The Orioles designated Maton for assignment Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The 27-year-old was acquired from Detroit in February but wasn't going to be included on Baltimore's Opening Day roster, so the club removed him from the 40-man roster. Maton played in 93 games for the Tigers last season and had a .593 OPS with eight home runs and 32 RBI.... See More ... See Less

Orioles' Nick Maton: Sent to Baltimore
The Orioles acquired Maton from the Tigers on Wednesday in exchange for cash. Maton was DFA'd by the Tigers on Monday in order to clear space for Kolton Ingram. Maton showed promise during his first two seasons with the Phillies, but he managed just a .593 OPS last year in 293 plate appearances with Detroit. He will almost certainly head to Triple-A Norfolk to begin 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Recovering from knee surgery
Maton recently required arthroscopic surgery to address discomfort in his left knee, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. It was a fairly minor procedure and the current expectation is that Maton will be fully recovered by the start of spring training in February. The 26-year-old batted just .173/.288/.305 across 293 major-league plate appearances with the Tigers in 2023, but he drew 41 starts at third base, 19 starts at second base and even one start at shortstop.... Tigers' Nick Maton: Demoted to minors
Maton was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Maton is the roster casualty with the Tigers bringing up outfield prospect Parker Meadows from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Across 293 plate appearances at the major-league level this season, Maton has turned in a .173/.288/.305 batting line.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Provides offense Monday
Maton went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Monday's 9-3 loss to the Twins. Maton provided the offense, hitting his eighth home run of the season during garbage time in the ninth inning. The 26-year-old has mostly struggled in his first year with the Tigers, as this was his first long ball since July 14 and he's batting just .177 for the season. Maton should continue to work in rotation with the likes of Andy Ibanez, Zach McKinstry and Zack Short in the infield, with none of the options providing that much offensively.... See More ... Tigers' Nick Maton: Sits versus righty
Maton is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. After being called up from Triple-A Toledo coming out of the All-Star break, the lefty-hitting Maton had started in five of the Tigers' first six matchups with right-handed starting pitchers. He's gone just 2-for-14 at the dish since rejoining the big club, however, and Maton may no longer be guaranteed a strong-side platoon role in the infield. He'll take a seat against Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove on Sunday while Andy Ibanez gets the nod at the keystone.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Not starting Saturday
Maton isn't in the Tigers' lineup Saturday against the Mariners. Maton was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Friday and went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI in his first game back in the majors. He'll catch a breather Saturday while Andy Ibanez starts at second base and bats eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Recalled, starting Friday
The Tigers recalled Maton from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, and he will start at second base and bat seventh in the series opener against the Mariners. Maton responded well to his recent demotion, slashing .289/.417/.526 with two homers and seven walks compared to 10 strikeouts across 11 games with Toledo to earn another opportunity with the big-league club. He is slashing just .163/.289/.287 across 239 plate appearances with the Tigers this season and has a long way to go before he can be considered viable in shallower fantasy leagues.... See More ... Tigers' Nick Maton: Demoted to Triple-A
Maton was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's loss to the Twins, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Maton has started 58 games this season and was operating as Detroit's primary third baseman, but he's now been sent down after going 1-for-4 with a strikeout and a crucial throwing error in Sunday's extra-inning defeat. The 26-year-old has a .163/.289/.287 slash line with six home runs and 23 RBI this year, and he'll attempt to straighten out his swing at Triple-A. Jonathan Schoop, Zack Short and Andy Ibanez could all factor in at third base for the Tigers.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Sitting against lefty
Maton isn't starting Tuesday against the Royals. The left-handed bat of Maton will remain in the dugout against southpaw Daniel Lynch and the Royals on Tuesday. Jonathan Schoop will start at third base instead while batting sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Retreats to bench Wednesday
Maton is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals. Maton will exit the lineup to clear a spot at designated hitter for Andy Ibanez, who re-enters the starting nine after a two-game break. Ibanez appeared to supplant Maton as a regular in the Detroit starting nine last week, but Ibanez may be back on the outs for a regular role after going 1-for-31 over his past nine games. Maton, meanwhile, started in each of Detroit's last three contests and went 3-for-8 with a solo home run and three walks.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Goes deep in loss
Maton went 2-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Nationals. Maton was the only Detroit player with an extra-base hit, as he popped his fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning. This was only the second multi-hit effort of the month for Maton, who's mostly struggled this year with a .165 batting average across 41 games. He gives the Tigers some defensive versatility but can mostly be avoided in fantasy leagues at the moment.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Takes seat versus lefty
Maton is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates. Maton will take a seat while the Tigers deploy a lineup of nine right-handed hitters to counter Pirates southpaw Rich Hill. The lefty-hitting Maton could soon be in danger of seeing fewer opportunities against right-handed pitching as well; he's getting on base at a .194 clip in May and is maintaining a lowly .564 OPS over 130 plate appearances on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Serving as DH again Sunday
Maton is starting at designated hitter and batting fifth in Sunday's game against the Mariners. Andy Ibanez is continuing to see time at third base, so Maton will serve as the DH for the second straight game. He's batting just .157 with a .570 OPS, so he may continue to cede playing time to Ibanez at the hot corner, while DH starts aren't guaranteed moving forward either. Maton will need to start hitting more consistently soon to maintain a regular role with the Tigers.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Remains out of lineup
Maton isn't starting Friday against the Mariners. Maton has hit just .136 with two doubles, two RBI, a run, a walk and nine strikeouts over his last eight games, and he'll take a seat for a second consecutive contest with left-hander Marco Gonzales on the mound for Seattle. Andy Ibanez will take over at the hot corner and bat fifth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Out against lefty
Maton is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. For the second time in the series, the lefty-hitting Maton will retreat to the bench while the Cardinals bring a southpaw (Steven Matz) to the hill. Andy Ibanez will spell Maton at third base and will bat fifth.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Out versus lefty
Maton isn't starting Friday against the Cardinals. The lefty-hitting Maton will get a day off against the lefty-throwing Jordan Montgomery on Friday. Zack Short will start at third base and bat eighth while Maton sits.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Crushes three-run shot
Maton went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in Monday's win over the Brewers. Maton singled in the first inning to snap an 0-for-21 skid before ripping a three-run homer in the third. He's up to four home runs this season alongside a .154/.257/.369 slash line through 74 plate appearances. Maton picked up his first extra-base hit since April 14.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Takes seat Sunday
Maton is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. Maton will take a seat after going 0-for-20 at the dish over his last five games to drop his season average to .131. With Maton on the bench, Zach McKinstry and Jonathan Schoop will pick up starts at third base and second base, respectively.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Nick Maton: Batting leadoff Tuesday
Maton is starting at third base and batting leadoff for the Tigers in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Guardians, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Maton has been splitting time between second and third base since Tyler Nevin arrived and will settle in at the hot corner for this one. The 26-year-old is hitting just .195 but is showing some surprising pop early in the season with three home runs.... See More ... See Less
