The Tigers optioned Faedo to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Though he made 12 starts in 2022 for a Tigers pitching staff that was decimated by injuries, Faedo faced a tough path to a spot in the season-opening rotation with Detroit adding starters Matthew Boyd and Michael Lorenzen in free agency and getting Spencer Turnbull (elbow) back from Tommy John surgery. Faedo didn't help his case for a spot on the Opening Day roster by allowing seven runs on 11 hits and three walks over 5.1 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander will now head to Toledo but should be on the top candidates for a call-up whenever Detroit is need of a spot starter in 2023.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Alex Faedo: Struggles Sunday
Faedo allowed three runs on four hits while retiring only two batters in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. Faedo underwent hip surgery in July, which ended his rookie season. He entered camp healthy and has now had one good performance followed by this rough one. The righty is likely on the outside looking in at the rotation, with Spencer Turnbull back in action, and Matthew Boyd and Michael Lorenzen added in free agency. Faedo could settle in as a long-relief option for the Tigers, which would limit his fantasy value in the short term, though the former first-round pick still has some upside if he starts down the road.... Tigers' Alex Faedo: Ready to compete for rotation
Faedo (hip) told Evan Woodbery of MLive.com on Tuesday that he feels great and is ready to compete for an Opening Day roster spot. Faedo pitched brilliantly over his first seven major-league starts last season and then got hammered in the next five. He ultimately posted a 5.53 ERA in 53.2 innings (12 starts) with the Tigers before undergoing surgery in late July to repair a torn labrum and torn capsule in his right hip. The 27-year-old is hoping to challenge for a starting job this spring, but he might wind up in long relief or in the rotation at Triple-A Toledo.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Beginning throwing soon
Faedo (hip) is expected to begin his throwing progression by mid-November and is tracking toward a return to 100 percent health in advance of spring training, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Faedo looks as though he's ready to start building back up again after he underwent surgery in late July on his right hip. The right-hander, who is currently focused on range-of-motion work, turned in a 5.53 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 12 big-league starts before being shut down with the hip injury.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Headed for season-ending surgery
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch confirmed Faedo will require season-ending surgery on his right hip, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The rookie right-hander will be undergoing his second major surgery of his professional career, as he previously had a Tommy John procedure in December 2020. After missing the entire 2020 and 2021 campaigns, Faedo bounced back effectively early on in 2022 to earn his first promotion to the big leagues, but he labored over his last few starts with the Tigers prior to being optioned to Triple-A Toledo shortly before the All-Star break. He was diagnosed with the right hip injury shortly thereafter and will wrap up his first year in the majors with a 5.53 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 53.2 innings. Hinch said he expects Faedo to be fully cleared for spring training, which should allow the 26-year-old right-hander to compete for a rotation spot.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Done for season
Faedo will likely require hip surgery and is done for the season, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Hip surgery is no small feat for a starting pitcher, so it's unclear if he will be fully recovered in time for spring training, assuming he does end up getting an operation. Faedo finished with a 5.53 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 44:25 K:BB in 53.2 innings (12 starts) for the Tigers.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Slated to visit specialists
Faedo (hip) won't pitch at Triple-A Toledo this weekend as originally planned due to continued discomfort, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Faedo has been dealing with a hip issue since last week but was initially slated to pitch in the minors this weekend. However, he'll visit specialists in the near future to help determine the nature and severity of the injury. Manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that he isn't sure how serious the issue is but said that it isn't a good sign that he'll need to visit specialists, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.... See More ... Tigers' Alex Faedo: Hip issue resurfaces
Faedo, who was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after starting Monday for the Tigers, may not pitch again prior to the All-Star break due to right hip soreness, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Faedo originally dealt with the hip issue last week but was cleared to start Monday, but he surrendered four runs over 1.2 innings and was demoted after the contest. The right-hander could make his way to the injured list if the Tigers opt to limited his workload for a week or two.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Returns to Triple-A after loss
Faedo (1-5) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks across 1.2 innings to take the loss in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Royals. He was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following the start. Faedo was ineffective in the outing, needing a whopping 60 pitches to retire five batters, with only 29 of those in the strike zone. The righty left his last start July 4 in the fourth inning with hip soreness, and it's possible that was still bothering him somewhat, though the team didn't note anything new on the injury front. Faedo will now look to get back on track in the minors. Across 12 starts in the majors, the 26-year-old has registered a 5.53 ERA. He'll likely get another shot at some point with the Tigers dealing with several injuries in the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Looks on track to start Monday
