The Cardinals designated Sanchez for assignment Wednesday.
Sanchez was moved off the 40-man roster to clear a spot for Jack Flaherty (shoulder), who was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Pirates. St. Louis is now left with three other catchers (Yadier Molina, Andrew Knizner and Ivan Herrera) on its 40-man roster.
