Rivers missed the entirety of the 2022 season after suffering a biceps injury in August but is now back on the field. The 29-year-old will likely compete for a spot as a reserve edge rusher behind starters Will Anderson and Jerry Hughes.

Rivers (biceps) was placed on the Texans' injured reserve Tuesday.
Rivers suffered a torn biceps during Houston's preseason finale last Thursday, and he will likely now be forced to sit out the entirety of the 2022 regular season, unless he can reach an injury settlement from the team. The 28-year-old defensive end recorded nine tackles and one sack over five games with the Texans last year.

Contrary to initial reports, Rivers has been diagnosed with a serious injury and could possibly miss the entire 2022 season. It's a tough break for the 2017 third-round pick, who had an excellent preseason and was vying for a roster spot.

Rivers suffered a biceps injury in the Texans' preseason finale against the 49ers,Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
The defensive end injured his bicep in Houston's 17-0 victory but Rivers believes the injury isn't serious and he should be good moving forward. The former 2017 third-round pick could see a depth role with the Texans once again this season after he recovers from his injury.

Texans' Derek Rivers: Records two sacks
Rivers recorded two sacks in Saturday's 17-13 preseason win over the Saints.
One of the sacks came on third down late in the first half and forced the Saints to punt from the end zone. That led to a scoring opportunity -- a missed long-distance field-goal attempt. Houston head coach Lovie Smith had a couple of unprompted shoutouts for the reserve defensive end during the post-game press conference. "You look at him, he's our profile that we're looking for on the outside. If you put defensive end behind your name, you need to be able to rush the passer here. He showed up throughout. That's what he's been doing in training camp," the coach said. Rivers improved his stock after the opener and could be part of the set of linemen added to the final roster.

Rivers did test positive for COVID on Monday, Aaron Wilson of Houston Sports Talk 790 AM reports. With fellow defensive lineman Jacob Martin and Jonathan Greenard also on the COVID list, the Texans could need to reach to the bottom of their defensive line depth chart to compete Sunday against the Chargers.

Rivers agreed to a contract with the Texans on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
GM Nick Caserio is familiar with Rivers from their days with the Patriots, and he's bringing New England's 2017 third-round pick to Houston. Rivers finished last season with the Rams after being cut by New England. He has 2.5 sacks in 19 career NFL games.
