  • Maple Leafs' Chris Tanev: Grabs six-year deal

Tanev (ankle) signed a six-year, $27 million contract with Toronto on Monday.

Tanev will head home to his native Toronto on a deal that almost certainly will be his last considering he is 34 years old. The veteran blueliner split last season between the Flames and Stars, making a combined 75 regular-season appearances in which he garnered two goals, 17 assists and 207 blocked shots. Offensively, Tanev won't offer much to the Maple Leafs or fantasy managers but he should be a mainstay in the lineup, playing around 20 minutes per night.

  • Chris Tanev: Negotiating rights dealt

Tanev's (ankle) negotiating rights were acquired by the Maple Leafs from the Stars on Saturday in exchange for Max Ellis and a 2026 seventh-round pick.

Tanev is set to become an unrestricted free agent Monday, but this will give Toronto an exclusive window to negotiate a contract with him before that date. The 34-year-old defenseman is coming off a four-year, $18 million contract. He had two goals, 19 points, a plus-22 rating, 24 PIM, 45 hits and 207 blocked shots in 75 regular-season outings between Calgary and Dallas while averaging 19:41 of ice time in 2023-24. He was also leaned on heavily during the Stars' 2024 playoff run, averaging 22:17 while recording two assists, a plus-7 rating, six PIM, 30 hits and 73 blocks across 19 contests. The blueliner is recovering from a tendon injury, but he didn't miss any time during the postseason and will likely be fine for the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Dealing with tendon injury

Tanev (ankle) is recovering from a tendon injury, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports Friday.

Tanev had two goals, 19 points, 24 PIM, 45 hits and 207 blocks in 75 regular-season outings between Calgary and Dallas in 2023-24. He also recorded two assists, 30 hits and 73 blocks across 19 playoff contests with the Stars. He played in two contests after suffering the injury in Game 4 versus Edmonton, so he should be fine for the start of the 2024-25 campaign. The 34-year-old is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in July.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Chips in with helper

Tanev logged an assist, four hits and two PIM in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Oilers in Game 6.

Tanev avoided missing time after suffering an injury in Game 4 versus the Oilers. The defenseman did his job this postseason, picking up two assists to go with 73 blocked shots, 31 hits and a plus-7 rating over 19 playoff contests. Even at 34 years old, Tanev should have a healthy market as a steady and reliable shutdown defenseman if he makes it to free agency July 1.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Good to go Friday

Tanev (lower body) will play Friday in Game 5 against the Oilers, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

Tanev was injured after blocking a shot in Game 4 on Wednesday but won't miss any additional time. He's tallied just one assist through 17 appearances this postseason.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Game-time decision Friday

Tanev (lower body) will be a game-time decision for Game 5 versus Edmonton on Friday, though coach Peter DeBoer is optimistic that Tanev (lower body) will play, Tracey Myers of NHL.com reports.

Tanev was injured blocking a shot Wednesday in the second period and was unable to return. Tanev is a stud defensively and if he is unable to go, the Stars will need to fill a big hole on the blue line. Lian Bichsel is poised to make his NHL debut if Tanev is unable to go.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Departs Wednesday's game

Tanev (lower body) did not return to Wednesday's Game 4 after blocking a shot in the second period.

The Stars initially labeled Tanev as questionable to return, but his inability to get back on the ice in this contest is not a positive sign. The 34-year-old defenseman is a key part of the Stars' defensive structure, so a potential absence for Friday's Game 5 or beyond could spell trouble for the team. If Tanev is unable to play, Nils Lundkvist is the most likely player to draw into the lineup, though he has seen very sheltered minutes when he's played during the postseason.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Chips in with helper

Tanev logged an assist, two hits and four blocked shots in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Avalanche in Game 2.

Tanev helped out on Esa Lindell's empty-net goal. The assist snapped an 11-game point drought for Tanev, who continues to be a defensive force with little scoring upside during the postseason. He's posted 35 blocked shots, 12 hits, eight shots on net and a plus-5 rating through nine playoff outings following a 19-point regular season across 75 games for Dallas and Calgary.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Assist streak at three games

Tanev notched an assist, two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Sabres.

Tanev had a shot attempt tipped in by Joe Pavelski in the second period, and that goal stood as the game-winner. This is the third straight game with an assist for Tanev, who has remained steady as ever on defense since he was traded from the Flames to the Stars. The blueliner has five points and a plus-7 rating over 16 contests with Dallas, and he's up to 19 points, 52 shots on net, 201 blocked shots and a plus-23 rating through 72 outings this season.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Draws another helper

Tanev notched an assist, three hits and two blocked shots in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Avalanche.

