Player Outlook
The season slash line reads ugly at .203/.250/.343, but Brenton Doyle did some exciting things in spurts over the course of his rookie 2023 campaign, or at least enough to hint at future fantasy relevance. He stole 22 bases in 27 attempts while ranking in the 99th percentile among all major leaguers in sprint speed and he reached the double digits in home runs (10) on the second-to-last day of the regular season. Doyle also showed tremendous range in the outfield and a strong throwing arm, which are important elements in ensuring that he can maintain a starting role as his offensive development lags behind his already-elite defense. The 25-year-old is still too raw for draft-day consideration in standard mixed leagues, but it's easy to envision him becoming a popular waiver-wire pickup as 2024 rolls along.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Moved up to two hole

Doyle will start in center field and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Phillies. Doyle has been in the No. 9 spot in the batting order more than any other this season and had yet to hit higher than sixth prior to Wednesday. His move up the order is in part due to injuries (Kris Bryant, Brendan Rodgers) and days off (Charlie Blackmon, Nolan Jones), in addition to the fact that the Rockies are facing a lefty pitcher (Cristopher Sanchez). Nonetheless, Doyle has also earned the move up the lineup by slashing .292/.333/.508 with three home runs over his first 18 games this season.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Smacks third homer

Doyle went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday against the Blue Jays. Doyle has had a productive weekend series against the Blue Jays, as he's gone 4-for-9 with three runs scored, a homer and two RBI. He now has three long balls and a .909 OPS for the season but surprisingly has only one stolen base attempt. While Doyle's production may be coming in a different form than projected, he's nevertheless had a primarily positive start to the campaign.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Scores twice

Doyle went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored Friday against the Blue Jays. The performance marked Doyle's fourth multi-hit performance in his last seven starts, though this was his first away from Coors Field. He's had an impressive start to the season, highlighted by five doubles and nine runs scored across 54 plate appearances. Doyle will need to cut down on his 33.3 percent strikeout rate to maintain his .314 average, but he should keep a consistent spot in the lineup thanks to his strong defense in center field.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Slugs first long ball of season

Doyle went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and an additional run in Saturday's 9-4 win against the Diamondbacks. Doyle's eighth-inning, two-run shot gave Colorado some breathing room, as it expanded the team's lead from three runs to five. The second-year outfielder has gone 3-for-9 through the first three games of the campaign, though he's also struck out four times. Doyle reportedly put on about 20 pounds in the offseason, and he'll look to generate more power this year after slugging a modest 10 homers over 431 plate appearances as a rookie.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Cutting down on strikeouts

Doyle has struck out only four times across 24 plate appearances this spring. Doyle is the presumptive starting center fielder for the Rockies due primarily to his excellent defense. He also has an intriguing blend of power and speed, though he has regularly had an inflated strikeout rate that threatens to mute that upside. Notably, he hit just .203 while reaching base at a .250 clip in 431 plate appearances in the majors last season, so any ability to lower his strikeout rate could be a significant boost to his fantasy value.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Bulks up over offseason

Doyle put on 20 pounds of good weight since the end of the 2023 season, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Doyle made his big-league debut in 2023 and appeared in 126 games, all of which came in center field. He showed some intriguing power and speed potential, tallying 10 homers and 22 steals in 431 plate appearances. Doyle posted only a .140 ISO, so the added muscle could help him reach more power. However, his primary path to improved production would be cutting down on his 35 percent strikeout rate.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Homers, steals base

Doyle went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, an additional RBI and one steal in Saturday's loss to the Twins. Doyle came through late for the Rockies, delivering a two-run homer in the seventh inning before plating another run on an RBI single in the eighth. Doyle has now logged three or more RBI in two of his last three games, a span in which he's batting 5-for-13 (.384).

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Drives in four in win

Doyle went 2-for-5 with a triple, a double, four RBI and one run scored in Thursday's 14-5 win over the Dodgers. Doyle knocked in two runs with each of his two hits in the contest. This was just his fifth multi-hit effort in 24 games in September, and he's batting .250 (20-for-80) for the month. That's better than his .199 mark on the year, which comes with a meager .584 OPS in 123 contests overall. Doyle has added nine home runs, 45 RBI, 46 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Path to playing time clears up

Doyle will start in center field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Padres. Doyle had already been seeing fairly steady playing time in the outfield since the All-Star break in the absence of both Charlie Blackmon (hand) and Kris Bryant (finger), but the Rockies' recent trade of Randal Grichuk to the Angels should free up center field for Doyle even when Blackmon and Bryant return to action. Doyle will man center for a fourth consecutive game, even while he remains in an extended funk at the plate. Thus far in the second half, Doyle is hitting just .133/.204/.244 with one home run and two stolen bases while striking out at a 42.9 percent clip.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Nabs fourth straight start

