Player Outlook
Ernie Clement spent 30 games in the majors in 2023, slashing an impressive .380/.385/.500 across 52 plate appearances, backing up 320 Triple-A plate appearances where he hit .348/.401/.544. The small sample in the majors also came with a .885 OPS as he played well when given an opportunity. Therein lies the problem however, as Clement's chances were few and far between in 2023. Things don't look much better for Clement in 2024 as the signing of Isiah Kiner-Falefa knocks him down the utility man depth chart for the Blue Jays.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Goes deep in loss

Clement went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Padres. Clement left the yard with a solo blast to left field off Joe Musgrove in the third inning for his second home run of the year. Clement came into this season with just four career home runs and is already halfway to that mark in the first month of the campaign. The 28-year-old is slashing .295/.304/.500 with five extra-base hits, four RBI, nine runs and a 0:5 BB:K in 46 plate appearances.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Swipes bag Tuesday

Clement went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Yankees. Getting the start at third base and batting seventh, Clement delivered his second straight multi-hit performance and fourth of the season. The 28-year-old utility player predictably hasn't been able to match his blistering spring now that the games count, but he's become a useful part of Toronto's mix-and-match infield, batting .289 (11-for-38) with three doubles, a homer, a steal, two RBI and eight runs while making appearances at third base (nine), shortstop (four), second base (one) and even left field (one).

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Clubs first homer of season

Clement went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's win over the Yankees. Entering the game as a pinch hitter for Cavan Biggio in the top of the seventh inning, Clement broke open a 0-0 tie by driving a Caleb Ferguson fastball over the fence in left field. It was the 28-year-old infielder's first long ball and first RBI of the season, but he's had a solid start to the campaign, going 5-for-17 (.294) with three runs scored and only one strikeout. Clement's hit tool, defensive versatility and developing power -- he slugged 11 homers with a .196 ISO in 320 plate appearances for Triple-A Buffalo last year -- could allow him to carve out a much larger role than expected on a Toronto roster that lacks full-time starters at second base and third base.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Looks good for roster spot

Clement appears to have won a spot on the Blue Jays' Opening Day roster following the trade of Santiago Espinal to the Reds on Wednesday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Clement was likely in the lead for an infield utility role anyway, but shipping out Espinal clarifies the roster picture for Toronto. The 27-year-old has been stunningly productive this spring, batting .375 (15-for-40) with three homers, two triples, two steals and only one strikeout, but his career .231/.279/.299 slash line through 364 big-league plate appearances is probably a better reflection of his fantasy appeal. It's also not clear just how much playing time Clement will get given that the Jays already have a number of players with versatile defensive portfolios, including Cavan Biggio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, but Espinal faced similar competition in 2023 and still saw 254 PAs over 93 games.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Continues raking in camp

Clement 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. The 27-year-old launched a two-run homer off Zach Eflin in the second inning before singling home another run off the Tampa right-hander in the third. Clement came into camp with a decent chance of winning the final spot on the Toronto bench due to the fact that he was out of minor-league options, but he's backed that up with a scorching spring that's seen him hit .400 (10-for-25) through nine games with a triple and two homers. Perhaps more impressively, he hasn't struck out once in 26 plate appearances. The Blue Jays have unsettled situations at both second base and third base, and if Clement carries his hot stick into the regular season, he could push his way into playing time at both spots.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Making case for bench spot

Clement has emerged as a favorite to win a utility job on the Blue Jays' bench, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. The 27-year-old infielder has a modest .578 OPS through 364 career big-league plate appearances, but he's out of minor-league options and has gone 5-for-13 (.385) with a triple and a stolen base through five Grapefruit League games. Clement's main competition appears to be Santiago Espinal and veteran non-roster invitee Eduardo Escobar, but the former can be optioned to Triple-A and the latter is flailing at the plate, going 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts this spring.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Sent down to Triple-A

Clement was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Cam Eden is coming up to absorb Clement's spot on the Blue Jays' roster. Clement boasts an .885 OPS in 52 plate appearances in the majors this season, but his opportunities have been few and far between.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Moves into utility role

