Chafin earned a save over the Rockies on Monday, retiring the only batter he faced via strikeout. Drey Jameson pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in relief and nearly closed the game, but Chafin was summoned to record the final out after Randal Grichuk stroked a two-out single in the ninth. Chafin got Elehuris Montero to go down swinging on a slider to finish off the victory and earn his eighth save. The lefty reliever has nabbed four saves in May and appears to be sharing the closer role with Miguel Castro, who also has four saves this month.... See More ... See Less

Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Not available for save
Chafin did not pitch in Wednesday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Phillies. The Diamondbacks had a save situation -- entering the ninth inning up 5-3 -- but none of Chafin, Miguel Castro or Kyle Nelson were available after throwing three of the last four days. Jose Ruiz tried to close the door but gave up a two-run home run to Trea Turner before taking the loss in the 10th.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Preserves lead
Chafin allowed one hit over two-thirds of an inning to record a hold in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Phillies. After Arizona took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, manager Torey Lovullo went with the lefty Chapin to face the top of Philadelphia's order, which included a pair of lefty hitters. Chafin and Scott McGough got the Diamondbacks through unscathed, setting up a save for Miguel Castro, who has recently become a regular in the closer mix. Matchups for Arizona appear to dictate late-game usage patterns, which includes decisions on which pitcher will throw the eighth inning, so fantasy managers can expect Chafin and Castro to share the save chances for now.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Slams door for save
Chafin issued one walk in a scoreless inning Monday. He struck out three batters and earned a save against the Phillies. Chafin worked around a two-out walk to secure the 6-3 victory for Arizona. It was his first save since May 15, while Miguel Castro recorded two outs in the seventh inning. Chafin has tossed five straight shutout frames, lowering his ERA to 3.38 with a 29:6 K:BB.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Notches sixth save
Chafin threw a perfect inning to earn a save over Oakland on Monday. Chafin needed just 10 pitches to close out the 5-2 win Monday. It was his first save chance since May 6, when he coughed up three runs without recording an out. He lowered his ERA to 3.94 with a 24:5 K:BB through 16 innings. Chafin and Miguel Castro, who worked the eighth inning Monday, appear to be the top arms in Arizona's bullpen at the moment.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Works eighth inning again
Chafin got the final out of the eighth inning in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Giants. Starter Zac Gallen cruised through 7.2 innings before giving up a run-producing double on his 97th pitch. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo brought in Chafin for the left-handed hitting LaMonte Wade to escape the inning. The appearance in the eighth inning was the second straight for Chafin, who's been the Diamondbacks' primary closer but has hit a rough patch over the last week. The left-hander will continue to pitch in high-leverage situations, but Chafin may not be the automatic ninth-inning option for now.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Enters tied game, takes loss
Chafin (2-1) was the losing pitcher in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to Miami. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out two over one-plus innings. Chafin was brought into a non-save situation in the eighth inning -- perhaps because the left-hander last pitched Saturday -- and had a clean inning before giving up a leadoff double in the ninth. That runner eventually came around to score. It was his second straight outing that resulted in an adverse result. The last time out, Chafin allowed four hits and three runs in a blown save.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Blows save
Chafin allowed three runs and an inherited runner to score on four hits and picked up a blown save in Saturday's 8-7 win over Washington. Chafin was part of a bullpen implosion that let a 6-2 lead entering the ninth inning slip away. Fortunately for Arizona's closer, Chafin avoided the loss when his teammates mounted their own comeback in the bottom of the frame. The left-hander, who's converted five of seven save chances, has pitched better (2.50 SIERA, 2.36 xFIP) than his 4.26 ERA suggests.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Notches fifth save
Chafin picked up the save in Friday's 3-1 victory over Washington. He struck out two over a perfect inning. Chafin has now tossed scoreless outings in 12 of his 13 appearances this year. The southpaw sports a 1.03 WHIP on the season, and he is averaging nearly two strikeouts per inning (21 K's over 12.2 innings). The 32-year-old is a more than serviceable closer option for fantasy managers.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Not labeled closer
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo refrained from calling Chafin the team's closer Friday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Despite the continued use of Chafin in save situations, Lovullo would only go as far as saying the reliever was "maybe" his top option. The manager said he might pivot away from Chafin if a situation dictates it. "I don't have a problem running him out there right-left-right," Lovullo said. "But if it's a wall of righties and it's a good matchup for a right-handed pitcher, I would probably go in a different direction." Chafin has converted four of five opportunities so far.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Notches fourth save