Tanev has helpers in back-to-back contests while adding seven blocks in that span. The 34-year-old defenseman is up to 18 points, 52 shots on net, 199 blocks, 39 hits and a plus-21 rating over 71 appearances between the Stars and the Flames this season. Tanev should continue to see heavy defensive usage in a top-four role.

Tanev notched an assist, two shots on goal and five blocked shots in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Blackhawks.

The 34-year-old Tanev has three points over 14 contests with the Stars since he was traded from the Flames. He's up to 17 points, 51 shots on net, 197 blocked shots and a plus-20 rating through 70 games this season.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Should be good to go

Tanev (upper body) practiced fully Tuesday and is expected to be available for Wednesday's matchup with Edmonton, Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Tanev was evaluated for an injury after exiting Saturday's win over Seattle early, but it appears whatever forced him from that contest wasn't overly serious. The 34-year-old vet has picked up two points through 12 games since joining the Stars in a trade with the Flames.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Being evaluated for injury

Tanev (upper body) wasn't able to complete Saturday's 3-0 win over Seattle, Darren Brown of NHL.com reports.

Adam Larsson was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing Tanev early in the third period. The 34-year-old Tanev played four shifts following the hit before being forced to leave the game for good. He will be evaluated Sunday to determine his status. Dallas is off until Wednesday against Edmonton, so Tanev has some time to recover.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Posts helper in win

Tanev notched an assist and two PIM in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Coyotes.

Tanev has picked up two points over seven outings with the Stars since he was traded from the Flames in late February. The defenseman continues to hold a top-four role and could see heavier usage as long as Jani Hakanpaa (lower body) is out. Tanev has 16 points, a plus-19 rating, 179 blocked shots and 48 shots on net through 63 appearances this season.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Tallies in Friday's win

Tanev scored a goal, blocked two shots, added two PIM and went plus-2 in Friday's 6-2 win over the Ducks.

The 34-year-old defenseman was able to get his first goal and point as a Star in his second game with the team. Tanev has already matched his goal total from 56 contests with the Flames to begin the year. He's up to 15 points, 44 shots on net, 174 blocked shots and a plus-19 rating over 58 appearances. Tanev is likely to fill a defense-focused top-four role in Dallas.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Ready for Dallas debut

Tanev is expected to be in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Sharks.

Tanev has apparently gotten his immigration paperwork settled and will be eligible to play Tuesday. Expect the defenseman to see a heavy workload defensively with no power-play time. The 34-year-old had 14 points and 171 blocked shots over 56 contests before the Flames traded him to the Stars last Wednesday.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Game-time decision Tuesday

Tanev (not injury related) will be a game-time decision Tuesday against the Sharks, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

Tanev hasn't made his Dallas debut yet due to a work visa issue but could meet up with the team to play in Tuesday's contest. He recorded 14 points and 171 blocked shots in 56 games with Calgary before being traded to the Stars on Wednesday.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Questionable for Saturday

Tanev is working through his visa issues, raising doubts regarding his availability versus San Jose on Saturday, Stars radio analyst Bruce LeVine reports.

According to general manager Jim Nill, Tanev should be available and ready to play against the Sharks on Tuesday at the latest, though the situation remains fluid. During his time in Calgary this season, the veteran blueliner generated one goal on 43 shots and 13 assists while averaging 19:50 of ice time through 56 contests. Once available to play, Tanev figures to bump either Joel Hanley or Jani Hakanpaa from the lineup.

  • Stars' Chris Tanev: Heading to Lone Star State

Tanev was traded from the Flames to the Stars via the Devils on Wednesday in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick, a conditional 2026 third-round pick and Artyom Grushnikov, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports.

The Flames will retain 50 percent of Tanev's remaining salary and the Devils will retain 25 percent more to help the Stars fit him in after the three-team trade. Tanev's role will not change much from switching teams -- he's a top-four defenseman who's sound in his own zone. Tanev is second in the NHL with 171 blocked shots, but he also has just 14 points through 56 outings, so his fantasy value remains limited to deeper formats. Per Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News, Tanev won't play Thursday versus the Jets, but he could be available by Saturday's game versus the Sharks.

  • Flames' Chris Tanev: Two helpers Tuesday

Tanev recorded a pair of assists in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Kings.

Tanev set up Blake Coleman's tally in the second period before grabbing a second assist on Mikael Backlund's empty-netter in the third. It's just the second multi-point game of the season for Tanev, who'd gone scoreless in four games since he recorded a pair of helpers Feb. 15 against San Jose. While Tanev won't contribute much offensively, he's been a solid defensive presence on Calgary's top pairing. He's up to 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) with 171 blocked shots and a plus-16 rating through 56 games this year.
