  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Inefficient in no-decision

Vasquez allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Vasquez limited the damage to two runs in the third inning, both of which came on sacrifice flies. It was still an inefficient performance for the right-hander, who threw just 52 of 86 pitches for strikes while walking at least four batters for the fifth time this season. He's fallen short of the five-inning mark twice in his last three starts and has taken nine straight no-decisions, in part due to his inability to pitch deeper into games. Vasquez is at a 3.80 ERA despite a 1.39 WHIP and 50:46 K:BB over 94.2 innings through 19 starts this season. The Padres have games scheduled for 13 straight days coming out of the All-Star break, so Vasquez's spot in the rotation looks safe for the immediate future.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Strong start leads to no-decision

Vasquez settled for a no-decision Friday after working six strong innings while allowing two runs on three hits and three walks during Friday's 3-2 win over the Rangers. He struck out one. This is the eighth straight start that Vasquez has pitched to a no-decision. Part of it is because the 26-year-old has failed to go deep enough into the game to qualify for a win much of the time, but that wasn't the case Friday as he made it through six innings for just the second time since June 1. The right-hander struck out only one batter, but with a season high of five on the season, that's never really been his game. Vasquez is scheduled to make his next start at home against the Diamondbacks.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Struggles early in no-decision

Vasquez did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Reds, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Vasquez allowed three runs over the first two innings and exited with a 4-1 deficit before the Padres rallied for a comeback win. While the 26-year-old tossed seven frames in his previous start Sunday, he's failed to complete five innings in four of six June outings. He'll carry a 3.84 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and troubling 48:39 K:BB across 84.1 innings into a home matchup with the Rangers next weekend.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Quality start in no-decision

Vasquez took a no-decision in Sunday's 3-2 win versus the Royals, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out two. The San Diego righty collected his fifth quality start of the season, as he looked sharp in this 89-pitch outing. Vasquez completed a career-high seven frames, going toe to toe with Kansas City starter Seth Lugo. The only blemish on Vasquez's day was a two-run homer conceded to Salvador Perez in the sixth inning. The 26-year-old will carry a 3.60 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 45:37 K:BB through 80 innings into his next start, which currently lines up to be at Cincinnati next weekend.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Short outing Sunday

Vasquez allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Pirates on Sunday. Vasquez had gone six starts without allowing more than three runs, but that streak ended Sunday. He gave up home runs to Andrew McCutchen and Adam Frazier, which accounted for three of the four runs on his line. The long ball has been an issue lately, as Vasquez has given up seven homers over his last five starts. For the season, the right-hander has a 3.99 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 35:30 K:BB over 58.2 innings across 12 starts, numbers that suggest he has gotten fairly lucky so far. He is tentatively projected to make his next start at Milwaukee.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Limits damage to one run

Vasquez didn't factor into the decision against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and five walks while striking out three over five innings. It wasn't exactly smooth sailing for Vasquez, who allowed at least two baserunners in four of his five innings pitched, but he limited the damage to an RBI single from Oneil Cruz in the second frame. Vasquez has yielded one earned run or less in four of his seven starts this season, but he's also issued a league-leading 24 walks over 32.1 innings. He's lined up to face the Rockies on the road next weekend.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Suffers second straight loss

Vasquez (1-3) took the loss Sunday against the Rays, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out just one in 4.2 innings. Vasquez retired the Rays in order through the first two innings, but Taylor Walls opened up the scoring in the third with a solo blast, the first home run Vasquez has allowed all season. Two more runs were scored against him before he exited, largely in part due to the excellent baserunning by Chandler Simpson. Vasquez has managed to get by with a 4.28 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 10:19 K:BB in 27.1 innings thus far and has a chance to be a stream start against the Pirates in his upcoming outing this weekend.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Walks five in loss

Vasquez (0-1) took the loss against the Cubs on Friday, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and five walks with two strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Vasquez walked in a run in the first inning and couldn't make it out of the fifth after allowing two more runs in the frame. The 26-year-old struggled with his command, finding the zone on just 44 of 82 pitches and generating only four swinging strikes. He'll take a 1.69 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 5:9 K:BB through 10.2 innings into a road matchup with the Athletics next week.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Logs quality start in no-decision

Vasquez did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 1-0 win over Atlanta. He allowed four walks and four hits while striking out three across six scoreless innings. Although he wasn't as effective as counterpart Spencer Schwellenbach, Vasquez was able to induce double plays in the first and fourth inning and got out of another sticky situation in the sixth to keep Atlanta off the board. Vasquez was able to beat out Stephen Kolek for the final spot in the Padres' rotation in spring training, and the former's performance Saturday has validated that decision for the time being. Vasquez's next start is tentatively slated for next weekend against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Looks good in rotation audition

Vasquez pitched four innings against the Cubs in a Cactus League contest Friday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out four batters. Vasquez worked in a piggyback role in the exhibition matchup, entering the game in the sixth frame following Michael King's five scoreless innings. Vasquez finished off the contest by allowing Chicago to score just one run, which came on a solo homer by Moises Ballesteros. The appearance was presumably Vasquez's final one of the spring, in which case he'll finish the Cactus League slate with a 3.38 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB across eight innings. It remains to be seen what Vasquez's role will be to begin the campaign, but he's in the running for one of two open rotation spots along with Stephen Kolek and Kyle Hart.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Still in running for rotation spot