Chafin walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his fourth save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Royals. The lefty continued his impressive start to the season, as Chafin has been scored upon in only one of his first 12 appearances so far. That one outing did result in his only blown save in five chances, but he still appears to be solidifying his hold on the closer role for Arizona, posting a 2.61 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB through 10.1 innings.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Blows save but wins
Chafin (2-0) allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four over 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win over Kansas City on Monday. Chafin entered with one out and two runners on in the bottom of eighth inning and allowed a game-tying single to Kyle Isbel. That marked his first blown save in four opportunities, but he was able to walk away with the win in the ninth when Nick Ahmed's fielder's choice plated the winning run. After a dominant stretch to open the season, Chafin's run into a rough patch, allowing three runs on five hits (one home run) and two walks over his last 2.1 innings (three games).... See More ... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Rocked for first time
Chafin allowed three runs on two hits and one walk over a third of an inning in Tuesday's 8-7 win over St. Louis. Chafin was brought in to finish off the Cardinals in a non-save situation, then created a save opportunity for Miguel Castro, who finished the game. The outing was the first blemish for Chafin, who was 3-for-3 in save chances and had not allowed a run in seven innings prior to Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Possible waiver wire pickups
It seems like the Diamondbacks have already turned the page on Scott McGough and settled on Andrew Chafin as their closer. The left-hander struck out the side for his second save Monday, with McGough working the eighth, and he has yet to allow even one hit this year. Because he's the team's only high-leverage lefty, it's possible the Diamondbacks will deploy Chafin in a more situational role, with McGough and maybe even Miguel Castro remaining in the mix for saves. But if there's one Diamondbacks reliever to roster right now, it's clearly Chafin.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Picks up second save
Chafin picked up the save in Monday's 3-0 win over the Brewers by striking out the side during a perfect ninth inning. Chafin came on in the ninth inning with a three-run lead and proceeded to strike out Joey Wiemer, Christian Yelich and Willy Adames en route to his second save of the season. The left-hander has yet to allow a run across five appearances (4.1 innings) while striking out seven versus just two walks. Scott McGough, who blew a save last week, has operated in hold situations in each of his past two appearances, so it appears Chafin has the early edge in Arizona's closing competition.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Fans two in ninth inning
Chafin struck out two over 0.2 innings in the ninth inning of a 6-3 win over the Dodgers on Friday. He walked one. Chafin walked Freddie Freeman after coming into the game with one out, but he was able to strike out J.D. Martinez and Max Muncy swinging to end the game, failing to record his second save of the year only because he didn't pitch the requisite one inning. The left-hander has not allowed an earned run in four appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Snags win in finale
Chafin (1-0) allowed one walk and struck out two over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning, picking up the win in Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Dodgers. Chafin's work bridged the bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth innings in his second late-game appearance in as many outings. After he earned the save Friday, Chafin gave way to Scott McGough on Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Records save Friday
Chafin worked a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his first save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers. Scott McGough was brought in to finish out the eighth inning and might have remained in the game for the save chance had he pitched well, but instead he walked two batters and threw only four of his 13 pitches for strikes while recording only one out. As a result, manager Torey Lovullo handed the ball to Chafin in the ninth to face the top of the Dodgers' order, and the southpaw delivered. McGough may have just had some butterflies as he made his first big-league appearance since 2015, and the closer picture in Arizona remains far from clear, but it looks as though Chafin's expected high-leverage role will include some save chances.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Makes appearance Wednesday
Chafin (groin) struck out a batter and allowed a hit over a scoreless inning of relief Tuesday in the Diamondbacks' 7-6 loss to the Giants in Cactus League play. Chafin experienced some groin tightness late last week, but he required only a few days off to overcome the issue before he re-entered the Diamondbacks' spring pitching schedule. Assuming the groin injury doesn't crop up again, Chafin will head into Opening Day in position for a high-leverage role out of the Arizona bullpen, with the southpaw potentially factoring into the mix for save chances when the Diamondbacks face lefty-heavy lineups in the late innings. Before signing with the Diamondbacks in free agency this winter, Chafin was a major bright spot for a 96-loss Tigers squad in 2022, logging a 2.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 67:19 K:BB across 57.1 innings.... Diamondbacks' Andrew Chafin: Throws live BP
Chafin (groin) threw a live batting practice session Saturday. Chafin was shut down for several days with a groin injury. The Diamondbacks are expected to take a cautious approach with the reliever, who opened the 2022 season on the injured list with a similar injury.... See More ... See Less
