With Chad Wallach (concussion) back from the 7-day injured list, the Angels no longer had a need for Okey as an extra catcher. The 28-year-old struck out in his only two plate appearances during his brief stint with the big club.

Angels' Chris Okey: Called up to majors
The Angels purchased Okey's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
Okey will join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for fellow catcher Chad Wallach (concussion/neck), who was placed on the 7-day injured list. Okey will be in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Astros and handle catching duties with Shohei Ohtani on the mound. Expect Matt Thaiss to serve as the Angels' primary backstop until either Wallach or Max Stassi (personal/hip) returns from the IL.

The Reds released Okey on Aug. 13.
Okey saw action in seven big-league games with the Reds earlier this season, but even with Tyler Stephenson (collarbone) and Aramis Garcia (finger) out with long-term injuries, the organization didn't elect to keep Okey around as catching depth. Before getting released, Okey had been playing at Triple-A Louisville, where he slashed .220/.279/.356 across 129 plate appearances.

Okey was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Okey has served as Cincinnati's No. 2 catcher over the past few weeks, and he'll head back to the minors after going 2-for-12 with three runs and five strikeouts in seven games. Michael Papierski was recalled in a corresponding move and will operate as the backup catcher until Tyler Stephenson (thumb) returns from the injured list.

The 27-year-old was called up for his first taste of the majors with Tyler Stephenson heading to the injured list with a fractured thumb. Okey has a .265/.324/.441 slash line in 24 games for Triple-A Louisville this season, and he should serve as the Reds' secondary option at catcher behind Aramis Garcia while Stephenson is sidelined.

Reds' Chris Okey: Homers in return from DL
Okey (wrist) came off the disabled list Thursday for High-A Daytona, going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk at Fort Myers.
Wrist injuries have plagued him early on in his career, so we don't have a great gauge for his offensive upside. He has a solid reputation as a defender behind the dish and has pedigree (43rd overall pick in 2016), so if he can get going offensively, he could become a player to watch in deeper two-catcher dynasty leagues.

Reds' Chris Okey: On DL at High-A
Okey (wrist) will open the year on the disabled list at High-A Daytona, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports.
He tried to play through left hand and wrist injuries last season, which led to horrific numbers at High-A (.185/.266/.250 slash line). This year it's his right wrist that is acting up. He is expected to be ready for game action in a few weeks.

Reds' Chris Okey: Slow progress at High-A
Okey went 3-for-4 with a double Tuesday night at High-A Daytona, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Despite the big game Tuesday, he is hitting just .170/.254/.264 there.
We've often seen catchers slow to develop at the plate, but the second-round draft pick out of Clemson last year has shown some disturbing signs. He had a 29 percent strikeout rate at Low-A Dayton last year, and that rate is up to 35.6 percent this year with the level bump. While Okey isn't known as a high-ceiling offensive player, his defensive tools won't get him to the big leagues if he can't master the strike zone at lower levels of the minors.