Vasquez may be one of two finalists for San Diego's fifth-starter role, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. For most of spring training, Vasquez, Matt Waldron, Kyle Hart and Stephen Kolek have been battling for the job as the Padres' fifth starter. However, Waldron is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day due to a recent oblique injury, and Hart may not be built up in time for the start of the regular season after having his progression temporarily paused due to the flu. That may leave Vasquez and Kolek as the final two candidates for the team's final rotation spot. Vasquez has a clear edge in terms of starting experience after starting in all 20 of his outings with the Padres last season, while Kolek came out of the bullpen for all 42 of his appearances. Vasquez also impressed with five scoreless frames in a Triple-A start Friday, but Kolek has opened eyes this spring by allowing just one run over nine frames and averaging a mere 12 pitches per inning.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Dazzles in spot start

Vasquez allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over six shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Vasquez didn't come away with a win since it took until the ninth inning for the Padres' offense to wake up. It was still an impressive outing for the right-hander, who was in the majors for the first time since Sept. 1. He concludes the regular season with a 4.87 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 62:29 K:BB over 98 innings across 20 starts this season. Despite the strong outing, Vasquez is unlikely to make the Padres' wild-card roster, and he could be optioned out Sunday for a fresh bullpen arm.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Lit up for nine runs Saturday

Vasquez (4-7) took the loss against the Rays on Saturday, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Vasquez was staked an early 2-0 lead but yielded a career-high nine earned runs despite allowing just one home run. Over his last 10 starts, the 25-year-old has allowed three earned runs or fewer eight times but also surrendered 15 total earned runs in two disastrous outings. On the season, he owns a 5.18 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 58:28 K:BB across 92 innings and lines up to face the Giants at home next weekend.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Yields two runs

Vasquez (4-6) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings Monday, striking out two and earning a win over St. Louis. Vasquez was called up to make his first MLB appearance since Aug. 8 and delivered a quality start. It was his first win since throwing six shutout frames against Washington on July 23. Vasquez has now made 18 starts with the Padres this season. He registered a 5.70 ERA through the first nine and a 3.40 ERA over his last nine. Vasquez will carry a 4.52 ERA into his next start, which is currently lined up to be in Tampa Bay.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Sent down to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Vasquez started Thursday's game against the Pirates, and although he's been a decent arm in the back end of the Padres' rotation, he'll exit the 26-man roster to give the team additional bullpen help in the form of Jhony Brito. Even if San Diego didn't require another bullpen arm, Vasquez was at risk of losing his starting spot due to Joe Musgrove (elbow) returning next week.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Stumbles in sixth inning

Vasquez did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out three. Vasquez cruised through five frames, holding the Pirates off the board while entering the sixth with a four-run lead. However, things unraveled as he faced the top of the Pirates' lineup for a third time, allowing four hits to the first five batters in the inning prior to being pulled. Three of those baserunners went on to score, and Vasquez was eventually left with a no-decision. It was the sixth time in his last eight starts Vasquez has tossed at least five innings while allowing three runs or fewer, posting a 3.42 ERA over 39 innings during that stretch. He'll take a 4.63 ERA and 1.51 WHIP into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place against these same Pirates when they make the return trip to San Diego.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Takes no-decision Friday

Vasquez allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Friday. Vasquez was responsible for Brendan Rodgers' solo home run in the second inning, but he left with the lead before the Padres' bullpen melted down in the sixth. Aside from a six-run fiasco versus Baltimore in his previous start, Vasquez has been good lately -- he's allowed two runs or fewer in six of his last seven outings. He's pitched to a 4.62 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 50:21 K:BB through 76 innings over 16 starts on the year. The right-hander's next start is projected to be at Miami, though he would be on regular rest for the last two games in next week's earlier series at Pittsburgh if Michael King (calf) doesn't recover as quickly as expected following his exit from his start last Saturday in Baltimore.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: X-rays negative

X-rays on Vasquez's right forearm came back negative after he was removed from Friday's game versus Boston, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. A 98-mph line drive off the bat of Ceddanne Rafaela struck Vasquez's arm in the fifth inning, forcing him to leave the game after four-plus innings of one-run ball. The 25-year-old said after the game that he's dealing with a bit of swelling, but he seemed optimistic about his chances to make his next start.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Struck by comebacker, exits early

Vasquez was removed from his start Friday against the Red Sox after getting hit in the right forearm by a comebacker, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Vasquez took a 98 mph line drive off his forearm during the fifth inning of Friday's contest, and he was taken out of the game after conferring with a trainer. He'll be sent for imaging, and the Padres should have an update on the severity of his injury in the near future. The 25-year-old righty had allowed one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out one batter over four innings before being taken out of the game.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Shuts out Brewers over five frames

Vasquez (2-4) earned the win over the Brewers on Saturday, allowing five hits and three walks over five shutout innings while striking out three. Vasquez struggled with his command early on, issuing walks to three of the first six batters he faced. However, the right-hander would not walk another batter from that point on as he held the Brewers' lineup scoreless over five frames. It was a nice bounceback effort for Vasquez after he surrendered a season-high six runs in his last start. He's now gone at least six innings in five of his last six outings. On the downside, he also issued a season-high three walks in the contest and has walked multiple batters in three consecutive starts.
