Gavin Sheets managing to accrue a career-high 501 plate appearances in 2024 spoke much more to the futility of the White Sox than anything the player did. Among 130 players to reach 500 plate appearances, Sheets ranked 120th with his .357 slugging percentage, which is especially lackluster considering he was in the lineup mostly for his theoretical power. The 28-year-old hits a lot of fly balls and has an above-average career strikeout rate at 20.8 percent, but his hard-hit rate (36 percent), average exit velocity (88.4 mph) and barrel rate (6.3 percent) are all below league average. The White Sox non-tendered Sheets over the offseason, and it's difficult to see a 29-year-old with such an uninspiring offensive resume and no defensive value getting another crack at regular playing time in 2025.

    The Padres selected Sheets' contract from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Sheets has done a fantastic job proving he belongs on the Padres' Opening Day roster since signing an NRI deal with the club in February, slashing .311/.367/.756 with six homers and 12 RBI over 19 games. He's now officially been rewarded with a spot on the 40-man roster and has a good chance to open the season as the Friars' go-to DH against right-handed starters. Joe Musgrove (elbow) was placed on the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Gavin Sheets: Making big push for roster spot

    Sheets went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and three total RBI in Tuesday's Cactus League win over the White Sox. Sheets' first home run was a 417-foot solo shot to center field in the fifth inning. He then came up with the score tied in the ninth and blasted a walk-off two-run homer to right-center field. Sheets has been sizzling of late, going deep in four straight games with five long balls during that span. The hot spring stretch has significantly increased his likelihood of making the Opening Day roster, though several of the players he's competing with for one of the Padres' bench spots -- including Eguy Rosario, Tirso Ornelas and Brandon Lockridge -- have also played well this spring.
