  Sheehan (forearm) has been shut down from throwing by the Dodgers, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Sheehan has been trying to work his way back from a forearm injury that he suffered in mid-March, but manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that the right-hander has been shut down for the time being. Sheehan's arm hasn't been "responding the way they've wanted it to," and it now appears unlikely that he'll have a shot at returning when eligible May 18.

While he might not be ready for the Dodgers' March 20-21 series in South Korea versus the Padres, there's a good chance he wasn't going to pitch in either of those two games, anyway. Clayton Kershaw drew the start for Los Angeles but was held to a reduced workload, tossing just 56 pitches over four scoreless frames. Sheehan took over to start the fifth inning and built upon the legendary lefty's strong outing, tossing three scoreless frames of his own. Sheehan had his swing-and-miss stuff working, racking up 15 whiffs on just 39 pitches and punching out five batters. It's not clear how the Dodgers plan to deploy him moving forward, but a piggyback role in the postseason is a possibility given Kershaw's recent shoulder troubles and the team's overall lack of rotation options.

Sheehan has a 6.75 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 22:16 K:BB through 29.1 innings overall. He's tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Reds next weekend, but he could be at risk of losing his place in the rotation if the Dodgers pursue starting pitchers at the trade deadline.

  Sheehan was arguably the biggest riser among pitching prospects prior to his promotion, putting together a 1.86 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 14.9 K/9 and Spencer Strider-like 20 percent swinging-strike rate at Double-A Tulsa. In fact, the characteristics of his fastball are said to be Strider-like with its vertical approach angle and "rising" action. The fact he got only four swinging strikes in his major-league debut Friday does give me some pause, but then again, he no-hit a pretty good team over six innings. I'd call that reason for excitement, and though there are workload concerns and even a possibility he'll return to the minors once Julio Urias is activated from the IL, Sheehan is a worthy upside play at a position where everyone has a need.
