The 27-year-old held a small edge in playing time over Jacob Stalling behind the plate for Miami last season, and Stallings has since been let go. Nick Fortes ended up playing in 108 games and had a .204/.263/.299 slash line, which is a sharp drop from the .696 OPS he posted in 2022. He still provided a strong presence behind the plate, which should give him a strong chance at sticking with the big club for 2024. Fortes was never a major offensive threat during his minor-league career, so he seems unlikely to break out and become a solid option for fantasy managers. Christian Bethancourt was acquired in December and is a likely bet to split catching work.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Spring struggles continue

Fortes went 0-for-3 with an RBI in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. The 27-year-old catcher hasn't made much impact at the plate this spring, batting .118 (2-for-17) with zero extra-base hits, although he does have a 4:2 BB:K. Fortes is expected to split reps behind the plate with Christian Bethancourt this season, but neither is likely to be an appealing fantasy option.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Working on swing adjustments

Fortes worked on changes to his stance and swing this offseason, and Marlins manager Skip Schumaker is expecting more offense from him this season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. It would be hard for Fortes' offense to get worse in 2024 after he stumbled to a .562 OPS through 323 plate appearances last year, a significant decline from the .696 OPS he posted in 2022. The Marlins like his work with the pitching staff, however, and offseason addition Christian Bethancourt has a career .622 OPS in the majors, so the starting job behind the plate likely still belongs to Fortes.

Fortes owns a .532 OPS on the season while Stallings' sits at .561, so neither player has made much of a push to carve out a larger role.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Connects on fourth home run

Fortes went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 8-1 loss to Seattle. Fortes continues to operate as Miami's top catcher, but he's appeared in just 45 of the team's first 67 games. His offensive production has been sporadic, and he had just three hits over his first seven June games before hitting his fourth homer of the season Monday. Overall, he's slashing .231/.280/.328 with 13 RBI and 16 runs scored, but his effort on defense will presumably keep him locked into semi-regular starts.
