  • White Sox's Gavin Sheets: Swats homer No. 10

Sheets went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Twins. He took Pablo Lopez deep in the first inning, giving the White Sox an early 5-0 lead that they barely managed to avoid squandering. Sheets snapped an 18-game homer drought with the blast, a stretch dating back to Aug. 18 in which he slashed a meager .156/.191/.222. The 27-year-old has taken over as the regular right fielder for Chicago against right-handed pitching, and while hits have been hard to come by lately, Sheets does have eight RBI in his last six contests. On the season, he has a weak .627 OPS with 10 homers and 40 RBI in 299 plate appearances.

The long ball was Sheets' first since June 16, a span of 33 games. The veteran has seen his playing time decline as his bat has been cold. Since June 20, he's slashing a meager .178/.241/.247 with one homer, seven RBI, three runs and a 5:17 BB:K over 32 contests.

  • White Sox's Gavin Sheets: Losing playing time to Colas

Sheets is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. On the bench for the fourth time in six games, Sheets appears to have moved into a bench role in the wake of the White Sox bringing aboard another lefty-hitting corner outfielder in Oscar Colas from Triple-A Charlotte. Colas has gotten off to a slow start at the plate since being recalled, but he'll likely get some time following the All-Star break to try and right the ship since Sheets wasn't provided ample production in a strong-side platoon role. Since turning in back-to-back two-hit games in the middle of June, Sheets has gone 5-for-33 at the dish over his last 14 contests.

This was Sheets' first multi-hit effort in June -- he had gone just 2-for-22 (.091) over his previous nine contests. The 27-year-old's slump has him down to a .229/.307/.410 slash line with eight homers, 23 RBI, 16 runs scored and two doubles through 52 games. Sheets has seen a majority of the time in right field lately, but Eloy Jimenez should return to that spot when he's ready to play the field, while Clint Frazier could also be a competitor for playing time.

  • White Sox's Gavin Sheets: On bench against lefty

Sheets is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. As is typically the case, the lefty-hitting Sheets will take a seat against a southpaw (Eduardo Rodriguez), but Sheets could soon see his opportunities against right-handed pitching come to an abrupt end. The White Sox reinstated Eloy Jimenez (appendectomy) from the 10-day injured list Sunday, and he looks poised to reclaim a regular role in right field moving forward with Jake Burger likely having established himself as an everyday player at designated hitter at this point. Burger could pick up reps at second base while Elvis Andrus (oblique) is sidelined, but until that happens, Sheets looks like he could be blocked from seeing steady playing time versus righties.

The 27-year-old has been struggling and playing sparingly of late, going 2-for-11 without an extra-base hit over the previous stretch. Part of that was due to a recent wrist injury, but Sheets has also been limited to a platoon role this season, seeing just four at-bats against southpaws.
