Aaron Smith blew a two-handed kiss to nearly 10,000 Steelers fans crammed into Latrobe’s stadium Friday, then tapped his heart. But it won’t be his only goodbye -- Smith, Joey Porter and more were told they’ll get invited to a Heinz Field game for a full-bore retirement ceremony.
“Me and Aaron go back a long way,” said Porter. “I was the third-round pick, he was the fourth. We came in together. He was with me at the airport when I bought a wedding ring for my wife.”
Porter didn’t perform his hallmark post-sack kick, known as The Boot. “I’ll save it for” the Heinz Field ceremony, he said.
Friday night fights OG Willie Colon got into a fight with DE Cameron Heyward, and afterward Mike Tomlin declined any comment about Colon ... other than the fact he suffered a minor ankle injury.
Backs-on-‘backers: Tomlin doesn’t permit the goalline drill that was the calling card of these annual Friday night festivities under predecessor Bill Cowher, so the physical highlight of his camp night out is when RBs collide with LBs. TE turned FB David Johnson dominated. “A stout man. Stout,” Tomlin said. “D.J. was the star.” Interestingly, Johnson still wears No. 85, meaning he’ll either be an H-back come the regular season, revert to TE or change numbers to become a full-time FB.
