the football and throw at optimal velocity without inhibition, Rush looks as though he'll be making his fifth consecutive start. The Cowboys have thus far gone 4-0 under Rush's stewardship, though much of the credit during that unbeaten run goes to the team's stalwart defense. For his part, Rush hasn't turned the ball over and has thrown for four touchdowns, but he's averaging a so-so 7.4 yards per attempt while completing 61.9 percent of his passes.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Quiet in Sunday's win

Rush completed 10 of 16 passes for 102 yards without a touchdown or interception in Sunday's 22-10 win over the Rams. He also lost one yard on four carries. The 28-year-old quarterback had a poor performance from a fantasy perspective, but Rush didn't need to be a hero with the defense and running game carrying the load. Dak Prescott (thumb) has yet to show the progress in his recovery needed in order to get back on the field, which likely leaves Rush under center once again in Week 6 in what's become a huge NFC East showdown with the undefeated Eagles.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Officially on active roster

Rush, who is expected to start Sunday against the Bengals, signed a contract with the Cowboys on Saturday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Rush was technically on the practice squad and previously was a Week 1 call-up, but the Cowboys quickly rectified the issue by officially signing the backup to the 53-man squad. Rush is expected to start Sunday against the Bengals, with Will Grier projected to act as his backup.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Next man up with Prescott out

Rush is expected to step in as Dallas' starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Bengals, as Dak Prescott is likely to miss 6-to-8 weeks after undergoing surgery Monday to address a fractured right hand, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Prescott exited in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' season-opening 19-3 loss to Tampa Bay after suffering the injury when he struck the outstretched hand of Buccaneers defender Shaquil Barrett while attempting a pass. Rush stepped in to finish the contest, completing seven of 13 passes for 64 yards while taking two sacks. Once Prescott officially is placed on injured reserve in the coming days, Rush -- who was elevated from the practice squad Sunday -- is expected to be formally added to the 53-man roster. Will Grier is another candidate to be promoted from the practice squad to provide depth at QB, but during Prescott's absence, expect Dallas to look outside the organization to add at least one more quarterback to the 53-man roster or the practice squad to restore numbers at the position. Over 11 contests (but only one start) during his six-year NFL career, Rush has been a capable game manager with a 60.3 percent completion rate (38-for-63) for 7.7 yards per attempt, three touchdowns and one interception, but he doesn't present much of a threat as a scrambler and is likely to preside over a run-heavy offense led by Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Rush's fantasy appeal will be limited to two-quarterback and superflex formats, and he may be only a low-end lineup option even in those formats while he's serving as Dallas' starter.

  • Cooper Rush: Named No. 2 QB for Dallas

Rush will back up Dak Prescott to begin the season, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports. While Rush is currently on the practice squad as part of some roster juggling shenanigans by the Cowboys, the 28-year-old will be promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 1's game against the Buccaneers. Rush started only one game last season but made it count, leading Dallas to a Week 8 win in Minnesota.

  • Cooper Rush: Joins Cowboys' practice squad

Rush has signed with Dallas' practice squad, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports. Rush was competing with Will Grier for the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott during training camp. The team ultimately opted to cut both and keep Prescott as the lone quarterback on the 53-man roster. The team will likely call up one of the two to be the emergency backup come Week 1.

  • Cooper Rush: Released by Dallas

The Cowboys released Rush on Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports. Rush and Will Grier were competing for the top backup spot behind Dak Prescott, but it appears neither backup quarterback will have a spot on the team's initial 53-man roster. The Cowboys will likely bring back at least one of the two backups via a practice squad deal so he can operate as an emergency option during game days.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Starting Saturday's exhibition

Coach Mike McCarthy said Rush will start Saturday's preseason game at the Chargers with Dak Prescott not suiting up, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. Like he did during preseason Week 1 at Denver, Rush will get the nod first under center for the Cowboys. In that contest, he complete 12 of 20 passes for 84 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while adding a nine-yard carry. Once Rush is done for the contest, Will Grier will enter for him, with Ben DiNucci working the fourth quarter.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Headed back to No. 2 role

Rush is expected to serve as the Cowboys' backup quarterback Sunday against the Broncos after head coach Mike McCarthy said Dak Prescott (calf) is on track to start Week 9 upon returning to full participation in practice Thursday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. Prescott appeared close to playing last week leading up to the Cowboys' eventual 20-16 win over the Vikings, so it comes as little surprise that he's on track to return to the lineup after he participated in both of the Cowboys' first two Week 9 practices. Barring a setback over the next day or two, Prescott will take back the reins of the offense from Rush, who performed capably against Minnesota in the first extended NFL action of his five-year career. He completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 325 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, though he committed a pair of turnovers (an interception and a lost fumble).

