Player Outlook
The carpet was laid out for Garrett Mitchell last spring. He had secured a regular role in the Milwaukee outfield and was coming off a strong first cup of major-league coffee in 2022. Unfortunately, though, he suffered significant damage to the labrum in his left shoulder in the 18th game of the 2023 regular season and required a surgical procedure that kept him out until late September. Mitchell was then left off the Brewers' roster for their Wild Card Series matchup against the Diamondbacks, and his standing within the organization was even further clouded by the record eight-year, $82 million contract doled out to top outfield prospect Jackson Chourio in early December. Mitchell has great speed and a mature plate approach, but he'll need steady playing time to make it count. Chourio now projects to be the Opening Day center fielder, with Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick flanking him in the corners. Fourth outfielders don't usually carry fantasy relevance.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Moves to IL

The Brewers placed Mitchell (finger) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Mitchell will likely face a 6-to-8-week absence to begin the season due to the fractured left index finger he suffered in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks. While Mitchell is on the shelf, the Brewers will likely turn to Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins to form a platoon in center field.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said in an interview Wednesday with 97.3 The Game Milwaukee that Mitchell is expected to be sidelined 6-to-8 weeks with a fractured finger on his left hand. Murphy revealed Monday that Mitchell suffered a fracture, and the skipper has now offered specifics on a timetable which will have the outfielder out well into May. Mitchell had been set to start in right field against right-handers, but now those duties will fall to Jackson Chourio, with Sal Frelick covering center field. On a positive note, Murphy said that Mitchell won't need surgery at this time.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Diagnosed with fractured hand

Mitchell will begin the season on the injured list after X-rays revealed a fracture in his left hand, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The outfielder suffered the injury when his hand was jammed on a swing Sunday. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Mitchell will visit with a hand specialist before more information is known about a potential timetable. Mitchell had been set for regular right field duty, but the Brewers might now look at Sal Frelick as a full-time outfielder while Mitchell is sidelined. Blake Perkins is also a candidate to see more at-bats.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Says hand feels fine

Mitchell said Monday that his injured hand feels fine, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Mitchell's hand swelled up on him when he was jammed on a swing Sunday, prompting the Brewers to send him for X-rays Monday. Although he had yet to undergo imaging when he spoke to reporters, he played catch with no issues Monday and it seems there is a low level of concern regarding the injury.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Candidate for leadoff spot

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Monday that Mitchell (hand) and Sal Frelick are candidates to bat leadoff versus right-handers, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Murphy prefers former leadoff man Christian Yelich in the No. 3 spot, creating an opening at the top of the batting order. Mitchell is a question mark right now for Thursday's season opener versus the Mets as he awaits X-ray results on his hand, but if he's healthy, he could be in a prime run-scoring spot.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Undergoes X-ray on hand

Mitchell underwent an X-ray Monday after suffering a hand injury during Sunday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Mitchell's hand swelled up a bit when he was jammed on a swing and the discomfort hadn't dissipated by Monday, necessitating him being sent for imaging. The Brewers are holding off on any final roster decisions until the get the results of Mitchell's X-ray. If healthy, Mitchell is projected for regular starts in right field and also looks to be in line to bat leadoff.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Gets going at plate

Mitchell went 6-for-14 (.429) with a double, two RBI, two runs and a 3:4 BB:K over his last five spring games. Mitchell got off to an 0-for-7 start in the exhibition season, but he seems to have found his swing over the last week-plus. A shoulder injury limited Mitchell to just 19 games in 2023, but he recovered late in the campaign and is fully healthy this spring. The Brewers are still evaluating how to best utilize their group of talented young outfielders, and it's unclear exactly how Mitchell will fit in. However, he brings enough power-speed potential to the table to warrant consideration from fantasy players.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Not on NL Wild Card Series roster

Mitchell is not on the roster for the Brewers' NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Diamondbacks. Mitchell returned for the final four games of the regular season following a nearly five-month recovery from shoulder surgery, but he went 1-for-7 with three walks and two strikeouts and will not be part of the outfield mix for Milwaukee's best-of-three series versus Arizona. There's no word of any setback, and Mitchell could be reconsidered for a roster spot if the Brewers are able to advance to the NLDS.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Sitting against lefty

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Activated from 60-day IL

The Brewers activated Mitchell (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list ahead of Thursday's game against the Cardinals. Mitchell finished off an eight-game minor-league rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Nashville and further proved his health during a couple of simulated games this week in Milwaukee. Sidelined since April 18 due to a shoulder injury that eventually required surgery, the 25-year-old center fielder can offer a boost to the Brewers offensively and defensively as they play out the final four games of the regular season and head into the playoffs. Mitchell has slashed .286/.341/.462 in 130 career major-league plate appearances dating back to his debut in August of 2022.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Expected to return Tuesday