Clement is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers. Though he drew the start at shortstop in Wednesday's 10-0 loss to Texas, Clement has moved back into a utility role since Bo Bichette was reinstated from the 10-day injured list last Friday. Clement is now on the bench for the third time in four games and is expected to see few opportunities moving forward now that Toronto has recently welcomed both of its regular starters on the left side of the infield (Bichette and Matt Chapman) back from the IL.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Nabs third straight start

Clement will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Nationals. He'll man shortstop for the third game in a row after going 2-for-7 at the dish between the first two contests of the series with Washington. The Blue Jays seem content to go with Clement as their primary option at shortstop until Bo Bichette (quadricep) is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Returns to majors

Clement was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. The 27-year-old utility man will provide some infield depth while Matt Chapman (finger) is on the 10-day injured list and while Bo Bichette (quadricep) is day-to-day. Clement has a career .542 OPS over parts of three big-league seasons.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Sent down to Triple-A

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Recalled from Triple-A

Clement was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Clement is 2-for-5 at the dish during his brief time in the majors this season. He'll provide depth along the infield for the Blue Jays.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Inks minors deal with Toronto

Clement signed a minor-league contract Tuesday with the Blue Jays which includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Clement struggled to attract interest all winter after batting just .184/.243/.209 over 179 major-league plate appearances last season between the Guardians and Athletics. The soon-to-be 27-year-old will function as organizational infield depth for Toronto heading into the 2023 campaign. He has also played some corner outfield.

  • Ernie Clement: Released by Oakland

Clement was released by the Athletics on Sunday. Clement was designated for assignment by Oakland last weekend, and he'll become a free agent as part of a series of roster cuts Sunday. The 26-year-old played in 70 games between the Guardians and Athletics last year and hit .184 with 19 runs and six RBI.

  • Athletics' Ernie Clement: Claimed by A's

Clement was claimed off waivers by the Athletics on Friday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The Guardians designated Clement for assignment earlier this week, but Oakland -- an organization with much less depth -- added him to the 40-man roster. Clement hit .200 with zero home runs and zero steals in 145 at-bats this season, but his defensive versatility is a selling point from a real-life perspective.

  • Guardians' Ernie Clement: Cast off 40-man roster

The Guardians designated Clement for assignment Wednesday. Clement was moved off the 40-man roster in order for the Guardians to clear up a spot for rookie outfielder Will Brennan, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Columbus. While filling a utility role for Cleveland this season, Clement had seen action in 64 games and produced a .200/.264/.221 slash line over 161 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Ernie Clement: Recalled by Cleveland

Clement was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Clement was demoted to Columbus in early August and will return to Cleveland with big-league rosters expanding to 28 players. The 26-year-old has a .492 OPS in 158 plate appearances in the bigs this season and should fill a utility role while up in the majors.

  • Guardians' Ernie Clement: Heads to minors

The Guardians optioned Clement to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. Clement will surrender his role as the Guardians' top utility infielder to Tyler Freeman, who was called up from Columbus in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old Clement had seen scarce playing time at the big-league level this season, with most of his opportunities coming against left-handed pitching. He hit just .203 with three extra-base hits -- all doubles -- in 158 plate appearances with Cleveland.

  • Guardians' Ernie Clement: Back on bench Tuesday

Clement is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins. Clement made two straight starts at third base to close out the Guardians' weekend series with the Dodgers, but he'll move back into his usual reserve role Tuesday with Jose Ramirez (thumb) ready to go after a brief absence. Along with Ramirez, designated hitter Franmil Reyes (hamstring) is back in action Tuesday, putting the Guardians lineup back at full strength. As a result, Clement is expected to see limited opportunities moving forward, with most of the starts he receives likely to come against left-handed pitching.

  • Guardians' Ernie Clement: Playing time still limited

Clement has started four of the Guardians' 11 games in June. He's started to mix into the lineup with a little more frequency, but Clement remains without a clear path to at-bats. He's gone 2-for-14 with three strikeouts and a walk through five contests in June, dropping his season slash line to .214/.275/.250 in 92 plate appearances.
