Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Falls into platoon role
Encarnacion will start in right field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Earlier this month, Encarnacion appeared to have taken hold of a full-time role while dabbling between designated hitter and the corner outfield, but he looks to have moved into a short-side platoon role following Grant McCray's promotion from Triple-A Sacramento last Wednesday. Each of the right-handed-hitting Encarnacion's last three starts have come against left-handed pitching, while he's been excluded from the lineup in each of the Giants' last four matchups with right-handed pitchers.

Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Hits go ahead home run
Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's win over the Athletics.
Encarnacion led off the top of the 10th with a two-run blast against Dany Jimenez to give the Giants their first lead of the game and ultimately give them the win. It was his second home run and third game with multiple hits since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento at the beginning of the month. Encarnacion has started in 12-of-16 games since his promotion and is slashing .255/.300/.447 with seven RBI, five runs, a steal and a 3:14 BB:K in 50 plate appearances.

Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Not starting Wednesday
Encarnacion isn't in the Giants' lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Encarnacion will get a breather after going 0-for-7 with a strikeout to begin the Giants' four-game series with Atlanta. His absence will open a spot in the lineup for Grant McCray to make his MLB debut in center field while batting ninth.

Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Posts first steal
Encarnacion went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Tigers.
Encarnacion has hit fairly well since joining the Giants' roster, batting .286 over eight games. He's added a 2:8 BB:K, with both walks coming over his last two games. The 26-year-old has seen time in right field and at designated hitter, and he's seemingly passed Marco Luciano on the depth chart despite Luciano's stronger prospect pedigree. Encarnacion shouldn't be relied on for speed, but his power is a plus -- he has a homer and two doubles over 30 plate appearances.

Encarnacion was expected to fill a short-side platoon role for the Giants upon getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, but Wednesday will mark his fourth consecutive start and his second against an opposing right-handed starting pitcher in that span. After making each of his previous four starts with the big club in right field and going 6-for-17 with three extra-base hits during that stretch, Encarnacion will serve as the Giants' DH on Wednesday. The DH spot could be the primary home in the lineup for Encarnacion moving forward while Marco Luciano has gone 3-for-17 with eight strikeouts since a recent call-up of his own.

Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Swats first homer of season
Encarnacion hit a solo home run in his only at-bat in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Reds.
Encarnacion entered the contest as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning and logged his only at-bat in the eighth. He made the most of that opportunity, slugging a solo shot to bring San Francisco to within three runs. The homer was Encarnacion's first in the majors since he went deep three times over 23 games with Miami in 2022. Though he's struggled with contact issues, Encarnacion has also demonstrated substantial power as a pro, slugging 26 long balls across 122 contests at Triple-A in 2023 and belting 10 home runs in 33 games as a minor leaguer this year.

The Giants selected Encarnacion's contract from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.
The 26-year-old signed a minor-league contract with the Giants in May after beginning the year in the Mexican League, and he'll receive a look in the big leagues after he posted a .352/.438/.616 slash line with 10 homers in 33 games for Triple-A Sacramento. Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Will be added to roster Friday
The Giants will call up Encarnacion from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Encarnacion, 26, began the season in the Mexican League before signing a minor-league contract with the Giants in May. Since joining Sacramento, he's hit a blistering .352/.438/.616 with 10 home runs in just 33 games. Encarnacion was once a prospect of some repute with the Marlins, reaching the majors for a 23-game cup of coffee in 2022, but he produced a .548 OPS and struck out at a 39.5 percent rate. Miami didn't re-sign him after he struck out 200 times last season with Triple-A Jacksonville, but he's resurrected his career. Encarnacion has been playing more first base lately with Triple-A Sacramento, and the Giants' initial plan seems to be using him as a short-side platoon player at that position.

The 25-year-old outfielder received the chance to make his big-league debut in 2022 but didn't distinguish himself over his 81 plate appearances for Miami, slashing .182/.210/.338 while striking out at a 39.5 percent clip. He'll likely be in line to spend most of the 2023 campaign at Jacksonville unless injuries to other outfielders open up a more extended opportunity in the majors.
