Carlsson signed a three-year contract with Vaxjo HC of the Swedish Hockey League on Friday. Carlsson had two assists in six games with Washington during the 2022-23 regular season. He also chipped in with a goal and 16 points in 59 AHL games with Hershey last season. Carlsson did not receive a qualifying offer from Washington in June, making him an unrestricted free agent. Carlsson, who was drafted in the first round (29th overall) in 2015, was never able to establish himself in the NHL, playing only 81 games over seven seasons.... See More ... See Less

Gabriel Carlsson: Doesn't receive qualifying offer
Carlsson will become an unrestricted free agent Saturday because the Capitals didn't extend him a qualifying offer, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports. Carlsson had two assists in six games with Washington in 2022-23. He also recorded a goal and 15 points in 59 AHL outings with Hershey.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Gabriel Carlsson: Heads back to minors
Carlsson was returned to AHL Hershey on Thursday. Carlsson has two assists in six appearances with Washington this season. The 26-year-old defenseman also has a goal and 13 points in 47 contests with Hershey in 2022-23. His demotion corresponds with the expected return of John Carlson (fractured skull) for Thursday's game against Chicago.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Gabriel Carlsson: Surfaces on waivers
The Capitals placed Carlsson on waivers Sunday, per CapFriendly. Carlsson signed a two-way deal this offseason and it looks like he'll begin the year with AHL Hershey. The 29-year-old blueliner has 16 points in 75 career NHL contests.... See More ... See Less -
Capitals' Gabriel Carlsson: Links up with Caps
Carlsson signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Capitals on Wednesday. Carlsson put up nine points in 38 games with the Blue Jackets last season. The 25-year-old defenseman could have a chance to compete for a third-pairing spot in training camp, but the Capitals' defensive depth is solid, and he may need to spend some time at AHL Hershey.... Gabriel Carlsson: Cut loose by Columbus
Carlsson wasn't qualified by the Blue Jackets, so he'll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent Wednesday, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports. Carlsson served as a rotational, bottom-pairing option for Columbus in 2021-22, notching nine points while averaging just 12:16 of ice time through 38 appearances. He may have to settle for a two-way contract as a UFA this summer.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Lights lamp in return to lineup
Carlsson scored his second goal of the season in Thursday's win over the Panthers. The 25-year-old blueliner gave the Blue Jackets a 3-1 lead early in the third period with a blast from the faceoff circle to the right of Jonas Johansson. Carlsson hadn't drawn into the lineup since Jan. 31, but with Zach Werenski (upper body) sidelined, Carlsson got a look on the bottom pairing. On the season, he's managed five points in 19 games with 18 hits, 18 blocked shots and a plus-4 rating.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Stuck in press box
Carlsson has been in the lineup just once in the last 10 games. He's been healthy during that time, but so has the rest of the Blue Jackets' blue line, and coach Brad Larsen has preferred deploying Dean Kukan and Gavin Bayreuther in depth roles lately. On the season, Carlsson has one goal and four points in 17 games with 14 hits, 13 blocked shots and a plus-1 rating.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Returns from protocols
Carlsson (COVID-19 protocols) was activated from the league's COVID-19 protocols Monday. Even with his return to practice, Carlsson is far from a lock for the lineup when the Jackets return to action versus Nashville on Thursday. Still, the blueliner needs to play in just two more games to set a new career high at the NHL level but likely has a point ceiling in the 10-15 range.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Enters COVID-19 protocols
Carlsson was placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocols Sunday, Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports. Carlsson will need to submit two negative COVID-19 rests before rejoining the Blue Jackets, so he'll miss Monday's matchup with Buffalo at a minimum. Jake Christiansen will likely get the first crack at replacing Carlsson in the lineup versus the Sabres.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Opens scoring Saturday
Carlsson potted a goal on two shots in a 4-2 win over Colorado on Saturday. Jakub Voracek fed Carlsson creeping in from the point on the back side, and Carlsson snapped a shot from the left circle that beat Colorado goaltender Darcy Kuemper to open the scoring in the first period. It was the first goal of the year for Carlsson and just his second tally in 42 career games.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Records helper Wednesday
Carlsson recorded an assist in Wednesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Avalanche. Carlsson set up the second of Cole Sillinger's goals in the third period. The helper was Carlsson's first point in four games this season. He's added five hits, four blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating. The Swede is unlikely to play more than a rotational role on the third pairing, so he can be left off fantasy rosters.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Recalled by big club
Carlsson was recalled by the Blue Jackets on Wednesday. Carlsson will likely be on hand as an extra defenseman for Thursday's game versus the Islanders. The 24-year-old blueliner picked up four points through 14 games with the Blue Jackets last season.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Lands on waivers
Carlsson was placed on waivers Sunday, per CBS Sports. Carlsson skated in 14 games with the Blue Jackets last season, tallying a goal and four points. The 24-year-old blueliner could rejoin the big club as an injury replacement at some point this season.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Manages assist
Carlsson recorded an assist in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Stars. Carlsson went four games without a point after opening his campaign with a goal and an assist in his first two outings. The Swede has added seven shots on net and a plus-2 rating in seven contests. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect much from the 24-year-old blueliner, although he appears to have solidified his spot in the lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: First NHL goal in season debut
Carlsson scored a goal on three shots in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Predators. Recalled from the taxi squad and inserted into the lineup earlier in the day, Carlsson collected his first career goal when he converted an Oliver Bjorkstrand cross-ice feed to tie the game in the second period. The 24-year-old Carlsson had tallied just three assists through his first 22 NHL games over parts of four seasons.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Recalled for Saturday's game
Carlsson was recalled from Columbus' taxi squad Saturday and will join the lineup, Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports. David Savard (illness) was scratched, creating the need for more reinforcements on a Jackets blue line that was already missing Zach Werenski (lower body). Carlsson has yet to see any action at the NHL level this season.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Drops to minors
Carlsson cleared waivers Monday and was assigned to AHL Cleveland. The 2015 first-round pick (29th overall) didn't suit up for any of the Blue Jackets' first 16 games. Carlsson will be a fixture in the lineup for AHL Cleveland, and top-four minutes will be better for his development.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Hits waivers
Carlsson was waived by the Blue Jackets on Saturday, Sportsnet's Chris Johnston reports. Carlsson didn't suit up in any of the first 16 games of the season. In turn, he'll be subject to waivers. If he goes unclaimed, the team can place the 24-year-old on the taxi squad. The Swedish defenseman played just six games with the big club last year, as he spent most of his time in the minors, recording 12 points over 41 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jackets' Gabriel Carlsson: Set to return Friday
Carlsson (undisclosed) is expected to join the Blue Jackets' practice Friday, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports. Carlsson missed the first few days of training camp, although the generic "unfit to practice" line was the only explanation for his absence. Missing time with an already short stay in camp could hurt Carlsson's chances of earning a third-pairing job to start the 2020-21 campaign. The 24-year-old blueliner, a first-round pick from 2015, is primarily battling with Dean Kukan, Scott Harrington and Michael Del Zotto for the job.... See More ... See Less
