For the first time in his career Josh Winder didn't start a game in 2023 splitting time between the majors and at Triple-A St. Paul. Winder compiled a 4.15 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and had a 7.27 K/9 in 34.2 innings with the twins, while things were worse at Triple-A pitching to a 6.16 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in 30.2 innings. The 27-year-old seems to have lost any hope at a rotation spot after starting 11 games for the Twins in 2022. Winder should break camp out of the bullpen, but his fantasy upside is lacking with no path to a high leverage role, likely being used in long relief.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Placed on 60-day IL

The Twins placed Winder (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list on Monday. Winder's move to the IL is in correspondence with the Twins acquiring outfielder Manuel Margot, infielder Rayne Doncon and cash considerations from the Dodgers in exchange for Noah Miller. Winder has been slowly building his way back from a right scapula stress fracture he sustained late in 2023, and he will now be forced to sit out for the first portion of 2024. Before his injury last season, Winder appeared in 19 games in the majors and posted a 2-1 record with a 4.15 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Building up slowly in camp

Winder is behind the Twins' other pitchers for the start of spring training while he builds back up from a right scapula stress fracture he suffered late in the 2023 season, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Winder wasn't placed on the injured list at any point due to the stress fracture, which wasn't detected until he underwent an MRI in October, per Park. After taking some extra time to rest up during the offseason, Winder seems to have moved past the injury, but he was still limited to playing catch from 90 feet at Wednesday's workout while most other Twins relievers threw bullpen or live sessions.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Optioned to Triple-A

The Twins optioned Winder to Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday. Winder will head back to the minors as Chris Paddack (elbow) returns from the injured list to take over as Minnesota's multi-inning specialist out of the bullpen. Winder put up a 4.15 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 34.2 innings with the Twins.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Earns three-inning save

Winder tossed three perfect frames and earned a save over Cleveland on Monday. He struck out one batter. Winder needed just 24 pitches to cruise through his three scoreless innings Monday. Over his last two appearances, he's fired six shutout frames, lowering his season ERA to 4.26 through 25.1 innings. It was Winder's first save of the year, and he should continue being used in a multi-inning relief role.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Back with big club

The Twins recalled Winder from Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday. He'll be joining the Minnesota bullpen as a replacement for Oliver Ortega, who was optioned to St. Paul after giving up three earned runs to take the loss in relief Tuesday against the Mariners. Winder has previously made four appearances out of the big-league bullpen this season, giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks over 5.2 innings.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Twins optioned Winder to Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Winder will cede his spot in the Minnesota bullpen to Cole Sands (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. After getting a call-up from St. Paul on June 25, Winder didn't see any work in relief during his latest stint with the big club.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Recalled from Triple-A

Winder was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Winder gave up a run in four innings while making two appearances at St. Paul since he was sent to the minors. He'll work again in a long-relief role for the Twins.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Optioned to Triple-A

Winder was optioned Saturday to Triple-A St. Paul. Winder gave up a run over two innings in Friday's loss to Detroit. He'll likely return at some point this summer to work in a long-relief role. He was seen as a potential starter last year, but he hasn't started at game at Triple-A (11 appearances) this season.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Optioned to Triple-A

Winder was optioned Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday. He gave up two runs and three hits with one walk and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning in his only appearance this season with the Twins after he was activated from the injured list April 27. Winder looked set to begin the season as Minnesota's long reliever but came down with a right shoulder injury during spring training. He didn't pitch well during his first outing in the majors, but this move more likely reflects the Twins wanting to rotate fresh pitchers into the bullpen. He'll likely be called back up to a long relief role again soon.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Shifts rehab to Triple-A

Winder (shoulder) made the fourth appearance of his rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A St. Paul, covering 1.1 innings while allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one. Winder, who has been on the 15-day injured list all season with a sore right shoulder, made his first three appearances at Single-A Fort Myers before jumping to Triple-A. The right-hander will presumably stick with St. Paul through at least the weekend before the Twins determine whether he's fit to return from the IL. Thus far during his rehab assignment, Winder has worked out of the bullpen each time out while working between one and two frames, so the Twins appear to be preparing for him to fill a multi-inning relief role. The 26-year-old previously made 11 of his 15 appearances with the big club in 2022 as a starter, but the Twins' rotation depth appears to be in a much better spot this season.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Beginning rehab assignment

