Player Outlook
Wade Meckler has slashed an incredible .370/.465/.517 over 463 plate appearances in pro ball since the Giants plucked him with an eighth-round pick in the 2022 Draft. He began the 2023 campaign at High-A Eugene but reached the majors in August, ultimately managing just a .578 OPS with a 39.1 percent strikeout rate during his brief time with the Giants. That swing-and-miss was atypical of Meckler, who has a 16 percent strikeout rate and 14.9 percent walk rate in the minors. The hit tool will need to carry him, as Meckler has shown very little power dating back to his college days at Oregon State. His versatility and speed are assets along with his potential to hit for average, though, giving the 23-year-old some potential usefulness in a utility role.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Opens season on shelf

Triple-A Sacramento placed Meckler on its 7-day injured list March 29 with an unspecified injury. Before he was optioned to Triple-A on March 13 after failing to win a spot on the Giants' Opening Day roster, Meckler wasn't known to be dealing with an injury. The 23-year-old is without a clear timeline to resume playing for Sacramento.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Sent down to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Meckler to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports. Meckler finds himself out of the mix for an Opening Day roster spot even after going 11-for-26 with nine RBI and three stolen bases over 13 Cactus League games. He'll play all three outfield spots at Sacramento and will wait for an opportunity with the big club to arise.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Getting long look in spring

Meckler has gone 4-for-16 with a triple, one RBI, a stolen base, a walk and a run scored over his first nine Cactus League games. The Giants' outfield is more or less set, but Meckler is at least getting a chance to play regularly in spring. He jumped from High-A to Triple-A last season thanks to impressive hitting skills, slashing .368/.453/.506 over 83 games across three levels of the minors. It was a contact-based approach -- he had six home runs and 17 doubles while adding 13 stolen bases. Meckler's good eye at the plate will work in his favor, but he'll likely need to spend most of this season at Triple-A Sacramento unless injuries create an opportunity for him to play in the majors.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Sent down to minors

Meckler was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. Meckler kept his roster spot over Luis Matos after Mike Yastrzemski returned from the injured list last week, but the Giants are swapping out the two players now. The 23-year-old posted a .578 OPS during his first 20 games in the big leagues.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: On bench against lefty

Meckler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Meckler will join fellow left-handed hitters Joc Pederson and LaMonte Wade on the bench while Atlanta brings a southpaw (Jared Shuster) to the hill for the second straight game. Austin Slater will replace Meckler in center field and will bat leadoff.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Sitting versus lefty

Meckler isn't in San Francisco's lineup Saturday against Atlanta, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Max Fried will toe the slab to begin Saturday's contest, so the lefty-hitting Meckler will take a seat. Austin Slater will take over in center field and bat in the leadoff spot while Meckler sits.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Not starting against lefty

Meckler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus Atlanta. Meckler started all five games in center field since being promoted by the Giants on Monday, but all five of those contests came against right-handed pitchers. Lefty Max Fried is pitching Sunday for Atlanta, so Austin Slater will take over in center and bat leadoff.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Batting second again Tuesday

Meckler willstart in center field and bat second Tuesday against the Rays. Meckler went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in his major-league debut Monday versus Tampa Bay, but the Giants clearly believe he can be an impactful offensive presence at baseball's highest level just 14 months after selecting him in the eighth round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft. Prior to his sudden call-up, the 23-year-old had posted a stellar .379/.463/.522 batting line in 69 games this summer between High-A Eugene, Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Quick rise to majors

The Giants selected Meckler's contract from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. An eighth-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Oregon State University, Meckler has soared through the Giants' minor-league system this summer while delivering an overall .379/.463/.522 batting line with five homers and six steals in 69 games between High-A, Double-A and Triple-A. The 23-year-old doesn't offer a ton of immediate counting-stats upside, but he can cover all three outfield spots and should get a real opportunity down the stretch as San Francisco aims to claim a spot in the NL Wild Card mix. Giants outfielders have posted a combined .225/.307/.368 slash line so far this year.

  • Giants' Wade Meckler: Promoted to Triple-A

Meckler was promoted from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Meckler, an eighth-round pick in 2022, has been a revelation this year. He dominated in the lower levels, which didn't mean much given that he was old for those levels and had a .531 BABIP at Single-A in 2022 and a .493 BABIP at High-A this season. However, his .336/.431/.450 slash line with a 14.4 percent walk rate and 16.7 percent strikeout rate in 39 games as a 23-year-old at Double-A suggests he could make it as a regular and perhaps even as a leadoff hitter someday at the highest level. Meckler doesn't have above-average power or speed, so it will have to be his hit tool that drives his fantasy and real-life value.
