Vasquez did not factor into the decision in a Yankees win during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
The 24-year-old blanked Boston for three innings before fading in the fourth, exiting after 60 pitches (40 strikes). Vasquez was working in a tandem with Jhony Brito, who wound up getting the win, and the two rookie right-handers combined for what was effectively a quality start -- two earned runs over six innings between them. The duo's effectiveness could encourage the Yankees to keep them together in a rotation slot, though neither one might be available when New York next needs a starter Saturday in Pittsburgh. Vasquez has a 2.67 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB through his first 30.1 big-league innings.

Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Gets start for Game 1
Vasquez will start the first game of the Yankees' doubleheader Tuesday in Boston.
The doubleheader created a stretch of six games in five days for the Yankees, so Vasquez will at least temporarily step in to fill the void in the rotation. The Yankees will have a permanent spot available in the rotation after Luis Severino (oblique) was shut down for the season last week, with Vasquez and Jhony Brito representing the top options to replace Severino. Brito will presumably pick up a start later this week, and how he and Vasquez perform in their respective outings will likely determine which of the two ends up sticking around in a starting role when the rotation condenses to five men.

Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Candidate for starting role
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has mentioned Vasquez and Jhony Brito as possible replacements for Luis Severino (side) in the team's rotation, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Severino exited Friday's game against the Brewers with a left side injury, and he was placed on the 15-day IL on Saturday. That means New York now has a rotation spot to fill, and rookies Vasquez and Brito appear to be the leading candidates for the role. Vasquez has posted a solid 2.35 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 26.2 innings this season, though his 22:13 K:BB isn't ideal. He's pitched twice in relief since being recalled from the minors Sept. 1 but was mostly used as a starter during earlier stints with the Yankees this season.

Vasquez (2-2) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings.
After working in bulk relief in his previous outing, Vasquez got a traditional start Wednesday. The right-hander served up a two-run homer to Eddie Rosario in the second inning, which was enough to saddle him with the loss on a day when New York was shut out for the second straight game. Aside from the long ball, Vasquez gave up only one other hit, but he also walked three batters and needed 60 pitches to get through 3.1 frames. The Yankees' rotation is extremely thin right now with Nestor Cortes (shoulder) out at least another month, Carlos Rodon (hamstring) not eligible to return from the IL until next Tuesday and Domingo German (personal) out for the season, so Vasquez could be needed to fill a spot in the rotation -- either in bulk relief or as a traditional starter -- for the immediate future.