Faedo (hip) will join Detroit's taxi squad for its upcoming 12-game road trip and appears on track to be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start one half of Monday's doubleheader in Kansas City, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Faedo was most recently called up to start the second game of a twin bill this past Monday against the Guardians, with the right-hander exiting the contest early due to right hip soreness. Since he was designated as the 27th man for the doubleheader, he was optioned to Triple-A following the outing, but Faedo looks like he'll avoid a stint on the injured list. According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, manager A.J. Hinch revealed Tuesday that initial tests on Faedo's hip revealed no structural damage and only inflammation, so the rookie should be ready to pitch in the upcoming doubleheader if he experiences no setbacks during a bullpen session later this week.... Tigers' Alex Faedo: Diagnosed with hip soreness
Faedo left the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Guardians due to right hip soreness, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Faedo is up with the club as the 27th man for Monday's twin bill, so as Woodbery notes, he'll be sent back to Triple-A Toledo regardless of his health. He'll likely be re-evaluated in the coming days to determine whether he'll require a stint on the minor-league injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Leaves game with trainer
Faedo was removed from his start against the Guardians in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader due to an undisclosed injury, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. He allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings. The team evidently spotted something in Faedo's delivery that looked off, and after skipper A.J. Hinch watched him toss a few warmup pitches, he was lifted from the contest. The club should reveal more on his injury after further evaluation.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Starting second game of twin bill
Faedo will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader with the Guardians in Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The Tigers will turn to a pair of rookie right-handers for both ends of the twin bill, as Garrett Hill will make his MLB debut in Game 1 while Faedo gets the ball in the nightcap. Faedo turned in a 2.92 ERA in his first seven MLB starts, but he faltered badly over his most recent three outings (11.12 ERA, 2.29 WHIP, six walks in 11.1 innings) before being optioned to Triple-A on Friday.... Tigers' Alex Faedo: Optioned, slated for doubleheader
Faedo was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. With Michael Pineda (finger) returning to start Friday, Faedo will lose his spot on the active roster. The expectation is that Faedo will return to start one game of the Tigers' twin bill against the Guardians on Monday, though likely as the 27th man. Faedo has allowed 14 earned runs in his last three starts spanning 11.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Lasts four innings
Faedo allowed three runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts across four innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday. After going at least five innings in his first seven starts, Faedo has taken a step backward with three consecutive outings falling short of that mark. The fourth inning was his problem Saturday, as he gave up a two-run home run to David Peralta and an RBI double to Daulton Varsho. Faedo now has a 4.84 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB across 48.1 innings. Two off days next week should help the Tigers' understaffed rotation, with the rookie expected to make his next start during the weekend series at home versus the Royals.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Struggles continue Monday
Faedo (1-4) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits across 4.1 innings to take the loss Monday against the Red Sox. He walked two and struck out two. Pitching against this Boston lineup at Fenway Park is a tough task, and Faedo never really found his footing, as the Red Sox scored at least one run in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. That's two rough outings in a row for the righty, who's allowed 11 earned runs across his past 7.1 innings. Faedo has seen his ERA rise from 2.92 to 4.67 in the process. He's lined up to start again Saturday against the Diamondbacks, and given his recent results, fantasy managers should probably look elsewhere until Faedo shows signs of turning things around.... Tigers' Alex Faedo: Gets shelled for first time
Faedo (1-3) allowed seven runs on nine hits across three innings to take the loss Wednesday against the White Sox. He walked one and struck out five. All good things come to an end. Faedo had allowed two runs or fewer in each of his first seven MLB starts, resulting in a 2.92 ERA. However, his eighth career start was a buzzsaw, and the 26-year-old saw his ERA climb to 4.28 as a result. His FIP sat at 3.92 before Wednesday, so some regression seemed likely, but this was still a very disappointing outing. Faedo will look to get back on track in his next scheduled start Monday against a tricky Boston lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Possible waiver wire pickups
If you're looking for a short-term fill-in at starting pitcher, Alex Faedo fits the bill this week. He's coming off arguably his best start so far -- one in which his slider played like an elite swing-and-miss offering to bring his overall swinging-strike rate back to a respectable 11.3 percent. Its effectiveness comes and goes, creating reason for skepticism, but he has managed to keep runs off the board regardless and figures to do so against the White Sox and Rangers lineups this week.... Tigers' Alex Faedo: Sleeper pitchers for Week 11 (June 13-19)
Sometimes his slider has played like a big bat-misser, sometimes not, but Alex Faedo has managed to keep runs off the board either way. The trend is likely to continue against two suspect lineups (White Sox and Rangers) this week.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Alex Faedo: Pitches well again Wednesday
Faedo allowed one run on three hits across five innings but did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Pirates. He walked one and struck out seven. Faedo allowed a solo home run to Jack Suwinski in the fourth inning but was otherwise lights out Wednesday. It continued a great start to his MLB career, as the righty now has a 2.92 ERA across his first seven starts. He's gone at least five innings and allowed two runs or fewer in all of those appearances. Faedo has quickly entrenched himself in the Detroit rotation, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next scheduled start Monday against the White Sox.... See More ... See Less