Winder (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Fort Myers on Friday, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports. Winder began spring training with soreness in his right shoulder, but was able to throw 2.2 innings toward the end of camp. It's unclear how many rehab outings the 26-year-old righty will play in the minors before rejoining the Twins, but his time on the 15-day IL seems to be coming to an end relatively soon.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Throws in camp game

Winder (shoulder) threw 43 pitches over 2.2 innings Tuesday in Twins camp, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Twins president Derek Falvey told reporters Wednesday that Winder got up to 94 mph with his fastball but then added the 26-year-old right-hander will not be stretched out into a full starter's workload in order to protect his ailing shoulder. Consequently, it sounds like Winder is going to be deployed as a long reliever whenever he's deemed fit for live competition.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Not ready for regular season

Winder (shoulder) is not expected to be ready for the start of the season, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Winder is working his way back from right shoulder soreness this spring. He's thrown batting practice, so he may not be far from being ready. However, he may begin the season at Triple-A.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Throws live batting practice

Winder (shoulder) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. It's the first time he's faced hitters this spring as he works his way back from some right shoulder soreness. Winder doesn't have enough time to get stretched back out to start before Opening Day, but that could actually work to his benefit with the Twins looking to carry a long reliever.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Throws bullpen session

Winder (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, the Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He's set to throw another this weekend. Winder could face live hitters next week if all goes well, but the right-hander is behind schedule in Twins camp due to right shoulder soreness. With manager Rocco Baldelli saying he wants to keep a long reliever on the staff, Winder could still make the major-league roster in a bullpen role if he can get back to full strength before Opening Day.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Tosses side session

Winder (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Winder looks to have taken the next step forward in his spring throwing progress after he had previously been limited to playing catch off flat ground, but he still finds himself behind the Twins' other healthy pitchers in camp while he works his way back from right shoulder soreness. The injury apparently surfaced while Winder was working out in December, and though the shoulder issue isn't yet being viewed as anything that jeopardizes his availability for Opening Day, it could hinder his chances of breaking camp as a member of the rotation.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Will be built up as starter

Winder will be developed as a starter during spring training, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Winder was able to make 11 starts and 15 total appearances for the Twins in 2022, and while there were some flashes in his time with Minnesota, he ultimately finished with a 4.70 ERA over 67 innings of work. The right-hander will have a chance to win the fifth starting spot, but there's just as much risk in his profile -- if not more -- than there is reward.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Short start in loss

Winder (4-6) allowed four runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out two over 2.1 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the White Sox. Winder wasn't at his best in his last outing of the year. The White Sox did all their damage against him in the third inning, though it could have been worse had Aaron Sanchez not gotten a double play to end the threat in that frame. The rookie right-hander finished the campaign with a 4.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 47:18 K:BB across 67 innings spanning 15 appearances (11 starts) at the major-league level. He failed to complete five innings in four of his five outings after a recall to the big leagues in September.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Quality start in loss

Winder (4-5) allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Royals. Winder served up a pair of solo home runs but still managed to turn in a quality start. In three starts since being recalled by the Twins, Winder has maintained a 5.53 ERA with a 10:3 K:BB across 14.2 innings. Overall, he has a 4.20 ERA in 50 frames on the campaign while serving as a swingman with the Twins.

  • Twins' Josh Winder: Tagged for four runs

Winder allowed four runs on six hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out two over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Winder gave up an Oscar Gonzalez RBI double in the first inning, then yielded a three-run home run to Amed Rosario in the fifth. It looked like Winder would take the loss, but Minnesota rallied to tie the game in the eighth, and it turned into a 15-inning marathon before it was over. Winder hasn't completed five innings in either of his two starts since returning from Triple-A St. Paul. He has a 4.17 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB through 54 innings across 12 appearances (eight starts) in his rookie campaign. He's tentatively projected for a road start in Kansas City next week.
