Matt Forte's ankle might not be as bad as originally thought, but the Bears still have a lot of work to do.  (US Presswire)

Bears running back Matt Forte left last Thursday night's game against the Packers with an ankle injury, one that was later called a high-ankle sprain. Depending on the severity, that could mean weeks out of the lineup. But coach Lovie Smith said Monday it's apparently not as bad as originally reported.

"Matt did go down with an ankle injury," Smith said during a radio appearance (via ESPNChicago.com). "It's not a high-ankle sprain, as has been reported. But right now, you know when you don't finish the game and he still has some soreness, we'll continue to monitor it. But we felt we needed another running back here. That's why we brought back a guy who knows our system and has played good ball for us in Kahlil Bell."

So that's a sliver of good news in an otherwise forgettable performance against Green Bay. And while Smith was happy to talk about Forte's status, he was less forthcoming when the conversation turned to the on-field confrontation between quarterback Jay Cutler and left tackle J'Marcus Webb.

"We've moved on from the last game," Smith said. "We didn't play as well as we needed to. We didn't handle some situations as we needed to. We like our football team. Things happen inside that you would like they weren't portrayed in the public. But that happens sometimes, and you move on.

"We don't have any major issues except we lost the football game and can't wait for the team to get back on the field this week."

It sure looked like the Bears had some major issues aside from the score. Cutler threw four interceptions, his receivers weren't particularly helpful and the offensive line struggled to keep him upright. Immediately after the loss, Cutler blamed frustration for his antics.

"I care about this; this isn't just a hobby for me," he said at the time. "I'm not doing this for my health. I'm trying to win football games. I'm trying to get first downs. And when we're not doing the little things, when we're not doing things the right way consistently, I'm going to say something. If they want a quarterback that doesn't care, they need to get somebody else."

Getting Forte back sooner rather than later would be a good start, but let's be honest: It's not like Cutler was setting the world on fire before Forte's third-quarter injury.
