Veteran tackle Tony Ugoh decided to retire after Tuesday's walk-through, five days after signing with the Chiefs, according to Chiefs' insider Josh Looney.
Ugoh was expected to provide depth at both tackle positions and was the only reserve tackle in camp with any NFL experience. With Ugoh out of the equation, the Chiefs will rely on third-round pick Donald Stephenson and second-year tackle David Mims to back up Branden Albert and Eric Winston. Second-round pick Jeff Allen could also factor in, but Allen is more likely to be the team's top backup at left guard.
Stephenson filled in for Albert on Sunday when Albert had to sit out because of a three-day acclimation period that's part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Romeo Crennel said Albert would practice on Monday.
With Ugoh off the roster, the Chiefs are back to 89 players and could be searching for another veteran lineman.
Crennel also announced on Monday that the team had added veteran linebacker Edgar Jones. Jones is at camp and should practice on Monday. Jones, who played five seasons with Baltimore, filled the vacancy on the roster left by saftey Kyle McCarthy. McCarthy hurt his knee on Saturday and will need surgery. The Chiefs waived McCarthy, who Crennel said the team should be able to place on injured reserved if he clears waivers.
Siler out with sore ankle
Crennel said linebacker Brandon Siler would sit out practice on Monday to rest a sore ankle. Siler missed all of last year with a torn Achilles.
