Caufield's season was already over, so this is just a paper move for Montreal. The 22-year-old scored a career-high 26 goals in 46 games this season and should be ready for the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

Canadiens' Cole Caufield: Separates shoulder twice
Caufield separated his shoulder twice this season, once before Christmas versus Dallas and finally versus Nashville on Jan. 12, Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Caufield managed to play five more games after the Predators contest before the Canadiens shut him down for the season. He was able to pop his shoulder back into place both times, but it was eventually determined that Caufield would require season-ending surgery. The surgery will occur Feb. 1 as final details are still being sorted out. Caufield had already set a career high in goals with 26 and had 36 points in 46 games. He is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in September.

Canadiens' Cole Caufield: Done for rest of season

This is horrible news for Caufield and the Canadiens, as he had already set a career high in goals with 26 in just 46 games this campaign. The 22-year-old winger will finish the season with 36 points and 158 shots on goal, as he was establishing himself as a star for the Habs. Caufield will need surgery on his right shoulder, but he's expected to be ready for the start of training camp in September barring any major setbacks.

Caufield picked up an assist on Kirby Dach's power-play tally in the first period before scoring the game-winning goal midway through the third. Both goals came on one-timers that beat Yaroslav Askarov, who was making his first NHL start and got a rude introduction to the speed of the game at its highest level. Caufield scored a goal in a 5-4 win Saturday over the Blues.
Caufield gave Montreal a 3-2 lead in the first minute of the third when he lifted a backhand over Jordan Binnington's right arm. It was Caufield's 50th goal as a member of the Canadiens and it came in his 117th game. He's the fourth-fastest Montreal player to hit that mark, behind greats Maurice Richard (76 games), Jean Beliveau (105) and Bernie Geoffrion (114).