Doyle will start in center field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals. Coming out of the All-Star break, Doyle appeared to be at risk of shifting into more of a part-time role, but he should be in store for steady playing time after Kris Bryant (finger) joined Charlie Blackmon (hand) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. While starting in all but one of the Rockies' games so far in the second half, Doyle is batting just .179 but has provided a home run and two stolen bases.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Strong showing in win

Doyle went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 7-2 win over the Yankees. Doyle's playing time slipped before the All-Star break after a poor June, but he got the nod in center field to begin the second half. The speedy outfielder is up to 13 steals this season, including three over his last nine games, despite batting just .217 (5-for-23) in that span. Doyle has a .216/.277/.364 slash line with six home runs, 24 RBI, 27 runs scored, six doubles and a triple over 196 plate appearances. He'll need to hit a bit better to keep getting consistent work, as the Rockies enjoy relatively strong outfield health at the moment with five players competing for three spots.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Takes seat again Wednesday

Doyle is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. After sitting out Tuesday's 4-1 loss while right-hander Brandon Bielak was on the mound for Houston, Doyle will remain on the bench while the Astros bring another righty (J.P. France) to the bump for the series finale. The Rockies haven't disclosed that Doyle is dealing with an injury, so he may simply be the odd man out of a suddenly crowded outfield following Kris Bryant's recent return from the injured list. Randal Grichuk will cover center field in place of Doyle, who's loss of playing time comes while he's slashed an unremarkable. 190/.264/.278 since the beginning of June.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: On bench Thursday

Doyle is out of the lineup Thursday against the Dodgers. Randal Grichuk will start in center field and bat seventh as the Rockies take on the Dodgers and right-hander Emmet Sheehan. Doyle tallied his 11th stolen base of the year Wednesday but is slashing just .175/.254/.286 over his last 20 games (71 plate appearances) dating back to the first week of June.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Struggling to make contact

Doyle went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base Wednesday against the Dodgers. Doyle had a productive day, highlighted by his 11th stolen base of the season and third in his last 12 games. However, he also punched out twice and has a 38.1 percent strikeout rate in that same span. Despite maintaining just a .648 OPS across 170 plate appearances for the season, Doyle remains the Rockies' everyday center fielder.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Prevents shutout Saturday

Doyle went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 25-1 loss to the Angels. Doyle's eighth-inning blast was far too late to make a difference outside of preventing the shutout. The outfielder has homered twice in his last three games, and he's hit safely in nine of his last 12 contests, though he has no multi-hit efforts in that span. For the season, he's at a .215/.267/.376 slash line with six homers, 20 RBI, 20 runs scored and 10 stolen bases over 48 contests. His recent slump has yet to cost him much playing time -- he remains the Rockies' starter in center field.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Ends power drought

Doyle went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Reds. Doyle went deep to lead off the game and tally his fifth homer of the season, though he struck out in his other three at-bats. His long ball snapped a 28-game homerless stretch, during which he had only three total extra-base hits and struck out at a 34 percent clip. Despite those struggles, Doyle has retained a regular role in the lineup as the Rockies' center fielder.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Sitting Saturday

Doyle isn't in the Rockies' lineup Saturday against Atlanta. Doyle is 5-for-20 with an RBI and two runs scored across his last six games and will take a day off Saturday. Randal Grichuk will take over in center field and bat sixth while Doyle rests.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Swipes ninth bag

Doyle went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Red Sox. The rookie outfielder was also caught stealing, but he's still 9-for-11 on the basepaths over 40 contests since his promotion from Triple-A in late April. Doyle isn't adding a lot of other fantasy value, however -- he's mired in a 23-game homer drought, a stretch in which he carries a .203/.250/.257 slash line and a 35 percent strikeout rate.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Two hits, steal Thursday

Doyle went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a steal in Thursday's 5-4 loss against the Diamondbacks. Doyle's now 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts through his first 30 games with Colorado. The rookie outfielder has cooled off a bit at the plate, going 5-for-25 (.200) over his last eight games. Still, it's been a generally productive start for the 25-year-old. He's slashing .244/.284/.433 with four homers, 15 runs scored and 15 RBI. Doyle should continue to serve as the Rockies' primary center fielder as Randal Grichuk mans left while Kris Bryant (heel) is on the shelf.

  • Rockies' Brenton Doyle: Remains out of lineup

Doyle (knee) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. Doyle has not been able to return to the lineup since he was carted off the field after crashing into the wall Thursday against the Marlins. The outfielder will take a seat with Randal Grichuk getting the start in center field and hitting fifth against Tylor Megill and the Mets.