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Excels in first NFL start

Rush completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 325 yards, two touchdowns, an interception and a fumble lost in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Vikings. Rush was called into action for his first career start after Dak Prescott (calf) was ruled out during warmups. Dallas' five-year backup responded without hesitation, posting big passing numbers while leading his team to what turned out to be an upset win on the road. The 27-year-old was not rattled by his moment in the national spotlight, commanding the offense with confidence while utilizing all of the Cowboys' top receiving weapons. Prescott has a good shot to return to action against the Broncos next week given his game-time decision tag in Week 8, so Rush is likely to return to backup duties. If for any reason he does end up starting again this season, the backup may have inspired enough confidence to trust in a spot start, or at least give the managers of Dallas' position players confidence that a huge drop in production isn't guaranteed.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Falls flat in preseason finale

Rush completed four of eight passes for 16 yards in Sunday's preseason loss to the Jaguars. The 27-year-old got the start in the preseason finale but had no success moving the ball, although he was working with the Cowboys' second-team offensive line and skill players against Jacksonville's first-team defense. Garrett Gilbert replaced Rush after three series and only did a little better against the Jags' second-teamers, leaving the backup situation behind Dak Prescott (shoulder) just as murky as it was coming into the game. There's still a strong chance Dallas will find a veteran QB to be the team's No. 2 after rosters are cut down Tuesday rather than trusting either Gilbert or Rush, but the front office did miss a chance to acquire Gardner Minshew earlier this week for only a Day 3 draft pick in 2022, which suggests the team isn't willing to give up any kind of real asset to address the position.

  • Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Making push for backup job

Rush could be putting pressure on Garrett Gilbert for the No. 2 QB job behind Dak Prescott (shoulder), Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com reports. Rush was by far the most effective signal-caller for the Cowboys on Saturday night, completing 10 of 12 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Gilbert, who got the start, completed three of five passes for 30 yards and lost a fumble, and Ben DiNucci was picked off three times by the Texans' second and third-string defenders in the second half. Any camp battle could wind up moot if the team brings in a more established veteran after rosters get cut down across the league, but based on Saturday's showing Rush is making a case to surpass Gilbert on the current depth chart.

  • Cooper Rush: Likely not starting Week 9

Rush is not expected to start Sunday's game against the Steelers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. It appears as if Garrett Gilbert will take over as the Cowboys' starting quarterback Sunday in lieu of Rush, who is expected to be called up to the active roster sometime this weekend. Given Ben DiNucci's struggles in the same role last week, it'll be interesting to see whether Rush or DiNucci acts as the backup in what figures to be a tough matchup against the Steelers' defense.

  • Cooper Rush: Being considered for Week 9 start

The Cowboys are considering going with Rush as their starting quarterback Sunday against the Steelers after Andy Dalton (concussion) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. There was optimism Dalton would get through the concussion protocol in time for Sunday's game, only for the veteran to contract COVID-19. Ben DiNucci got the first opportunity to replace Dalton this past Sunday at Philadelphia, leading the Cowboys to a 23-9 loss while completing 21 of 40 passes for 180 yards, getting sacked four times, losing two fumbles and gaining 22 yards on five carries. The ugly performance seems to be swaying coach Mike McCarthy to consider other options, namely Rush, who currently is on the team's practice squad. If McCarthy really is looking at all his options, Garrett Gilbert is the other healthy QB in addition to DiNucci on the active roster.

  • Cooper Rush: Drops from practice squad

The Giants cut Rush from the practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Rush followed Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett from Dallas to the Big Apple, but after three weeks, the QB was let go in favor of Clayton Thorson. Rush will seek a new practice squad role elsewhere.
