Player Outlook
Garoppolo was supposed to be Josh McDaniels' replacement for Derek Carr in Las Vegas this year. He still may be, but offseason foot surgery has left Garoppolo's health in doubt. The veteran has only played 16 games once in his career and he's only played double-digit games three times. We won't advise drafting him in one-QB leagues even if he's 100% in the preseason, but you can't even consider him a two-QB starter until he's a full go. If the Raiders add another veteran QB in training camp, you can take that as a sign things may not be going well in Garoppolo's recovery. If Tom Brady shows up in silver and black, we'll know for sure.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Returns to full practice

Garoppolo (back) practiced fully Friday, Anthony Galaviz of The Fresno Bee reports. After not practicing at all last week and being inactive for the Raiders' loss to the Bears, Garoppolo returned to the field Thursday as a limited participant. A full practice Friday sets the stage for the quarterback to return to the starting role Monday against the Lions, making him a Week 8 lineup option for those in deeper formats or in leagues that start two quarterbacks. In the five games he's played this season, Garoppolo has posted a 7:8 TD:INT and 1,079 passing yards.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Won't play in Week 7

Garoppolo (back) has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Chicago, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports. Garoppolo was forced out of the Raiders' Week 6 win against the Patriots with a back injury in the second quarter and took an ambulance to a local hospital. After failing to practice at all Wednesday through Friday, he'll miss at least one contest as a result. The Raiders have yet to make a decision on their Week 7 starting quarterback, but coach Josh McDaniels told Tashan Reed of The Athletic that they'll know for sure who's getting the call between veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie fourth-round pick Aidan O'Connell after Friday's session. Garoppolo's next chance to play comes Oct. 30 at Detroit.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Not in line to play Sunday

Garoppolo (back) is not slated to play Sunday against the Bears, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. With Garoppolo, who didn't practice Wednesday, trending toward being ruled out by the Raiders ahead of Sunday's game, either Brian Hoyer or Aidan O'Connell will get the Week 7 start at QB. Assuming Garoppolo ends up missing this weekend's contest, he'll target a potential return to action Week 8 against the Lions (Mon, Oct. 30).

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Set for more tests Monday

Garoppolo will undergo more tests Monday to determine the severity of the back injury he suffered in Sunday's 21-17 win over the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Garoppolo was injured midway through the Week 6 win and was taken to a Las Vegas-area hospital for evaluation. According to Schefter, the Raiders are of the belief that it's too soon to speculate about his availability for the team's Week 7 game against the Bears. Brian Hoyer was active as the No. 2 quarterback against New England and came in to replace Garoppolo, but it was rookie Aidan O'Connell who drew the start in Las Vegas' Week 4 loss to the Chargers when Garoppolo was out with a concussion. As a result, it's unclear which of the two signal-callers might be first in line to fill in for Garoppolo should he sit out Sunday.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Unlikely to return Sunday

Garoppolo (back) isn't expected to return to Sunday's game against the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Garoppolo was seen grabbing at his lower back before going to the locker room in the second quarter. He then was spotted getting into an ambulance and leaving the stadium entirely, per Heidi Fang of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. With Aidan O'Connell inactive Sunday, Brian Hoyer will direct the Raiders offense for the rest of Week 6.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Hurts back Sunday

Garoppolo was forced out of Sunday's game against the Patriots with a back injury. With Garoppolo injured and Aidan O'Connell inactive, Brian Hoyer will take over at QB for the Raiders. Prior to his exit Sunday, Garoppolo completed 14 of his 22 passing attempts for 162 yards, with a TD and an interception.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Works around INT in MNF win

Garoppolo completed 22 of 31 pass attempts for 208 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Monday's 17-13 win over the Packers. Garoppolo made a healthy return from a one-game absence due to a concussion suffered against Pittsburgh in Week 3. The veteran signal-caller had a pedestrian fantasy line but played well considering his best weapon, Davante Adams (shoulder), wasn't at full strength Monday. Garoppolo did throw an ill-advised interception on the opening drive of the second half when he forced an outside throw to a covered Jakobi Meyers that was easily picked off by Green Bay's defense. It was an otherwise solid performance from Las Vegas' starting quarterback as he prepares to face the team that drafted him in a home matchup against New England on Sunday.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Clears protocol, practices fully

Garoppolo (concussion) practiced fully Friday, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports. Per Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network and Adam Schefter of ESPN, Garoppolo has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and thus is slated to start Monday night's game against the Packers. Prior to being inactive for the Raiders' Week 4 loss to the Chargers -- which Aidan O'Connell started -- the veteran QB completed 68.1 percent of his passes for 709 yards, with five touchdowns and six interceptions through the three games he suited up for this season.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: In line to play Monday

Garoppolo gained clearance to play from the concussion protocol and is slated to start Monday against the Packers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Garoppolo opened Week 5 prep Thursday with a limited listing on the Raiders' injury report. Assuming he was a full participant Friday, he'll seemingly be on track to miss just one game as a result of the health concern. With Garoppolo's status likely to be cleared up in the near future, the main question mark for the Raiders offense is Davante Adams, who didn't practice Thursday or Friday due to a shoulder issue. Adams has two more chances to put himself in a position to suit up versus his former team Monday.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Officially limited Thursday

Garoppolo (concussion) was listed as a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports. A previous report from Levi Edwards of the Raiders' official site suggested that Garoppolo was on track to practice fully, but he ended up being officially deemed limited by the Raiders. In any case, the QB is reportedly in the final stages of the NFL's concussion protocol, which has him trending in the right direction as Monday night's game against Green Bay approaches.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Slated to practice fully

