Padres' Luis Patino: Placed on injured list
The Padres placed Patino on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right elbow inflammation.
Patino made two appearances during spring training, surrendering five earned runs in just 2.1 innings of work. He'll spend at least the first two weeks of the season on the IL, and it's likely Patino is optioned to Triple-A El Paso once he's healthy.

Padres' Luis Patino: Reports to camp after visa delay
Patino has reported to Padres' camp after being delayed by visa issues, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Patino landed back in his original organization via waiver claim this offseason. It's not clear whether the Padres plan to stretch him out to start or if he's pegged for a relief role. The latter would certainly be the most expedient way to get him ready for Opening Day after the delay.

Padres' Luis Patino: Arrival at camp delayed
Patino isn't yet at Padres camp due to an issue with his visa, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Patino rejoined the Padres off waivers in December after spending the past three campaigns in the American League. It's not clear what his role with San Diego will be this season, though his experience as both a starter and middle reliever could be useful for what currently projects to be a thin rotation. The visa issue isn't likely to impact Patino's readiness for the start of the regular season.

Padres' Luis Patino: Claimed by Padres
The Padres claimed Patino off waivers from the White Sox on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
It's a return to his original organization for Patino, who was traded from the Padres to the Rays prior to the 2021 season in the Blake Snell deal. Patino has managed just a 5.02 ERA and 124:70 K:BB in 136.1 major-league innings, but he's still only 24 and San Diego probably could use the pitching depth.

Patino had a lot of prospect buzz a couple of years ago, but he owns a career 5.02 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 124:70 K:BB in 136.1 major-league innings. The 24-year-old right-hander might draw some interest on waivers given his age and raw talent.

White Sox's Luis Patino: Gets first start Wednesday
Patino is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Prior to being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Sept. 1, Patino had made five starts for the White Sox's top minor-league affiliate, but he never covered more than four innings in any of those outings. He's since worked exclusively in relief following his call-up, topping out at four innings and 66 pitches over five appearances. Given his recent workloads, Patino might not be stretched out enough to reach the five innings he would need to qualify for a win even if he's economical with his pitch count. The White Sox have another multi-inning reliever in Deivi Garcia available on six days' rest, and he may be a better bet than Patino to qualify for a win if Chicago requires some length out of the bullpen.

White Sox's Luis Patino: Recalled from Charlotte
The White Sox recalled Patino from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
Patino will serve as the White Sox's additional pitcher as rosters expand to 28 players. The 23-year-old righty has struggled mightily this season with a 6.49 ERA and 1.71 WHIP across 59.2 innings in Triple-A, and he surrendered four runs in four frames with the Rays earlier this year.

White Sox's Luis Patino: Dealt to Chicago
Patino was traded from the Rays to the White Sox on Tuesday in exchange for cash, James Fegan of the Chicago Sun Times reports.
Patino was once a highly-prized pitching prospect, but he didn't emerge as an effective starter or reliever at the highest level. The 23-year-old righty has a career 5.23 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 111 strikeouts in 118.2 MLB innings. Patino has a 6.75 ERA this season at Triple-A while working mostly as a reliever, but since few teams have more rotation spots up for grabs in the short term and long term than the White Sox, he could continue his development as a starter in his new organization. The fact that the Rays were willing to give up Patino for cash doesn't inspire much confidence in his outlook moving forward, however. He'll report to Triple-A Charlotte to begin his tenure in the White Sox organization, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

Rays' Luis Patino: Moves up from Triple-A
The Rays recalled Patino from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Patino was moved to the bullpen a month ago with Durham and has struggled overall in the role with a 10.24 ERA, though much of that damage came in a May 12 appearance in which he surrendered seven earned runs. He had allowed just one run over his last five outings to earn the call back to the big leagues as a replacement in the bullpen for Calvin Faucher (elbow), who was moved to the 15-day injured list.

Rays' Luis Patino: Moving to relief at Triple-A
Patino has been moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Durham, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Patino threw a scoreless inning Saturday for Durham in his first relief appearance of the season following a 6.66 ERA in six starts. While it doesn't necessarily look like a permanent move, if Patino helps the Rays in 2023 it seems like it will be as a reliever. "The best version that we saw of Luis was probably in (2021), I think when he was coming out of the bullpen for us," manager Kevin Cash said. "He was very, very powerful."

Rays' Luis Patino: Struggling in recent starts
Patino was knocked around for seven runs in 2.2 innings in his final spring start Friday against the Mets, raising his Grapefruit League ERA to 11.17.
Patino is fighting with Yonny Chirinos and Josh Fleming for the Rays' fifth starter job, and he hasn't made a very strong case. In addition to his inflated ERA, he also owns a poor 1.86 WHIP and has walked seven batters and hit three more in 9.2 innings. Chrinos hasn't pitched well either, recording an 8.59 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 7.1 frames, while Fleming's 4.91 ERA in 14.2 innings is better but still unimpressive. The Rays could wind up getting creative every fifth day until Tyler Glasnow (oblique) returns, something the organization has plenty of experience doing.

Rays' Luis Patino: Optioned to Triple-A
Patino was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Patino was in the mix for the Rays' fifth starter spot, but his 11.17 ERA and 1.86 WHIP this spring will cause him to open the year in the minors. Patino has struggled to a 5.10 ERA in 114.2 career major-league innings, including an awful 8.10 ERA in six starts last season, but he's still just 23 years old. A strong month in the minors could easily see him return to the majors for the bulk of the year, but for now, it will be Yonny Chirinos or Josh Fleming who opens the year as the Rays' fifth starter.

Patino has thrown 5.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and three walks in three appearances in the Grapefruit League.
Patino is in consideration for a rotation spot with Tyler Glasnow (oblique) sidelined, and he's pitched well early on. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings against the Mets on Sunday, an outing highlighted by strikeouts of Francisco Alvarez, Tommy Pham and Danny Mendick. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that manager Kevin Cash voiced concern over Patino consistently falling behind in the count, though he also noted that Patino made several strong pitches to work out of trouble. Patino had been building up as a starter to begin spring training, though his fit in the rotation was unclear so long as everyone remained healthy. Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed Friday that Patino (shoulder) is being built up as a starter this spring, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Patino struggled to an 8.10 ERA in six major-league starts last season and was shut down in September with a shoulder issue, but he brought a clean bill of health into camp, and the Rays still hope that he can provide some organizational rotation depth. The 23-year-old is likely to open the season at Triple-A Durham, assuming Tampa Bay's five projected starters make it through the spring unscathed. The 22-year-old righty has had a difficult season. He opened the year in the rotation but failed to complete a single inning before suffering an oblique strain which sidelined him until mid-July. Since his return, he's bounced between the majors and minors, posting a 7.91 ERA in six MLB starts and a 4.50 ERA in nine Triple-A outings. He's now at real risk of missing the remainder of the season unless his shoulder injury turns out to be very minor.

Patino failed to record a strikeout while coughing up three home runs in the brutal loss. He served up a pair of three-run blasts, one apiece to Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton.