Mitchell (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Mitchell required surgery back in early May to repair a subluxation and labrum damage in his left shoulder. While the Brewers haven't yet confirmed he will return Tuesday, McCalvy notes that all signs point to Mitchell being activated. Mitchell batted only .188/.257/.250 with three steals in eight rehab games with Triple-A Nashville, though he did collect four hits in his final 10 at-bats. With Sal Frelick taking over in center field and Tyrone Taylor swinging a hot bat in right field, Mitchell could find playing time hard to come by down the stretch following a long layoff.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Closing in on rehab assignment

Mitchell (shoulder) is set to meet with a doctor Thursday or Friday and could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Nashville as soon as this weekend, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Mitchell opened the season as the Brewers' everyday center fielder and was off to a solid start with a .259 average, three home runs and one stolen base in 16 games before suffering a left shoulder subluxation and associated labrum damage that required surgery May 2. Though the Brewers had some fear that the procedure would sideline Mitchell for the rest of the season, he's healed up well over the last few months and appears to be on the cusp of returning to game action. Hogg notes that Mitchell is expected to remain on assignment at Triple-A until Nashville's season ends Sept. 24, so any potential return from the 60-day injured list likely wouldn't come until the final week of the Brewers' regular season.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Doctor consultation on tap

Mitchell (shoulder) will have a doctor consultation at the end of the week to determine when he can get back in games, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hogg notes things are trending positively for Mitchell. Back on Aug. 22, Mitchell told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that he hoped to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville around Sept. 19. It seems like things are right on track, and Mitchell still has a chance to join the big club before the end of the season.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Making progress with shoulder

Mitchell (shoulder) said Tuesday that he's hoping to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville around Sept. 19, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. That would be the final week of the Triple-A regular season, and it could put Mitchell in line to return to the Brewers for the final week of the MLB regular season. The 24-year-old outfielder required surgery back in early May to repair the labrum in his left shoulder, but he's been performing most baseball activities without issue over the last couple of weeks.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Undergoes shoulder surgery

Mitchell underwent scheduled surgery Tuesday to repair the labrum in his left shoulder, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Mitchell is likely done for the remainder of the 2023 season, though Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Thursday that there is a sliver of hope he could return late in the year. The 24-year-old injured his shoulder April 18 on a slide into third base. Joey Wiemer has been drawing the majority of starts in center field for Milwaukee in recent weeks.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Heads to 60-day IL

The Brewers transferred Mitchell (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The transaction is a procedural move that clears up a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired reliever Trevor Megill. Mitchell is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left shoulder during the upcoming week, and while no timeline has been established for his return, he'll most likely miss the remainder of the season.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Will undergo surgery

Mitchell will have surgery on his left shoulder after receiving a second opinion Tuesday, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. After suffering significant damage to his labrum while sliding into third base last week against Seattle, Mitchell will now officially undergo surgery. The Brewers may not have a timeline for Mitchell's return until his surgery is completed, but the speedy center fielder will most likely miss the rest of the season, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Since Mitchell hurt his shoulder, Joey Wiemer has received the majority of reps in center field for Milwaukee, but that could change once Tyrone Taylor (elbow) and Sal Frelick (thumb) recover from their respective injuries.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Getting MRI on injured shoulder

Mitchell will undergo an MRI on his injured left shoulder Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Mitchell was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday after suffering multiple left shoulder subluxations late in Tuesday's win over the Mariners. The upcoming imaging should help the Brewers get a better idea of the severity and might yield a projected timeline for the young outfielder's return. Joey Wiemer and Owen Miller are expected to be the primary options in center field while Mitchell is in recovery mode. Triple-A Nashville call-up Blake Perkins could factor into the outfield mix as well.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Lands on IL

The Brewers placed Mitchell on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left shoulder subluxation, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Mitchell was spotted earlier Wednesday sporting a sling on the shoulder, which he injured late in Tuesday's 11-inning victory over Seattle. His move to the IL thus comes as little surprise, though the Brewers haven't indicated whether Mitchell will be in store for a minimum-length stay on the shelf or a longer-term absence. Blake Perkins was called up from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move and could help fill Mitchell's vacated spot in the outfield along with utility man Owen Miller.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Wearing sling

Mitchell (shoulder) was spotted in the Brewers' clubhouse Wednesday wearing a sling on his left arm, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The rookie outfielder exited Tuesday's win over the Mariners with a left shoulder subluxation. The team is expected to provide more information on Mitchell's status later Wednesday, but the fact that he's sporting a sling suggests he could be a candidate to go on the 10-day injured list.