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels said that Garoppolo is in "the final stages" of the NFL's concussion protocol and will be a full practice participant Thursday, Levi Edwards of the Raiders' official site reports. Garoppolo sat out this past Sunday's loss to the Chargers after he wasn't able to clear the protocol seven days after suffering the brain injury in the Raiders' Week 3 loss to the Steelers. The veteran quarterback looks to be trending toward a return to action Week 5, however, as his ability to take part in the entire practice Thursday bodes well for his chances of gaining clearance for Monday's game against the Packers in the absence of any setbacks. Garoppolo logged limited practices last Thursday and Friday before ultimately sitting out against the Chargers, enabling rookie Aidan O'Connell to pick up his first NFL start.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Remains in concussion protocol

Head coach Josh McDaniels said Monday that Garoppolo is still in the concussion protocol and will be the starting quarterback when he's cleared, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports. Garoppolo missed the Raiders' Week 4 loss to the Chargers, sending rookie Aidan O'Connell into action. O'Connell had mixed results in his first career start, so it's not surprising to see Garoppolo get a vote of confidence from his coach. The veteran quarterback will have until Thursday to clear protocols before Las Vegas has to post its first injury report of Week 5 prep, as the Raiders will face the Packers on Monday Night Football this week.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Listed as questionable for Week 4

Garoppolo (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers after logging another limited practice Friday, Anthony Galaviz of The Fresno Bee reports. Garoppolo has yet to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol, but he was able to practice in limited fashion Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday. If he gains clearance in time to suit up Sunday, Garoppolo would benefit from a favorable matchup against a Los Angeles secondary that's allowing a league-high 337 passing yards per game. Should Garoppolo sit, either veteran Brian Hoyer or rookie Aidan O'Connell would lead the offense.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Adds/Streamers (QB Preview)

Garoppolo is getting the ball out on time in Josh McDaniels offense, which is taking away the threat of the pass rush. This week he's at home against a Pittsburgh defense coming off an emotional win on a short week. This game has low-key shootout appeal, and Garoppolo is a solid streamer, especially if he gets Jakobi Meyers back.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Turns in full practice

Garoppolo (ankle) was a full practice participant Thursday. The Raiders haven't revealed whether Garoppolo's listed ankle injury is related to his surgically repaired left foot, but his upgrade from limited practice participation Wednesday to full participation Thursday erases any concern about his availability for Sunday's game in Buffalo. Garoppolo proved to be an effective game manager in the Raiders' 17-16 win over the Broncos in Week 1, committing just one turnover (an interception) while completing 20 of 26 pass attempts for 200 yards and two touchdowns to go with an additional nine yards on the ground.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Gets first win with LV

Garoppolo completed 20 of 26 pass attempts for 200 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 17-16 win over the Broncos. Garoppolo had a successful debut with the Raiders after signing a three-year, $67.5 million contract this past offseason. The 31-year-old looked healthy following offseason foot surgery, completing 77 percent of his passes and even taking off for an eight-yard scramble to extend a drive. Garoppolo got off to a good start against a tough defense, but he doesn't excite as a starter in fantasy. He will face another stiff test with his new club when the Raiders stay on the road to take on the Bills in Week 2.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Won't play in preseason opener

Garoppolo won't play in Sunday's preseason opener versus San Francisco, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports. Garoppolo was suited up for warmups, but he'll ultimately watch the exhibition from the sidelines, along with WRs Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow and TE Michael Mayer. The veteran quarterback's next chance to make his Raiders debut will come Saturday versus the Rams.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Could be released without penalty

Garoppolo's three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders contains a clause that would allow Las Vegas to release him without penalty if he's unable to pass a physical due to his surgically repaired foot, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report. Garoppolo fractured his left foot while playing with the 49ers in early December, then underwent surgery in March, shortly after he finalized his contract with Las Vegas. According to a waiver and release clause in the deal, Garoppolo acknowledged the risk of further injury while continuing to play upon his return from surgery, and he also waived any responsibility on the part of the Raiders, who can terminate his contract with no further obligation or financial ramifications. The waiver becomes null and void if Garoppolo passes a physical at any point during the 2023 season, however. While the terms of the deal give the Raiders an easy out to move on from Garoppolo if his recovery doesn't proceed as anticipated, the team won't have much in the way of appealing alternatives. The Raiders are left with 37-year-old journeyman Brian Hoyer, fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell and 2022 undrafted free agent Chase Garbers as the other signal-callers on the roster. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater and Joe Flacco are the most experienced options among an uninspiring crop of quarterbacks on the free-agent market.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Recovering from March surgery

Garoppolo had foot surgery in March, shortly after signing with the Raiders, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report. Coach Josh McDaniels didn't provide a timeline or details, though he told reporters Garoppolo's absence from spring practices was expected. The Raiders apparently discovered that the QB needed surgery during a physical exam, after he'd avoided going under the knife in December when he suffered the left foot fracture. The 31-year-old never returned from the injury last season but might've been able to do so had the 49ers won one more game and reached the Super Bowl. His new team is confident Garoppolo will be ready for Week 1, and it helps that both he and backup quarterback Brian Hoyer have played in McDaniels' offenses before.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Set to join Vegas

The Raiders agreed Monday to a contract with Garoppolo (foot), Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Per Schefter, Garoppolo's looming deal with the Raiders is a three-year, $67.5 million pact that includes $34 million guaranteed. In his new locale, Garoppolo is in line take over Las Vegas' starting QB slot, which had been vacated by the departure of Derek Carr, who is now with the Saints. In the process, Garoppolo is reunited with head coach Josh McDaniels, who worked with the signal-caller earlier in his career while the two were both with the Patriots.
